O'Brien wrestles away a victory from Wellisch

By Steve Cofield of Yahoo!

He's been called "The Human Blanket" by some. It cost him his gig on two occasions with the UFC. Jake O"Brien, a former wrestler at Purdue, tried to to stand and trade with Christian Wellisch but those wrestling instincts are hard to control. And for some judges, takedowns alone can win you a fight. "Irish" Jake scored nine takedowns throughout the fight but never controlled Wellisch on the ground and in six of the cases Wellisch was back to his feet within 20 seconds. Judges Cecil Peoples and Nelson Hamilton saw no value in Wellisch getting back to his feet. They gave 29-28 scores to O'Brien while Marcos Rosales had it 29-28 for Wellisch.

"The Hungarian Nightmare" also caught a bad break. He landed more shots on the feet in the second and the third but it was his face that looked like a crimson mask at the end. Cage Writer had it 29-28 for Wellisch.

O'Brien did look to have more gas throughout fight so the cut didn't hurt the former heavyweight. When he did stand, he showed a good chin he just couldn't match the volume of Wellisch on the feet.
