Weekly, Shepherd earn wins in 58-7 loss to Mater Dei

SOUTHRIDGE ? Alonzo Shepherd at 112 pounds and Renaldo Weekly at 145 were Jeffersonville?s only winners in a 58-7 loss to third-ranked Evansville Mater Dei at Wednesday?s Team Wrestling Regional at Southridge.

 

Shepherd, ranked seventh in the state, defeated Evan Vibbert in a major decision, 12-4. Weekly, ranked fourth in Indiana, edged Sam Riggs, 5-4.

 

?Overall, it was a great competition,? Jeff coach Danny Struck said. ?Mater Dei is potentially this year?s state champions, and for us to get to have competition before (Satuday?s individual) regional and (next Saturday?s) semistate is outstanding. It reminds us where we are and shows our weaknesses, so that we can make sure we work on them in the upcoming weeks.?

 

Junior Elijah Curtley was pinned late against Josh Boots, who is ranked No. 3 in the state at 189 points, but not until after Curtley held a 5-2 lead in the final minutes of the match.

 

?We were very proud of Elijah,? Struck said. ?He got the first two takedowns in the match and showed that he can have an outstanding run at the state finals this year. He was fired up by the loss, and we think that will motivate him for regional.?

 

Mater Dei went on to win the regional title with a victory over Castle, which had beaten Jasper in the other regional semifinal, in the championship match, 51-21.

 

Because of weather around the state, the Southridge Regional is the only regional that took place on Wednesday. Most are rescheduled for tonight, but some have been pushed back to as late as next Wednesday.
