Notes from IU vs Iowa

Recommended Posts

285 Chalfant v Telford

Chalfant looked good against Telford but he gassed in the 3rd, then gave up the SV TD. If he continues to compete this way and improves his conditioning he's a high AA who's capable of going on a run at nationals.

125 forfeit again, Duca hurt.

133 Caton v Ramos

Caton can't get anything going against Ramos. Ramos get's to him at will scoring 5 TD's in the 1st. Turns and pins him with a power half. Caton outmatched big time.

141 Raley v Dziewa

Raley nice job sitting the corner defensively and get's the 1st TD then get's reversed. Jeva tough on top, hooks up a rebar tilt and get's a 2 count. 4-2 after 1. Jeva goes down. quick escape. 5-2 Jeva w/ RT.  BEautiful duck by Jeva for the TD. 7-2. Rebar tilt again for full backs then escape 10-3. Jeva with the body lock straight to his back get's another 3 pt NF. 15-3. Nice cutback by Raley for the TD. Good action Raley is a game. Raley catches him on a shot and puts him on his back for the TD and 3 NF. Jeva fights off and escapes. Jeva another TD and get's the major. 19-10.

149  Roach v Grothus

Roach good handfighting and movement, in on 3 deep shots can't finish. Roach get's taken down and ridden to end the 1st. Grothus goes down and get's out immediately. Roach continues to flash talent and ability. Needs to work on finishing shots, being able to ride when he needs to, and getting stronger. Roach takes neutral in the 3rd. Roach continues to attack and tries to win the match which I like. Tries the headlock. Gets in on a body lock again can't finish. Grothus with the 10-3 major and 2:35ish of RT.

157 Walsh v Kelly (backup 149) (no DSJ?)

Walsh comes out angry and starts wrecking Kelly and doesn't stop. 17-6 major.

165 Leblanc v Moore

Moore right in on him for the TD. Moore riding hard and making it look easy then cuts him. Moore right in again for another TD. Leblanc getting totally dominated. Moore goes down and escapes in 1 second. Another easy TD for Moore. Moore humiliating Leblanc and toying with him. Leblanc goes down, Moore cuts him. Leblanc straight forward pressure, no angles. poor handfighting. Ryan looks tired and slow and demoralized. He got owned by Moore in every position and it was ugly. 12-3 Moore. Sad performance.

174 Jackson v Evans

Evans really working the football tie, Jackson defends well. Jackson looking reshot mostly but moving and handfighting well. Evans working on a serious blue collar takedown but Jackson shows tremendous balance and gets the scramble TD to end the 1st 2-0. Evans goes down and immediately escapes 2-1. Quick go behind TD for Evans. Jackson again flashing crazy talent. 3-2 Evans after 2. Jackson goes neutral. Evans with a crazy reshot TD. 6-2 Evans w/ RT. It goes in the loss column but that's a win for the freshman Jackson in my book. This kid is very promising.

184 Sheridan v Brooks (backup 184 no Lofthouse)

Sheridan handfighting hard but no lateral movement. Good scramble by Sheridan btu Brooks gets to him for the TD. Brooks chooses down and escapes immediately. Sheridan dives and Brooks goes behind. Brooks just dogging on Sheridan now. Sheridan looking tired down 7-1. Takes bottom and Brooks goes to work on him again. Returns him hard then cuts him. Brooks with a straight up Iowa style blue collar mauling of Sheridan. 12-3 beatdown. Sam Brooks is not your regular freshman backup. He's a stud and wrecked the #15 ranked kid last week. But 12-3? Another sad performance.

Hawks lead 34-4

197 Goldman v Burak

Goldman nice underhook to high single can't finish. Couldn't finish same shot against NW. Burak in on a HC good scramble by Goldman. Burak another nice HC and get's the TD and rides out the 1st. 2-0 Burak. Burak takes down and escapes in 6 seconds. Absolutely ZERO riding for IU except for Walsh. Goldman straight forward, no angles and getting reachy. Beautiful post HC by Burak off the reach for the TD 5-0.  Rides out Goldman chooses down. Burak cuts him 5-1. Beautiful double by Burak. Goldman flat footed and giving straight pressure, and walks in to the double. Another easy double Burak pouring it on 9-2. 10-2 major decision

Hawks dominate 38-4

The good: Walsh looked like he cared and dominated Kelly. Jackson, Roach, Chalfant, Raley wrestled hard and competed.

The bad: LeBlanc, Sheridan, Goldman got owned. Embarassing.

Ongoing themes: Tough to judge them too much on this dual. One thing that obviously sticks out is the general inability to ride at all.  The team needs to continue to get better at creating scoring opportunities and FINISHING shots. Team is starting to look very "Simmonsish" if you know what I mean.
