  7. I, too, would like to congratulate Coach Ratliff on his new position. I think he will do a great job as an IHSWCA officer. Best of Luck, Trent
  8. I cannot believe we are headed toward our 4th annual Classed Team State Duals event. It seems like it was just yesterday that a group of people were kicking around the concept for this event. For what it is worth, I am pleased with the growth that this event has gone through. Most worthy ventures have experienced growing pains of some sort, and this event is no different. Although there is an official IHSWCA board of directors roster, there are roughly 5 people who have done the lion's share of the "behind the scenes" planning and work for this event. I do not say this to lay blame or capture a pat on the back; it's just the reality of the situation. Areas of Growth that have Occurred * 24 to 36 teams (over a 3 year period) * Westfield HS to Ball State to FW Coliseum - It should be noted that Coach O'Neill and Westfield were integral in pulling this off in the first 2 yrs * 1100 fans -- 1200 fans -- 1800 fans (yes, we added teams in year 3 but the event has shown growth in spectatorship) With respect to the "Areas of Growth" and my comments above, the IHSWCA will have important decisions to make surrounding this event for the 2016-17 (5th annual) event. We have been very fortunate to have the support of the ISWA and our top wrestling officials in pulling together on the actual day of the event each season. We do appreciate the work done by many people during the weeks leading into the actual event, but I am not kidding though when I say that a small hand full of people work the other 11 months of the year in planning the event. There is no doubt in my mind, as the planning committee chairman, that this event can grow by leaps and bounds over the next few years; BUT the IHSWCA will have to be careful that this event doesn't become too big of a creature to manage. The IHSWCA does not host this event to make money. It has been nice that we have had some monies left over each year after the bills are paid, but again, we have never made a decision for this event with the intent to profit from it. With that being said, to take this event to a bigger venue and the "next level", there will no doubt need to be sponsorships secured. We just haven't had to do that so far, so an emphasis (and a person) hasn't really been placed on garnering sponsorships (but that may need to change after next season). Areas of consideration for future growth and/or solidifying the event * Might be nice in the future for the participating teams to not have to pay an entry fee (currently, all of this money pays for the referees) - no participating team in the first 3 years has complained about this fee. All of these coaches have been very supportive. * There has been ample discussion on utilizing a larger facility. - We realize that Ft. Wayne will create a farther drive for the Evansville area schools. With that said, the FW Coliseum simply fell into place for us for next season. - I agree with the post made that most all championship events we hold are in central Indiana. It will be a positive to hold 1 of these events in a different part of the state. Although a little inconvenient for a few teams, it should be an overall positive. * Adding more teams? - This gets into the overall scope and objective of the event. (i.e. - just trying to crown the best team OR offer top notch competition to more than 36 teams?) - The size of the venue; # of mats; length of the event (# of days); selection process... would all be impacted by adding additional teams. I appreciate the dialogue and ideas being tossed around for this event. I just wanted to share some pertinent points and possible limiting factors that have to be considered as the IHSWCA moves forward with this event. Coach McCormick
  9. We have 2 mats committed from 2 Ft. Wayne area schools at this point. Need 10 more mats. Let me know if you are interested.
  10. e-mail from Mr. Brubeck below (April 7, 2014) - I was very clear in my request that the IHSWCA, and its constituents, would provide the manpower behind the event. All they would have had to provide are the custodians, a "go to" person/liaison (Coach Warthan agreed to fill this role) and a technology person in case we had technology issues. - I asked that they shoot me "double time" rates for their custodians and holiday rates for their facilities. I simply wanted a starting point where we could start negotiations and possibly come to an agreement. They did not want to talk numbers. - I am not questioning their integrity. I know they are good people. They just didn't want to bother with our event given the dates. ======================== "Hello Trent, In regards to your event on either 12-27-14 or 1-3-15 we have done a good bit of discussing the event. The January 3rd date is not possible due to other happenings on campus, basketball games. The December 27th date is not possible due to timing, size, campus being shut down, and ability to staff University facility needs that day. The needs of this event are too great to discuss rental fees at this time. I am willing to discuss future needs. I apologize and best of luck in your search." Thanks, Bob Brubeck Assistant Athletic Director for Facilities and Game Day Operations Assistant Wrestling Coach University of Indianapolis
  11. Wabash's facilities would not be able to handle the crowd. We were at capacity at Ball State this past season. Thought I had it worked out with UIndy last year. Their wrestling coach said he really wanted it; but their facility director did not want to be bothered with the extra work load. IU, nor Purdue, were explored. To be honest, assumed that they would be too expensive for their facilities that could hold such an event. For years, Purdue's wrestling program had to hold their own wrestling camps at St. Joe College because Purdue was simply too expensive and/or other logistical barriers. It was tricky enough working out the finer points of the event with Ball State (which was right in my back yard) IU and Purdue could be options to explore in the future if we can afford them (and if they will work with us). It has been my experience over the years with the larger universities (and some smaller ones too) that there are layers and layers and layers of people and red tape to navigate in utilizing their facilities. It can be quite tricky, and frustrating, to negotiate and come to terms with them. The Mat Mayhem seemed to run smoothly at the FW Coliseum and the Coliseum is somewhat "wrestling friendly" as they host a semi-state already. They are good with our wrestlers bringing in their coolers during registration along with other small details that are wrestling specific. I do understand the hardship that this can put on a team. I certainly don't want, or mean, to discredit the travel distance concerns. Some of these issues (in today's society) do come down to specific school corporation policies. Some schools won't allow their teams to go out of state; some have a capped travel distance due to financial constraints; and there are many other "school specific" limitations placed on coaches. I guess I don't have a good answer that would solve all of those type of challenges across the state. (Coach Alcorn -- specific to your case... I would not want to ride a big yellow bus for 5 hours either. Does your corporation have mini-buses? If not, would they allow you to rent vans? Just a thought to try to speed your trip up.) Ball State was an option again for next year, but it was very, very taxing on our (Yorktown) wrestling program as we supplied 9 mats, 11 portable bleachers, and other finer points of the event. The Yorktown wrestling program did get compensated for the use of the mats and bleachers, but someone had to organize, haul, lay down, tear up and haul back all of that equipment. Again, it was extremely taxing on our team to compete in the event and supply the said equipment over the holiday's. If we would have had to use Ball State again next year, I would have made it happen, but it was not my first choice. We will see how the FW Coliseum pans out this year. It could very well be that the event will grow to a point where we can indeed afford a blue-chip facility in central Indiana and/or attract sponsorships to support a large, central Indiana facility. I am serious when I say we could look at facilities in the Evansville area. If the price is right, and other logistical necessities fell into place, I think it would be awesome to bring our event to southern Indiana for a year. I certainly don't want anyone to think that we don't appreciate our programs in the south. I assure you that no one is intentionally trying to make life difficult for our wrestling programs in the south. Things have come together nicely (so far) in securing the FW Coliseum, so that is the direction we went for next season. Coach McCormick
  12. 1. I all but begged all of the large Indianapolis area high schools last year to host; and none of them wanted to do it. 2. The Ft. Wayne Coliseum will be a little more suited for our event than what Ball State was. The event's spectator count grew from 1200 in 2013-14 to 1800 this past season. The spectator numbers have steadily grown each year. 3. The Ft. Wayne Coliseum is one hour and 30 minutes north of Muncie. (i.e. - an hour and a half further than what you drove last year). 4. Certainly, when an event is moved to one of the extreme ends of the state, someone is going to have a farther drive and be out a little more time and gas money. You will not be required to miss school though as schools will be on their holiday break. 5. We could certainly look at hosting the event in 2016-17 in the Evansville area, but then the 30+ schools from central and northern Indiana would likely complain about the drive they have. (i.e - we will likely never please everyone) 6. The Indianapolis area would indeed be the most logical selection for this event, but the large high schools don't want it, and the event simply isn't quite big enough to be able to afford the convention center. If the event keeps growing, maybe the Indianapolis convention center will be an option in the future.
  13. The IHSWCA is moving forward with securing the Ft. Wayne Coliseum for the 2015-16 IHSWCA Classed Team State Duals tournament to be held on January 2, 2016. The final contract still needs to be signed by both sides, but we are confident that the event will move to Ft. Wayne next season. The floor space, bleacher arrangement and other event dynamics will work nicely at this top-notch facility. We will be in need of 12 -- full size mats for this event. Although we don't care what color the mats are, we would prefer mats that are in very, very good condition for this event (for obvious reasons). The IHSWCA will pay $200 per mat. The school/team would be responsible for bringing their mat(s) to the Coliseum Friday evening (Jan. 1) and rolling it out and picking the mat up Saturday evening (Jan. 2) at the conclusion of wrestling. As we did this past season, the final teams to wrestle on a mat at the event were gracious in helping roll up their mat at the end which was extremely helpful for those who had to move and load the mats. If you have nice, large (42x42 or 40x40) mats, and would be interested in assisting this event (and making a little money for your wrestling program), please contact Trent McCormick (tmccormick@yorktown.k12.in.us) Thank you, IHSWCA Team State Duals Planning Committee
  14. Yorktown will accept "walk-up" registrants who want to wrestle freestyle tomorrow morning. Registration and Weigh-ins will take place from 7:00 - 8:30am at Yorktown HS. Registration and Weigh-ins will end promptly at 8:30am so the tournament can be processed and wrestling started at 9:30am as advertised. Thank you to those wrestlers who have pre-registered. The Greco-Roman tournament will begin 30 minutes after freestyle ends tomorrow. Coach McCormick
  15. Due to potential bad weather coming in this weekend, the YWC is opting to postpone its folkstyle tournament for safety reasons. We will be rescheduling the folkstyle event in coordination with our Freestyle and Greco-Roman tournament on April 18-19 in the form of an "Ironman" event. Thank you, Coach McCormick
  16. With three years of data under our belt to analyze, and a good amount of feedback from interested parties, the IHSWCA Team State Duals team selection committee, with the outstanding guidance of Mr. Troyer, has finalized the scoring procedures that will be used to establish the field of teams for the 2015-16 Classed Team State Duals Tournament. Please follow the link below to find the full document which outlines the scoring process for teams to put themselves in a position to earn a berth into next season's Classed Team State Duals event. www.ihswca.org/news/selection2015 A big thanks goes out to Mr. Troyer and the selection committee for all of the work they have done in finalizing this important component of our event. Coach McCormick
  17. Although a bit humorous, this topic is a little off kilter. After hearing from several people that the FW Coliseum could be a viable option (i.e. - available date), I did contact the FW Coliseum regarding the IHSWCA Team State Duals for 2015-16. I spoke with a gentleman there who was very helpful, and they would indeed like for us to come, but... The Mat Mayhem coordinators did indeed incorporate a 30 day "no compete" clause in their contract with the Coliseum for other wrestling events. Although I do not agree with someone from another state holding an Indiana facility hostage for amateur wrestling events, it is not my decision to make. The gentleman from the coliseum did say he would get back with me if our requested date for the IHSWCA duals became a viable option. Beyond a bit of "poking and fun", the IHSAA FW semi-state is not in jeopardy of being dislodged from the Coliseum as it has obviously been held at that venue long before the Mat Mayhem event came to town. I just want to be clear on that before "untruths" get too far fetched and too wide spread. Coach McCormick
  18. I have had a couple of athletic directors, from schools that host holiday tournaments around the state, contact me regarding our anticipated date for the IHSWCA Team State Duals for the 2015-16 season. I want to thank them for their patience. We have been swamped trying to prepare for this season's event; yet we realize that holiday tournament directors from around the state are indeed impacted by the IHSWCA's Team State Duals event date selection. For the sake of planning for next season, I would say that the corresponding date of January 2, 2016 would be the likely choice for the IHSWCA in hosting its 4th annual event. Christmas Day and New Year's Day fall on Friday's next season. It's likely that most holiday tournaments around the state will shoot to host their events during the December 28-31 time frame. Barring a major shift in the competition calendar for next season, January 2 would be the best fit for the Team State Duals event. If we had to give an alternative, second choice date, we would likely look at Tuesday, December 22, but we would rather wrestle this championship event on a Saturday (so parents and fans would not be put in a position to have to miss work to attend the event). Thank you, Coach McCormick
  19. Enjoyed watching the Indianamat Team State Duals selection show. Definitely a nice addition to the event. A big thanks to Dane Fuelling (seeding committee chairman) and Joe Caprino (Selection Show host). Dane, and his committee, spent well over 16 hours gathering team data and subsequently carrying out the seeding process and bracket building for this year's event. The IHSWCA is very grateful for their efforts. Joe, and his colleagues, have put together an e-program that can be accessed on Indianamat.com. A big thanks to he, and his staff, for taking this project on late in the game. I enjoyed listening to the guest coaches during the show and thought they did a nice job sharing their teams' goals for this event. I don't know if we will ever be able to make a direct measurement or direct correlation, but I do hope that at least one result of the Team State Duals is the growth of 1A (small) schools' wrestling programs as they now have a championship event that their teams can shine at.
