  1. Just added some new clinicians for Arlington's RTC!!! Wait until you see the rest of the line-up! Also, I will be running this Tuesday's RTC @ Perry Meridian, so if you haven't had the opportunity to get a glimpse of Coach Hull, be sure to check us out at Perry!!! Either way, be sure to come out to Arlington this Wednesday to see the great Coach Tonte from Perry Meridian and Indiana's own, Chris "Lights Out" Lytle, co-facilitate our RTC. Don't miss this great opportunity to see these two great wrestling minds together in a different light!!!
  2. [move]Wednesday's RTC @ Arlington from 6 pm - 7:45 pm [/move] Below is our current list of clinicians and dates. We will post updates regularly, so stay tuned! We have an awesome line-up of other great clinicians getting on the schedule, including Steve Bradley, Matt Coughlin, Cashe Quiroga, Joe Dubuque, Angel Escobedo and many more! 3. ISWA site lists 1,135 competitors, which is a pretty good amount. I personally was impressed with the IHSAA State Champions, placers and qualifiers who were in attendence. They could have easily stayed at home but chose to continue wrestling, which means they are truly dedicated to advancing in their craft. But, yes, under the circumstances I thought the ISWA ran a pretty efficient tournament. I know we (Jireh) brought 25 kids and our coaches were running back and forth all day because it was constant action for us as a team. As a new program, it's always nice to still be coaching at the end of the day. Great job ISWA and of course our place winners Charlie McGinley (3rd @ Junior 135), Robert Duncan (4th @ Junior 130), Deondre Wilson (6th @ Cadet 105) and Greg Johnson (8th @ Cadet 152) - 3 of which are first year wrestlers.
  4. @ Arlington 4825 N. Arlington Avenue Indianapolis 6pm-7:45pm Door 16 Wrestling room upstairs of East Gym Come and try us out tonight. A few state qualifiers, placers and champs coming through...Be there to get in a great workout!!! 226.2987
  5. I just finished taking it and there was not an option for classing team state, but there is a comment box at the bottom where I wrote a personal message to Mr. Cox on this matter. At least the IHSAA is taking the time out to entertain the wrestling community. I hope it will make a difference...
  6. RTC Tonight @ Arlington High School 6pm - 8pm 4825 N. Arlington Avenue Indianapolis, IN 46226 Please enter through Door # 16 between East and West Gyms Wrestling Room located upstairs in East Gym by weight room There will be signs posted. Look forward to seeing you there!!
  7. Dominator - It was nice seeing you out at Beech Grove the other day. Your son is looking better and better, so I know the little one will not be far behind him. We do have some guys I feel that could contend here shortly. As long as they continue focusing on getting better more so than just winning a title, the accolades will fall in place. I do plan on running a few other RTC's this season. Right now we are just working out the details so the information should be coming out soon. Stay posted!!!! Take care.
  8. Hello, Indianamat! Welcome to a new season of ISWA wrestling!!! As you all may be aware, spring and summer wrestling is where you see the biggest growth in your technique and success on the mat. It is highly recommended and proven that attending a Regional Training Center (RTC) will undoubtedly help you become a better wrestler!!! Arlington Community High School has been fortunate enough to host a Regional Training Center on Wednesdays - through the months of March, April and May - and we will be hitting it hard! We are not on the level of the Perry Meridian's, where we have 100 kids in the room, but we do have a host of competitive and dedicated wrestlers in attendence looking to excel at this sport. I implore you to give us a try on Wednesday if you are in or around the Indianapolis area - AT LEAST ONCE! I guarantee that you will receive excellent instruction and a great workout in a fun and competitive environment. I will post the clinicians in the future but our dates and contact information is below! Hope to see you there!!!! 3/2 3/9 3/16 3/23 3/30 4/6 4/13 4/20 4/27 5/4 5/11 5/18 5/25 Arliongton Comunity High School 4825 N. 9. Not sure on individual results but, in regards to Arlington (as if anyone cares), we went 0-5 on the day. The kids looked much better, although far from elite, but they showed signs of progress. Granted, we only competed with 7 kids, but individually everyone made strides to attempt, or stop, something they hadn't in past matches. This entire year was a wash from the beginning but I was relatively proud of our kids. If it weren't for grades we would have brought an entire team, so we are working dilligently to change that culture within our program. When at full strength, we won't neceessarily beat the elite but we would be able to compete with teams somewhere in the middle of the pack - which is a far cry from years past. I was definitely impressed with the Venezia/Campbell match the most as both kids have a hard nose and wrestle for 6 minutes. Great job teams and thanks to Mr. Fox and Coach McGinley for hosting another great tournament! The hospitality room doesn't hurt either, especially when you are sharing it with some of the best looking coaches in the state!

  11. Fun thread! If down by 1 or 2 points: Whatever it takes. Typically this doesn't mean a specific move but more so a combination of moves, combined with relentless pressure, and of course the main ingredient: heart. The idea, and what I'm trying to get our guys to understand, is to finish in this manner even when you are winning. If down by 3+: The Super XJ9000 Sub-Atomic Gamma Ray Flux, or better known as the S.X.J.S.A.G.R.F for short. Just kidding. It's always interesting hearing people's names for certain moves so I had to put that out there. I say see above but make sure you put them on their back.
  12. Indianapolis Arlington will be there and looking forward to it.
  13. In regards to Arlington, there is just no telling right now. We have our favorites but it all depends on who shows up - figuratively and literally. I've spent the past 2 weeks exhausting myself on grades, attendence, psychoanalysis, etc. If it wasn't for our vital coaching staff going over the fundamentals with them, we would be in the library every day if it were up to me. Our guys will definitely come to compete though, they simply just lack the mat time right now to do anything significant unless we catch some breaks. We have kids that "wrestle" but haven't developed a team of true "wrestlers" just yet. Getting closer though. Honestly, I personally don't have any real expectations of our team right now other than go out and follow our philosophy. Still, contrary to better judgement, I guess I can put out a TENTATIVE line-up: 103 - Deondre Wilson - 9 112 - Victor Gonzalez - 10 119 - Demetrius Ford - 10 125 - Derek Landers - 9 130 - Robert Duncan - 10 135 - Chris Thomas - 10 140 - Desean Harney - 10 145 - LaQuan Allen - 11 152 - Dareon Fuller - 12 160 - Roderick Day - 10 171 - Noah Perdue - 9 189 - Dave Flores - 12 215 - Gilbert Hutchinson - 10 285 - D'Ante Dorsey - 11
  14. I cannot predict any finals matchups because I don't know too many of the kids wrestling. With this officially being my first year, I have not paid any attention to who is doing what. I know Willis from Cathedral has the skills, on top of the countless other Fighting Irish looking to make another run. Although young, they are very talented and will definitely repeat this year. The question is how much are they going to win by. I'm sure McGinley will have them trying to run the tables. The main person from Cathedral I am rooting for, outside our guy of course, is Brandt Larson. One of the best kids I have ever had the pleasure of knowing and rolling around with, and his work ethic and knowledge of the sport will take him very far in my opinion. I would drop some names of some of Arlington's kids but it is too early in their career's to put them out there and they haven't done anything notable - YET! Nevertheless, I look forward to a decent City Tournament for Arlington next weekend, but moreso to having this conversation this time next year!
  15. The International Lytes, Black and Red and/or Red, White & Blue were pretty slick. Also the original Asic Tigers (Dan Gables or John Smith, not sure which) were also a nice pair of throwbacks. What was interesting was how much my style/mindset changed with each shoe I put on. I will say that Coach Hardman's Russian shoes are nice!!!
  16. Honestly, guys, I don't know about you but I actually feel a little bit better about it all. Like getting an "F" in school - you don't feel so bad when the next guy got an "F" too As with many regrets, listening to some of these stories makes me appreciate what I was fortunate enough to achieve. Seriously, though, I'm proud of everyone who posted on this because some people never can get over it, and putting it out here for all to see makes it a little easier to carry. I guarantee there are people that have read this post and are still too upset or afraid to face the fact that even the best of us lose at some time or another. It's o.k. that you still want to blast double leg the guy if you happened to see him at Conseco, but just try and let it go......
  17. In response to Coach Hardman's post on the greaatest match ever....how about the one you wish you could have back??? We all know no one ever completely lives down a loss, but I am secure with myself now to post this. Vince Sessa, State Finals my senior year. I was returning State Champ at 112 and he was returning Runner-Up at 119. Needless to say, we switched places. I hear about that garbage to this day - still. What I learned? Wrestle to win NOT wrestle not to lose. I don't think he was a better wrestler, but I do know that he wanted it more than I did that day! Great job Sessa! :'( Which leads me to my next match: Chris Kelly (PA) at the H.S. nationals. I actually dropped down a weight class because I heard Sessa did and I wanted to get that loss back. Nevertheless, he didn't but I still stayed down and had a pretty good tourney. I practicly ran through everyone but Kelly, a 2x S.C. from PA, got over on me as I was smoking him. Got knocked out from a questionable slam and tried to continue. He ended up working himself back into the match and beat me by 1, and that was the difference between me being a H.S. National Champ and placing 3rd. Sux. What I learned? Explosion from bottom doesn't mean too much when you don't have hand control. Pretty expensive lesson. Indianamat.com, let's relive our nightmares....let those demons out!
  18. Great posts! I hear some great names on this and can think of dozens of matches that were awesome! Leavell vs. Maldanado part 1 and 2, Cannon vs. Leavell part 1 and 2, Bradley vs. Torres, Hill vs. Brimm, Hill vs. Pleak part 1 and 2, Bradley vs. Leavell, etc. So, because it's hard to lock in on one, I will have to go with one I know for sure: an exhibition match the other day between two autistic kids that went harder than most people I've seen. The entire 6 minutes was just one big scramble, so much so that when the match was over the ref raised both hands and the crowd went wild! I am not being funny by any means as all coaches know that we can't teach heart, and I wish I could take just a piece of theirs and spread it throughout our entire room. It meant so much to both. Great kids and great match! Thegreatest H.S. match I've ever wrestled? Probably Ryan Schoettle in the Semi-State Finals my sophomore year. I would choose this match above all of my state finals and national matches because of two reason: 1) it gave me the confidence to be considered among the state's elite, and 2) was the start of my media coverage throughout my H.S. career. I've had some other good matches I can recall (vs. Steve Bradley part 3,4, and 5, Leroy Vega, Mac Taylor, Nathan Challis, Justin Slone, Corey Williams, etc.) and others (two in H.S.) I'd like to get back (Sessa and Kelly) Arrghhhh. Sounds like a new post!!!!
  19. Wow! Some really good names! I figured Go-Go (Sunungura Rusunguko) would appreciate his name being thrown in there if anyone could spell it correctly. He's my cousin and Asst. Coach so I get to make fun of him - a little bit anyway. Undefeated Heavyweight State Champ, Black Belt, and simply a monster's monster.
  20. A few of us were sitting back talking "wrestling" of course, and the ridiculous topic came up of who had the best wrestling name. Past, present, and future, both locally and nationally, who had the best - not just feared - name? I know it's silly but we were having some fun. Some of the names that came up included Tommy Cash, Maurice Gunn, Storm Crosby, Cashe Querga, Drake Stein, Vernon Cannon, Case Hooper, Mich Sliga, Angel Escobedo, T.J. Slay, etc - all of which are better than mine I think. My personal favorite was a guy named Turk Lords, a 4x NAIA and Junior Greco National Champ from Montana - a beast on the mat and a name that matched. My question, Indianamat, is who do you think has the coolest/best wrestling name? Have fun....
  21. Thanks for the support! BUT, Coach Rhorman died?!?!?!????!!?!?!?!?!? No wonder he hadn't called me back!!! That is terrible to hear. He came by a few times in the beginning and we were greatly looking forward to his expertise. It seemed interesting enough but, through all the cultural and generational gaps, we would sit and talk for hours about wrestling. With his knowledge as an AD and former Head wrestling coach his mind was invaluable. My condolences go to the Rhorman family. Interesting note on Rhorman: He told me Lance Rhodes NEVER won state. He said he probably should have but I repeat, per Marty Rhorman, Lance Rhodes never won state. From my understanding he told his kids he did, which goes to show me that once you get older, those losses never go away. Even still, that never took away from Rhodes being one of the best coaches ever. Everyone I know that was coached by Lance Rhodes may or may not have liked him at the time, but they all admire and respect him to this day. The team heritage info definately was entertaining putting together. It was interesting seeing the numbers correlate from Jim Ellis up until today. Both Ellis and Grundy were lifers. But if you are interested in creating your own site, I used www.eteamz.com but there is also www.varsitnetworks.com Both have free basic packages and the premium package for eteamz was about $158 per year + time getting the info and pics all together. This site took me about a week currently. Thanks again for the support!
  22. Just an ammy, but he is well on his way. MMA is saturated right now with wanna-be fighters who either don't have the heart, dedication, or money to be an elite. Guerra is broke as a joke (lol) but he has the other two and has already trained with some of the toughest guys from Mitrione to your local Joe. He trains twice a day, 6 times a week, and sometimes 7 depending on the workouts. A natural I think and I've been around some of the biggest stars in the business. Barring any catastrophe, he should do farely well. Stay tuned....
  23. Thanks for the support! I'm working on a Wrestling & Football page as well, but there is definately a HUGE correlation between Wrestling and MMA. In order to build an elite program at Arlington I have to deal with the inner-city culture - which is very, very discouraging on a variety of fronts. I figured the quickest way towards garnering interest in our sport, which was almost non-existent at Arlington, I had to unfortunately exploit the violent nature of our inner-city kids. I hate to say it but it's true. Nevertheless, we take this nature, and the fact almost all of the males in school watch UFC, and use it to wrestlings advantage. Men lie and women lie, but numbers don't - so I show them the numbers of wrestlers vs. boxers that crossover into MMA who are successful. I name the colleges or universities thier favorite fighters wrestled at and play on their own competitiveness. I drop the biggest kid in school on his head and make sure all of his friends are around. It wasn't neccessarily the vision I had on building a program but it seems to be working. We had 2 wrestlers last year competing in the Sectionals and we have over 50+ trying out this year. Most importantly, they have to like it before they love it and we all know wrestling isn't the sport you can half-a$$. Some of the things you need to be even a decent wrestler are discipline, dedication, patience, mental fortitude, and, my favorite, character. Once they are hooked is when we can align our expectations of what it takes to become an elite wrestler in our program. So this violent nature then becomes controlled aggression. If they complete our folkstyle, freestyle, and greco schedule for the year then, and only then, we may reward them by training them in MMA for those that want it. You should see wrestling practice...they don't know too much yet but it's like a bunch of little monsters running around. Great kids though. You didn't ask for all that but I'm excitied so thanks for the support!!! Best wishes this season!
  24. Arlington M.S. Head Wrestling Coach, first fight last Saturday in Noblesville, TKO 1:26 in the first round. A little standup, a little G & P, a lot of confidence. Congrats Coach Guerra. We're looking forward to your fight next month on Lytle's show. Get down or lay down baby! Keep training!!!
