Folkstyle Nationals

I'm just curious, why does Indiana limit the number of people that can qualify for USAW Folkstyle Nationals? I know they take teams out the from the state placers, but why not let individuals that were not able to participate at state, to sign up on their own?

I'm not saying if it was opened up there would be a mad rush from Indiana participants, but why not allow any of our state wrestlers to go if they choose to?

Indiana (ISWA) does not limit the number of wrestlers that may participate in the USAW Folkstyle Nationals. USA Wrestling does place limits on the total number of participants for the event, as follows; Kids and Veterans will be capped at 1500 wrestlers, while, Cadets and Juniors will be capped at 1300 wrestlers. The ISWA takes a “Team” of Cadet & Junior wrestlers who simply sign-up to be a team member during the specified period and who then participate in the ISWA state. Any and all wrestlers are welcome and encouraged to participate in the USAW Folkstyle Nationals. Many clubs; i.e. Bloomington South, Columbus East, Perry Meridian, Penn, etc., take their own “teams” of wrestlers and many other wrestlers travel and compete independently. However, they are simply required to participate in the ISWA state in order to “qualify” for participation in the nationals. If a wrestler is not able to participate at state due to extreme circumstances they may petition the ISWA for a waiver and may be permitted to participate at nationals. Each petition is evaluated and ruled upon independently and supporting proof may be required.

The ISWA is the USA Wrestling sanctioned organization within the state of Indiana. In an effort to promote the organization within the state it is not unreasonable to expect a wrestler to simply participate in their own state tournament in order to progress to the national level of the parent organization.
