North Central's Ethan Cuevas went into the Marion County Tournament in December as the top-seeded heavyweight, but the unranked wrestler didn't seem to be a clear-cut favorite.

After pinning three of four county opponents and posting an impressive performance in the Spartan Classic in Connersville over the holiday break, Cuevas rose to No. 13 in the indianamat.com individual rankings.

He brings a 22-1 record into today's eight-team North Central Invitational. Panthers coach Lou Silverman considers Cuevas' county tournament a springboard into the second half of the season.

"He's always been confident in his talent, and I don't think I've ever had any kid who works as hard as Ethan does," Silverman said, "but I think the county was definitely a big confidence boost for him."
