BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Sophomore Brandon James and junior Cody LeCount kept their undefeated seasons intact Saturday (Jan. 12), leading the Perry Meridian wrestling team to the championship of the Conference Indiana meet. James, a 126-pounder, and LeCount, a 132-pounder, were two of seven individual champions as the Falcons totaled 288.5 points to claim the team championship for the 12th consecutive season. Bloomington South was runner-up with 250 points followed by Franklin Central with 172.5, Lawrence Central with 143 and Columbus North with 116. Southport (79), Pike (70) and Bloomington North (66) rounded out the eight-team competition at Bloomington North. Five more Perry Meridian athletes completed their day with just one loss for the season, but only four of them emerged as CI champions. The blue ribbon winners were junior Jacob Cottey at 113 pounds (now 26-1 for the season), junior Aidan Kenny at 120 pounds (18-1), senior Nick Bova at 138 pounds (26-1) and senior Donte Winfield at 285 pounds (26-1). Another PM winner was senior Keanu Cooper, who prevailed at 152 pounds with a 21-5 season mark. At 182 pounds, however, Bloomington South junior Dakota Thacker pinned Perry Meridian senior Jake Masengale at 4:58. That result gave the CI crown to Thacker with a 30-2 mark, while Masengale was the league runner-up with a 26-1 record. The Panthers had four other individual winners, including senior Clayton Fiddler at 195 pounds. Fiddler edged Franklin Central senior Mike Riffle 3-2 in overtime to stay unbeaten at 32-0. Other Bloomington South champions were sophomore Griffin Schermer at 106 pounds (29-3), senior Seth Seitzinger at 160 pounds (25-6) and senior Conor Galvin at 170 pounds (29-3). Lawrence Central and Pike each produced one individual champion. LC senior Myron Hamilton captured the 220-pound title with a 7-3 decision over Franklin Central junior Seth Vaughn. Pike senior Eric Dobbins prevailed at 145 pounds, squeezing out a 5-4 win over Lawrence Central senior Scott Swingle. Franklin Central did not have any champions, but the Flashes had four runner-up efforts. Those included Riffle, Vaughn, junior Travis McMillan at 126 and senior Zach Labens at 160. Columbus North's top results were four athletes in fourth place -- junior Evan Speaker at 106, junior Cody Speaker at 120, senior Armando Cordova at 170 and junior Kenny King at 285. Southport's effort was paced by sophomore Dameion Rutledge, third at 106, and senior Casey Kauffman, fourth at 113. Bloomington North had three third-place finishers -- senior Jeremy Arthur at 120, sophomore David Ray at 126 and senior Dominque Davis at 170. COLUMBUS, Ind. -- Senior Zeke Gomez and sophomore Brandon Woods each went 5-0 on Saturday (Dec. 8), leading the Columbus North wrestling team to a fourth-place finish in the Columbus North Invitiational. Gomez won three matches at 132 pounds and bumped up to 138 pounds to claim two other wins and improve to 14-2 for the season. Woods went undefeated at 220 pounds to improve to 16-9. The Bull Dogs opened the 10-team event by defeated Brown County (56-13), Madison (58-19) and Edgewood (36-33) in pool matches. The hosts then dropped a 59-15 decision to New Palestine to finish second in the pool. In the crossover match for event placing, defending champion Triton Central defeated Columbus North 40-28 for third place. The 3-2 effort for the day moved the Bull Dogs' dual record to 13-8 for the season. ?We wrestled better than we have in the past,? CN coach Nick Skinner told The Republic. ?We?re still making progress.? Other notable performances by Columbus North athletes came from junior Kenny King, junior Cody Speaker and junior Andrew Jones. King went 3-0 at 285 pounds, while Speaker and Jones posted respective 3-2 marks at 120 and 152 pounds. New Palestine won the event championship. BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Seniors Zeke Gomez and Luis Cambron each went 4-1 Saturday (Dec. 1), leading the Columbus North wrestling team to a 3-2 record in the Bloomington North Invitational. The Bull Dogs dropped their opener 52-26 to Center Grove but rallied for a 63-14 decision over the host Cougars and nipped Martinsville 36-35. CN then fell 61-10 to Bloomington South but closed the day with a 48-23 win over Lawrence Central. The Bull Dogs' season dual record moved to 10-6 with the results. "We were 3-2 as a team, but there was marked improvement over last season," CN coach Nick Skinner said, noting a 1-4 performance a year ago. "We are going to stick to the basics and keep plugging away." Gomez wrestled at 132 pounds and he defeated Center Grove's Nathan Carmichael 22-11, pinned Bloomington North's Caleb Sullivan, pinned Martinsville's Cayden Whitaker and pinned Lawrence Central's Joe Smedley. Gomez's only setback was getting pinned by Bloomington South's Devin Broukal. Cambron, at 195 pounds, opened with a pin of Center Grove's Josh Kuechler. He followed with a pin of Bloomington North's Casey Brock and a 10-4 win over Martinsville's Ben Schoolcraft. Cambron dropped a 5-0 decsion to Bloomington South's Clayton Fiddler and finished with a pin of Lawrence Central's Quinten Rabin. Columbus North returns to the mats at 9 a.m. Saturday (Dec. 8) when it hosts the Columbus North Invitational. COLUMBUS, Ind. -- Chase Chapman recorded a pin at 145 pounds, but that was the only victory Thursday evening as the Columbus North wrestling team dropped a dual match to Franklin. The visiting Grizzly Cubs took all the other matches en route to a 69-6 victory in the Bill Stearman Athletic Complex. Chapman won by fall over Franklin's Joe Stevenson at the 5:28 mark of his match. "Chase came through with very solid top work to pull off a win for us," Columbus North coach Nick Skinner said. "We made a lot of mistakes that were capitalized on. We were missing a few starters, but we still can't wrestle like that and expect to compete with solid opponents. "Back to the drawing board. Big duals coming up on Saturday." The Bull Dogs now are 7-4 in dual matches following a 7-3 mark last weekend in the Harrison Invitational in West Lafayette. Pain was theme of the night for the Bull Dogs on Thursday as No. 6 Franklin registered a 69-6 victory in Columbus. ?We knew what it would be like,? said Skinner, who has entered his second season as head coach. ?This is the kind of competition you see at the state and semi-state level. We knew we would have tough matches.? Even so, Skinner wants to continue scheduling tough teams. ?We?ve added more tough teams that I know will hurt our record, but if we are going to build the program to where we want it to be, you have to wrestle the top 10 teams.? Bull Dogs 145-pounder Chase Champman scored the team?s only victory, a pin with 52 seconds remaining in the third period against Franklin?s Joseph Stevenson. Even that was a hard-fought win. Midway through the second period, the match was tied at 4, but then Champman took over from there, wearing out Stevenson with his aggression. ?Chase had a decent second and third period on top,? Skinner said. ?Today he really seemed to turn the corner. He rode tough.? North 120-pounder Cody Speaker fell behind the Grizzly Cubs? Peyton Reese 5-1 after two periods before coming back strong in the third period. After a takedown got Speaker to within 6-5 with only about 25 seconds remaining, he got a little too tied up with Reese, who managed to score a reverse and ride him out for an 8-5 win. Skinner said he wanted Speaker to let go Reese, giving him a one-point escape, immediately after the takedown, so he would have a chance to tie the match with another takedown. It was a strategy error that Speaker isn?t likely to commit as the season progresses. Reese managed to stall out the final seconds with a ?legs? ride, a move that almost all Franklin?s wrestlers are adept at executing. ?Against Franklin, we knew that was coming,? Skinner said of the legs ride. ?I guess we have to go back to the drawing board on that one.? North 170-pounder Armando Cordova lost a majority decision to Franklin?s Garrett Fentz, but Skinner praised his effort. ?Armando has been wrestling all of four weeks,? Skinner said. ?We threw him out there, and we were thrilled he could score some points.? One of North?s top wrestlers, 195-pounder Luis Cambron, was out with a cut over his eye suffered in last weekend?s action. Bull Dogs 106-pounder Evan Speaker was ill, so North had to forfeit that weight class. Top-ranked Perry Meridian captured the championship with 309 points. No. 13 Warren Central placed second with 251, followed by Franklin Central (208 1/2), Jeffersonville (171), Columbus North (109), Beech Grove (102), Bloomington North (85) and Speedway (11). Junior Luke Teague led the Bull Dogs with a second-place finish at 182 pounds. Sophomore Brandon Woods took third at 220.
