Great tourney Seymour.
Biscuits and gravy were excellent, as advertised.
Thanks for a good day of wrestling.

Everyone knows "The largest and finest high school gym in the world" is host to the best semi-state tourney.
how about North Side Gymnasium in Elkhart.......at one time it was the largest gym in the nation if I'm not mistaken.......and it has THE most comfortable wooden bleachers throughout......lol

I heard Tom Ryan share a similar message. He said most of the OSU wrestling team is comprised of guys who were multi-sport athletes in high school. I think Stiebers were baseball players.
It is an interesting debate that has been going on for the last 15-20 years as "specialization" has become commonplace. I am curious if we see a shift in this practice back to more multi-sport athletes due to overuse injuries, burnout etc.
Playing more than one sport must produce a more dynamic athlete, in the recruiting opinion of OSU. I'm not an OSU fan but I definitely respect the knowledge and experience of Tom Ryan and Urban Meyer.

Wow. #4 Taylor Walsh got Teched 15-0.
On the bright side...the only bright side...Blanton got his first Big Ten victory.

This is my perspective and I believe this wholeheartedly. A good diet at the beginning or even prior to season starting will put a wrestler in the weight class that he will perform best in. There is a HUGE difference between cutting weight and losing weight. This is something many people inside and outside the sport dont seem to understand. (I didnt when I was coming up). If a wrestlers off season weight is 180 and has 15% body fat, should he be on a healthy low fat diet and working his tail off, he will naturally drop enough weight in a healthy way to most likely reach 170 in just a few weeks. Every wrestler will be different in their body make up, but generally a healthy diet and hard work will get you to the correct weight class and be an extremely healthy individual. Where myself and others run into the biggest problem is the "yo-yo" effect. 180 on Monday, cut to 170 by Friday, up to 175 by Saturday night, back to 180 for Monday. Rinse and Repeat. Your body has no fuel, no water, spent its energy and basically shut its own metabolism down. Do all our kids listen...haha you know better than that. Do some get it, yup...and those typically are the kids who dont tire in the 3rd, can wrestle 5 matches hard in one day and do not hate practice near as much as the others.
While I tend to agree with you, your scenario does not fit all wrestlers.
Problems arise when a 14, 15, 16, or 17 year old hits a growth spurt and is now cutting down from 185/190/195 to get to 170.
I would rather coach a kid who eats healthy and wrestles near his natural weight and maintains a love of the sport (and good attitude/grades/etc.) -- yet loses a match or two because of being undersized -- than a kid who skips meals, hates practice, always tired and grouchy, but wins every match.
-
It sounds like you and/or your son made the correct decision.
Of course all athletes should strive for proper nutrition, but there is too much going on in a high school kids life to be skipping meals. (E.g. Schoolwork, practice, body still maturing, etc.).
Ask anyone who cut a significant amount of weight and they will likely have a horror story (or two) for you about fasting for multiple days or how it slowed their wrestling/physical development somewhere along the line.
I heard Farrell from Greenfield didn't cut much weight his senior year of h.s. I watched him at the beginning of the season drop a match or two while he was adjusting to the heavier weight class. He then avenged those losses during the tournament because he was not worried about his weight all year, but instead was lifting and feeling stronger. Of course not everyone is a D1 wrestling prospect, but still an interesting case study.
Good luck to your son this year.

Great job John Herron and Jake Weimer! You guys are winners on and off the mat.
Awesome story...thank you for sharing. It makes the wrestling community proud to see a program full of classy coaches and wrestlers.

For what it's worth he is ranked 5th at 182 in New Castle semi state rankings that came out yesterday.
Is he back? I thought he wasn't wrestling this season.
-
Bailey is very tough, no doubt. I was extremelyimpressed with him last year when I saw him at New Castle semi state. I had him as my favorite to win state last year, but he didn't seem to unleash his offense at state the way he did at semi state.
I would be surprised if he finished his career without a state championship or two.
However, I think the next champ for the Irish is Rypel.
Good luck to the Irish.
Breyden Bailey has one high school loss thus far in his career (semi-final of the State Championships). He's gotta be something like 75-1 right now. And, he has done it through one of the more brutal schedules in the state (Traicoff, State Duals, etc). He's tireless. Sleeps in the wrestling room most nights. Focused. Feeling good about his chances to be the next champ for the Irish. He won't be outworked, that is for sure. Get 'em, Breyden.

What about Brandon James?
Didn't he beat Red when they weighed the same "lbs"?
I would say an unbiased look at the facts would say he IS the best pound for pound in the state. It is close between Nick Lee and CR but I would still give the edge to Chad. I think ontherise's point is that anyone wanting to prove themselves need to go to Red's weight class, not the other way around.

Great day for Swank. Nice job.
152
Jarod Swank #5 (Penn) over Marcus Miranda #13 (Avon) TF 16-1
Jarod Swank (Penn) over Brett Johnson #3 (Perry Meridian) Dec 6-4
Jarod Swank (Penn) over Dominic Herrick (Warren Central) Fall 3:40

I hope he gets well soon!
On the bright side, it is better to be sick during county tourney than state tourney.

Anyone know what time finals start?
Thanks

Any idea what time the finals will start?

Why?

Central Indiana wrestling is going to get stronger with Snyder at Brownsburg.
Plus many other strong coaches/programs on the rise to add to Warrens, PMs, LNs, New Pals, etc.
Pendoski at Carmel
Williams at Zionsville
Erett at Mooresville
Walpole at Southport
Lawrence Central,
Beech Grove, etc.
Sorry to go off on a tangent...back to the Edgewood Invite thread.
I can't help it but this Brownsburg team is a team to be reconed with. Top to bottom, Bottom to top, they are very solid and very young.
-
True...true...
Kinda hard to not slant towards PM given their successes.
At any rate- good luck to your son this year. He is a tough dude and I really enjoyed watching him last year.

Bluemonster- Howard Cottey, Roncalli graduate of the year 1989, father of 4 children 2 of whom wrestle. I also enjoy off track betting in the Hymalians!
Zach did an outstanding job so it is great to have someone else who really knows their stuff doing the rankings. Rest assured Mr. Chastain, Mr. Cottey is more than qualified to handle NC semi-state rankings.
Btw- I have heard stories of the infamous 1989 Roncalli Rebel Indianapolis City Championship team coached by Hall of Famer Wiley Craft and Tony Young and led by Howard "Howie" Cottey and Matt Hickey on the mat! Go Rebels! (and Falcons too... I guess...)

Crume is SOLID....National Champ potential. Great varsity addition to a solid lineup including Kieffer Bros.
Coach Warthan has got Uindy program rolling. I am looking forward to watching them this year. Go Hounds.
Nick Crume is the 133 lber for UIndy.

I don't think Brickens will be wrestling yet. I noticed he is running back for an outstanding New Pal football team that plays Columbus East Friday 11/21 for semi state championship.
Yorktown also had an excellent football team that made a good playoff run so their football playing wrestlers might not be up to speed/wrestling shape by this tourney.
Still some other great match ups you have mentioned.
Yorktown? New Pal? New Albany?
Wow, sounds like Mt.Vernon will be the place to be Thanksgiving weekend. Should be some good potential state level match-ups...
Why did Central drop out? They've been in it for years and some of there guys would've added to the good possibility matchups...
What are some we could see???
Konrath-White?
McCormick-Bethel-Timberman?
Castleberry-Stephenson?
Lynch-Brickens?
Looks like I may head on down to MV that weekend.

Best headlock I've witnessed personally: Finals match between McKinley and Kiefer a couple years ago. BOOM!
I missed this match (which is fine because I was rooting for the Rebels) but I heard about the throw. Those were two tough dudes battling it out 4? Or 5? times that year.
I ran into McKinley a while back and he looked like a shorter version of Brock Lesnar.
Good luck to McKinley and Kiefer this year at Cleveland State and Uindy.

Hate to hear this. Hope he is ok.
