  1. More proof as to why someone other than Robert Faulkens should be overseeing our sport. The numbers don’t lie, but he’ll deny that those are the actual numbers. It should only take one year for him to see that and send at least two of those teams back to their original sectional.
  2. Yes, with any kind of tradition it’s always the easy route to say “well, this is the way we’ve always done it, so…” I hear that line at work far too often. I work with Faulkens on the IHSAA baseball finals so will go straight to the source to at least hear reasons on it not making sense.
  3. When attending the IHSAA State Finals over the past few years, I've always felt bad that by the time the 220 and HWT matches come around, half of the crowd has already left Gainbridge. Those kids work just as hard as the little guys, and nobody seems to miss those matches unless they're late on closing a bar tab between sessions. I noticed when watching the Big 12 championships and again during the NCAAs on Saturday night that the most intriguing championship match was saved for last to keep the crowd engaged in the arena and your streaming/televised crowd, too. At Big 12's, it was Iowa State's David Carr against Missouri's Keegan O'Toole, and then Yianni Diakomihalis' match for his fourth NCAA title was saved for last on Saturday. How difficult would it be to adapt this thought process to the IHSAA State Finals? It'd be nice to end with the best match of the night... keeps most of everyone in the building for all 14 bouts, sells more concessions, keeps your TV audience for the duration of the broadcast, etc. I'm no businessman, but it seems like a no-brainer.
  4. It was but Khawaja also came into the state finals with a bum ankle or knee if memory serves. Upset in terms of rankings but he was not close to 100%. You could see it in the match and when his coaches walked him back to the tunnel, one under each arm.
  5. Tylin Thrine gets taken down by Reyes in the first, ridden for 1:30, escaped with 10 seconds and caught Reyes on his knees for a throw and fall. FIREWORKS in New Castle!
  6. Want to commend John Rushenberg from Bishop Chatard at 160. Lost a tight ticket round match 14-12 to Russell from Warren Central, who was called for a slam with 30 seconds left. Rushenberg appeared pretty dazed, but as a senior, wanted to finish the match and win on his terms. It seemed like WC’s fans and a few coaches thought Chatard would take the default, which was never going to be the case. If memory serves, two years ago Warren Central’s David Pierson was slammed by New Castle’s Brevan Thrine, and Pierson took the injury default to advance. He then proceeded to win in the semis and finals while taunting New Castle’s crowd, then placed at the state tournament. You win with class. You lose with class. You don’t take shortcuts. There are much bigger things in life than a ticket round victory, and Rushenberg showed he’s destined to do great things off the mat.
  7. Reyes and Graham are peaking at the right time.
  8. Schoettle over Crull 5-4. Sucker drag finish with 5 seconds left.
  9. Reyes over Wolf by 4-6 points, same for Harden against Guenin.
  10. Would the IHSAA ever consider expanding the points system from 18 to 20 or 22? That would allow teams to keep their schedules competitive as is while also inserting a couple sectional opponents they otherwise wouldn’t wrestle into their schedule.
  11. Woof. Matches being thrown left and right if that’s the case, which is ridiculous.
  12. Gard’s comment is what sparked my response because at the end of the day, to be the best you have to beat the best. I would take the comment I referenced from the wrestler to my grave and will certainly take your advice on elevating this to our AD and the IHSAA. The draw is the draw at this point, but it’d be nice to know that nobody outside the IHSAA knows the formula in advance.
  13. During semifinals at regionals, a wrestler we had just beaten for the first time in four tries came up to me and said “better win this next one because our 2 pairs up with Perry Meridian champ.” Sure enough, finished second and drew the Perry Meridian champ in our pod, a defending state champ no less. If a wrestler knows the formula beforehand, then the coaches are at fault, right? Where is the integrity in a “blind” draw if that’s the case?
  14. They were out by 5pm on Saturday last year. We were looking at brackets on the way home from regionals.
  15. We have committed to drinking until semistate brackets are revealed. The sooner the better, parents are dosing off.

  17. Broady was one of the most impressive wrestlers of the day. Dominant in the finals!
  18. Johnson and Brown is a first-round regional rematch from a year ago. Brown WBF but Johnson has taken a big step forward from last year to this year, should be a fun one.
  19. Thrine + Wolf, yes. The draw for the SS bracket will be wild. Reyes, Billerman, Ingalls, Mattingly, Davis all better than anything beyond Thrine and Wolf though.
  20. Arsenal Tech 120 is deep. Top five seeds a combined 115-25.

  22. In regard to this new seeding criteria: Mr. Faulkens, what you’ve just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.
  23. Volz from Eastern Hancock missing at 132 for NCSS, Glass from New Pal missing at 195 for NCSS. There is a laundry list of names missing across the board… but what do we tell our kids every day? Rankings. Don’t. Matter.* *we still love and appreciate the rankings, so rankers, keep up the good work.
