  1. That's what I figured. It's a ton of work I'm sure to try to figure out who is deserving a whole year in advance and it quite honestly doesn't affect the team I coach often. Just interested in the process. Thanks for re-explaining. So in conclusion, the only real effects of the imbalanced sectionals are 1) Easier team title for one sectional and 2) slightly more than your fair share of Regional qualifiers for that same sectional while slightly less for the other sectional.
  2. So it looks like there's some that are similar, though none quite as bad. And Maligned, I agree that the seeding at Sectionals makes it work most of the time, but there are certainly instances where a kid ends up on the other side of the bracket at sectionals, makes it to the final, takes 2nd, while the 1st, 3rd, and 4th placers all were on the other side so the 3rd and 4th placers never see the 2nd placer. But that seems like such a rare occurrence, it's not worth making a fuss over. Does it impact the team state scores any for some of those smaller schools that get more through to Regionals or is that all calculated for by having the Regional ratings? I didn't think it mattered much, aside from the obvious competition to win a Sectional Team Title is vastly different, but that's the same if you take some teams and put them anywhere else.
  3. Sitting in the stands waiting for our next match, some of the other coaches and I got to thinking how some Regionals pit a strong sectional vs a weaker one (our Regional--North Montgomery--being one). I decided to crunch the numbers this morning: North Montgomery Regional SSQs: Frankfort Sectional: 41 Crawfordsville Sectional: 15 (Zionsville had 9 by themselves, meaning 6 others from the whole sectional) BY comparison, here are the other Regionals in the New Castle Semi-State Pendleton Heights Regional SSQs: Elwood Sectional: 25 Arsenal Tech: 31 Richmond Regional SSQs: South Dearborn: 33 Shenandoah: 23 Perry Meridian SSQs: Shelbyville: 28 Southport: 28 So from this, 2 questions we kicked around: 1) Is this happening at other Regionals, where one sectional dominates the other? If not, question 2 probably doesn't matter. 2) Do we care? Does it matter at all or does it all even out because they are the same Regional anyways?
  4. I typically agree with you, but due to a Senior-laden line-up where they had to cut to make the line-up and in season weight training, I have some kids that are way bigger than most in their weights. We typically need every second of practice throughout the week to make weight without being gassed on Saturdays. Some of my kids have treadmills or bikes at home, others do not. It'd sure put me at peace of mind if I knew either A) We could practice today (no decision yet by district) or B- We could get 2 extra pounds for them. Now I have been on the other side of the coin and can see that that extra 2 pounds will be extremely harmful for some (my 106 weighs 103 on a heavy day and to have to wrestle some 110 guys will be a tall task).
  5. I’m not saying that I agree with the rule but it is textbook stalling to hang on a leg and do nothing to improve. theres a lot of college matches that do this, yes, and it never gets called but it is within the right of an official to hit stalling when a wrestler is actively avoiding scoring. Personal opinion is that you earn the right to stall by building a big lead. I do have an issue with officials calling stalling in quick succession like that as well. I was just pointing out that if there’s no attempt to improve it could be called stalling. Again, from what you’ve described, if he’s defending and blocking improvement, that is NOT stalling, and I believe even forcing a scramble or crackdown situation and milking time is not stalling, but shooting under locking hands and hanging out with no attempt to improve is stalling, technically speaking.
  6. Diving in on a leg with no intent to score is indeed stalling and should be called as such. However, if the kid has a shin whizzer and there is no chance of improvement, should probably be a quick Stalemate and go again. If the kid dove under again after a stalemate and didn’t try to finish, then maybe hit a stall.
  7. You could organize it by having one person buy all the tickets and distributing from there. You could also just have many families get together and purchase at the same time, ensuring seating is near each other. Just a couple ideas we've been kicking around this afternoon for the same reason.
  8. Just wanted to thank this community on behalf of the Rich family. The generosity you all have shown between the go-fund-me and our event last night is overwhelming. A special shout out to the Carmel Wrestling family for coming out in full force last night and supporting the sport and Harrison. Your kindness does not go unnoticed. Thank you all again!

  15. Thank you for posting! Harrison is about the hardest working kid you could meet. Works his butt off, great teammate, wonderful kid. His family is is very supportive of all wrestling and the community and would greatly appreciate the support. we’d love for you all to come to the HSE-Carmel dual if possible and show your support. Thanks again!
  16. Coach Leonard has done a great job there! Congrats to him! Excited to get to compete with the Blackhawks at sectionals!
  17. Fun topic: Just purely based off of current state rankings to keep my own biases out of it as a coach, New Castle would be this way: 106- Smith-Southport 113- Dickey- Cathedral 120- Leavell- Warren Central 126- Wolf- East Central 132- Seltzer- Cathedral 138- Lowery- Roncalli 145- Koontz- PM 152- Rinehart- Zionsville 160- Jones- Warren Central 170- Cast- HSE 182- Hansen- Roncalli 195- Woodall- Southmont 220- Long- Noblesville 285- Burgett- HSE Supposedly a down year in the semi-state, but a lot of studs right there. Still not sure we could beat Evansville or East Chicago this season. Team race at New Castle will be interesting too. Just based off of this, Cathedral, Warren Central, Roncalli, and HSE all have 2 top ranked guys. I'm Sure Carmel, Westfield, Zionsville and East Central will all be right in the mix too. Gonna depend a lot on those 3rd and 4th place finishers and how many you can get to the ticket round. If I had to guess, Cathedral is likely the favorite right now, but it'll be a fun day in about a month! Probably going to come down to who can sneak their 182 and 220 pounders through as those appear to be the "weakest" weights by state rankings at this point, but at least a few top 195 pounders are switching to 182 if you look at recent results, so I suspect you'll have a few different kids on the New Castle podium than the rankings currently reflect.
