While I tend to agree with you, your scenario does not fit all wrestlers.
Problems arise when a 14, 15, 16, or 17 year old hits a growth spurt and is now cutting down from 185/190/195 to get to 170.
I would rather coach a kid who eats healthy and wrestles near his natural weight and maintains a love of the sport (and good attitude/grades/etc.) -- yet loses a match or two because of being undersized -- than a kid who skips meals, hates practice, always tired and grouchy, but wins every match.
well said.....

This is probably one of the biggest roadblocks a kid runs in to every year. Do I cut hard to get down to that next weight class and be considered a bigger wrestler for that weight and hopefully do better because I'm bigger and stronger? Without saying it, we all know that you really need to be a good wrestler first or that extra strength and size won't get you the wins you're after. Both of my kids did the same as most others every year and were always cutting weight. Is it worth it? For the first time in all the seasons they've wrestled my youngest sons final high school season is without any weight cutting. I have to say I see a huge difference in his attitude and general health (not surprisingly). He is always in a good mood, always ready to go and never hungry or thirsty. He eats every meal, snacks whenever he wants and pounds down the water and still weighs in 3-4 pounds under weight. At the start of the season his intent was to wrestle 132, then it changed to 138 which he made with very little effort, and then because of needs in our lineup, bumped up to 145. He might not be the biggest 145er but still manages to hang in there. How much of that is from feeling good and being well nourished and hydrated? I think a lot. Had he dropped to 132, would he have done well just because of the size difference? Or if he had stayed at 138 and not really diet but just watch it the day of weigh ins? I guess we'll never know but I do have a different viewpoint now of cutting weight and the pro's and con's of doing so. I'm sure every kid is different and easier weight classes sometimes draw you in, but in the end if you're not healthy I don't see how you can perform as well.

i get that. I know a guy you may know named Joe Stewart who had or has one of the best head locks I've ever seen. Often times in high school and in college he hit that headlock and pinned his opponent he was losing at the time. He still got the win. I was trying to point out what Coach Booker taught me in1986. No excuses. If I'm up 13 and get pinned I obviously have flaws I need to work on. Just my 2 cents no malice here.
right on the mark......

Saw this movie a few weeks ago in Elkhart.
A very dark and painful movie. People need to remember this is based on a true story and it has a very depressing ending.
It is extremely well-acted and I can understand why it may get several Oscar nominations. It is a very well-done movie, as far as movies go.
But if anybody thinks this is a "feel-good" movie about wrestling, you will be sorely disappointed.
I think sometimes we want to see attention given to our sport, so much, that we just see "wrestling" in the description and ignore the context.
John DuPont did a lot for USA Wrestling, but he was also insane. That's just the fact. And this movie has a true -- and very tragic -- ending.
Parents might actually want to think twice about taking young wrestlers to see this. Don't go if you aren't prepared for what you already know is going to happen.
very well put and exactly what i thought going in and coming out......you go in pumped up ready for some action and leave kind of disappointed and feeling like this was not a movie that will bring any good attention to the sport......quite a story though.....it kind of just drags on and then the end totally catches you off guard, unless you knew the whole story to begin with.....steve carrell did quite a job in his acting on this one.....

I believe we could have up to 3 teams with 2 champions, I think 3 from one team would be very unlikely. Penn, EMD, and Lowell are my guesses to get 2 each. Penn would be the least likely but I wouldn't be shocked if they pulled it off.
so when is the last time someone had 3 champs?.......
-
wouldn't count out Mammolenti at Penn.......
-
did you have an assistant helping you with play by play or something?......don't know how you could watch and type all at the same time.......lol.......awesome job!

not a huge deal but elkhart memorial and plymouth go at it thursday night (at plymouth) in what should determine the dual portion of the conference championship.......should be a close match.....
CANCELLED!!!!!! I hate snow days........
-
the last couple of years this has happened and the head coach for our team sat in the stands and watched while non coaches took over when the moratorium started......
-
so why would there even be an issue then if it's supposedly ok to just move your moratorium week after the disney duals?......or i am reading that wrong?.......
-
I don't think chaos would occur if the dead week would occur a week later for those teams that would like to participate in this event. Most states don't have this particular rule but I do know some states observe a moratorium that teams declare their dead week date. For there to be chaos you have to convince me that there is a group that is actually monitoring rules such as this and fact of the matter is this is a honor rule so a week later will not create chaos. A opportunity to be flexible with this rule and let these athletes take advantage of the exposure that this tournament provides should be in the best interest of all IHSAA and the student athletes . IMO
holy moly i hope you're not insinuating that indiana coaches should "bend" the rule?........(there i go with them quotation marks again!......sorry karl.....lol).......

Urban did exactly what I thought he would do which is take OSU to the top......no doubt he is one hell of a coach......I think Harbaugh will do the same......couldn't be more excited in terms of getting him at Michigan!

Your football team isn't as good as the state east of us either.....Go Bucks!!
lol.......good one......but, coach harbough shall bring us back to the top!!!!!.....GO BLUE!!!!!!!!

That is why I said using the quotation marks gives the impression you are being ironic. If irony is not the impression you want to express then I might suggest that you don't use the quotation marks because it distorts what you are trying to say. This is the second time you have given that impression. My feelings and nerves have nothing to do with this issue, bringing emotions into the issue is just a deflection, probably because you are uncomfortable with me questioning what you type on here.
I do think that just because many schools already attend is not a very logical reason for giving an exception. The IHSAA sets up the summer participation rules to apply to all sports. If they start making exceptions on a sport by sport basis, it would be chaos. Not a chance they drop down that rabbit hole.
i think i see the problem here......i went to school in that state just north of here and probably didn't get as good of english studies as you did and therefore am just not as smart as you so sometimes i use improper punctuation and phrases........lol.......heck i can't even do capitol letters to start a sentence and stop at one period?......i will try to refrain from the use of quotation marks......and i am not uncomfortable with you questioning me.......i have thick skin.......
-
Your use of quotation marks around rules gives the impression that you are being ironic, that you don't feel this particular rule should apply to wrestling. By extension, I would assume you would have no issue with this rule being broken. That is a shame.
man i must have really hit a nerve with you on the "bending" the rule thing a few weeks ago that you tried to make sound like i feel it's ok to do (when in fact i never said that).....sorry if i hurt your feelings bud......that is such a shame......but to clarify once again your putting words in my mouth, no i do not feel this should apply to wrestling in this case, but if that's the rule then no it should not be broken......the ihsaa should take a look at this and give an exception since it is attended by quite a few indiana schools, but i agree with Y2........good luck getting something done about it......
-
indiana sure seems to have a lot of "rules" that tend to hold us back versus help us get to the next level......

just curious as to how many backpoints did he get with those 2 nasty headlocks that had Pruitt on his back? plz correct me if I am wrong but I say those 2 nasty headlocks got him 0 NF and if you ask me the score most certainly showed how the match went....it should have been 21-6 but the ref took away 2 NF points for Pruitt also the match was millimeters from being over by fall at the buzzer in the 2nd period.....just saying if you wanna make a loss by your kid seem more relevant don't downplay another kid to do so....
there isn't any relevance to a loss......a loss is a loss......and i wasn't taking anything away from pruitt.....he is very deserving of his ranking and proved that the last couple of days.....but give credit where credit is due.....levitz in my opinion is under rated......if you don't think so, well you're entitled to your opinion even if you're wrong.....lol
-
bottom line is the wrestler was hanging on to the opposing wrestlers ankle while that wrestler jumped/ran/hopped/kicked to get out on all three occasions and never got away.....as i recall, it was once during the match and twice during the ot...........so there has to be a rule book answer....what is it?
-
if that is the case then the ref made the correct call......

Triana over Cavanaugh 7-6
Hildebrandt over Cody Crary 3-0
Mejia techs Tolin (I believe Tolin won the first match up at Chesterton Duals)
Hunting loses to Wells, Wells losses to Johnson, Johnson loses to Greathouse
Molloy pins Truver
Truver over Hunting in OT in wrestlebacks
Gunsett over McGhee
Luevano over Olsen
2 freshman in the semis at 138 - Fattore & Lemeley
Levitz over Vaughn
Freshman Lucas Davison sneaks into the semis at 160
wouldn't call this one an upset....levitz is WAY underrated.....he is one solid tuff wrestler.....when he caught tony in that headlock it was over....his loss to pruitt in the semis was closer than that score indicates......he had pruitt twice on his back in that nasty headlock, but pruitt worked his way out.....luckily tony was able to avenge his loss to levitz in the 3rd place final but i see some tuff rematches in the near future......
the al smith was once again an awesome tournament with some fantastic wrestling both days.......
-
i don't know what the answer would be in this case because it happened 3 times but it was a crazy match!......i'm not sure that the refs knew for sure either as the call seemed to vary a bit.....
reitz pins black
