  1. sarah and fozo have had some classic battles......can she still take him?......that's coin toss........i guess we'll all see 1 week from today......
  2. I agree that the Memeorial - Goshen matches for the forseeable next few years should be awesome. This was a very close match that could have easily swung the other way because of some extremely competitive matches. I'm sure the Goshen coach is a fine man outside the mat, but on the mat he leaves a little to be desired from the standpoint of how he acts towards the officials and the other wrestlers. I have seen him many times turn his back on the other teams wretslers when they come in to shake his hand. And his antics are not what I would want my sons to think is the proper way to act. Seriously, if things don't go his way, he goes nuts at times. Is he a good wrestling coach - he must be to have had the success he has had at Goshen. No one can dispute that. Did memorial shift the lineup first? Yes they did. I'm not saying that it's wrong to do that - it's what makes the difference sometimes in close matches. All I said was that what Pickard did didn't work out for him, but what Seltzer did, worked to a tee. can't wait for next years dual! i just wish they would move it to the end of the season like it ended up last year (which was becasue the original date got cancelled becasue of snow). Makes for a great end to the conference schedule.
  3. neither team is as strong as last year for sure....memorial is very young....2 seniors, 4 juniors and 8 sophmores......but they have alot of talent and will only get better over the next couple of years.....last year was a BIG deal for sure....i think memorial would have won 10 out of 10 times last year....we just flat out had a better team head to head.....this year though is a different story......this match was alot closer than the score indicated......memorial pulled off some big wins in clsoe match ups......but last year is over so that makes this year the bigger deal.....lol.......
  4. correction....we had 8 wins with 6 pins.....where did you go to school at jimmie?......let me guess....jimtown and then southwestern michigan?......musta been spending to much time partyin' and not working on your counting skills.......lol...... and the other big part of this is that goshen had 6 wins and only 1 pin......our guys that lost did a good job at staying off their backs......nick did a good job against # 9 ranked ntende.....never got put on his back and managed to keep it close......he told me afterwards that ntende is one strong young man though......very physical......
  5. ok....so IF this is the lineup, who are your picks at te winners?
  6. cowards?......i don't think so......it turns them into very confident young men......ones that are not afraid to step out in front of others and face possible defeat.....the ones that quit are not necessarily cowards either......like what has been said on here, there are many different reasons that a kid might give it up......i don't think it's often because of being a coward........
  7. moved stevens to 160 and pickard to 171 hoping to get an advantage but ended up losing 3 points.....
  8. Elkhart Memorial does it again beating up on Goshen 42-23. Another very intense match as always. The Goshen head coach once again tried to sway things in his direction by making less than well thought out line up changes that did him absolutely no good. I also must add that I have never seen a coach throw fits like the Goshen head coach does. Very immature to say the least.
  9. i agree that by not giving up the 5-6 point matches will be huge in determining who wins this one.....and on the flip side, getting those 5-6 point victories will make the difference.....
  10. I'm really looking forward to watching this one.......there are number of ranked wrestlers on both teams and most of the rest that aren't, are pretty darn good kids......my money goes on Penn this year......
  11. without a doubt (well, in my opinion anyway) penn will wrestle their best guys at the mishawaka dual next week......and personally i think penn will take down the mighty cavemen.....
  12. i think penn and jimtown have the most muscle at this point......and it also depends on which team penn brings since they have 2 varsity teams and 3 jv teams!.....man it must be nice for coach harper to have that many choices......but he deserves it.....he runs one heck of a program all the way from the little kids up thru his high school team.....and watch out for the host elkhart memorial team.....although they are young they have a decent team that is getting better every day......
  13. i think all of you guys that are arguing and puting each other down should have a wrestle off to see who gets to claim the title of king of the ***potty mouth*** talkers.....
  14. very well put.....and in my opinion, most really won't do what it takes even though they think they are.......
  15. i totally agree with the dropping weight issue......so many kids feel to much pressure to make weight that it affects their school work, social life and general peace of mind.....they end up hating wrestling cause they can never eat....especially thru the holidays......to many coaches put unrealistic goals on kids maintaining a weight that is really to low for them......that also affects their health which makes them feel bad and then it's no fun anymore.....sure you have the rare breed who loves it no matter what and has the mind set of a tank, but 99% of the kids are not that and will end their wrestling days when high school ends for them.....so whats the use in being miserable when high school is supposed to be fun?......as with any activity, it has to be somewhat enjoyable to keep teenagers interested......i know of a number of kids over the last few years that quit for this very reason....we all understand the thought behind getting as low as you can so you're the "bigger stronger" guy at that weight class, but are you?......did you lose so much weight (and alot of that is muscle), that you're no longer the stronger guy?.....wouldn't it be great if everyone just wrestled their regular weight?.....no cutting at all?.....i know that could never happen but how many more kids would stay out?......would it make a difference?......
  16. having just the top 2 would definitely be prestigious......but.......it would also draw the least amount of fans, parents and those college coaches.....and more than likely, you will get very few 1 vs 2 match ups because of fall sports, afforability for kids to travel (assuming the cost of this would fall on the kid/parents), etc........so rather than have just 28 kids, most of whom will be your "preseason ranked" 1 thru 4 or 5 lets say, invite 4 to 8 kids per weight group.......this will draw far more in attendence and basically be a preseason state finals type of show.......now that would draw a crowd and make for some interesting discussions once the real season winds down and we see who really makes it through the meat grinders and goes to indy......
  17. y2cj41 says if you're not the champ, you're nothing..........are you serious?.......hello, is anyone home up there?........so all of these kids over the years that weren't the state champion were nothing?.......is that what you teach?......maybe we should change your name to ricky bobby and your motto can be "if ya ain't first, yer last"......i know of many many kids who didn't become state champion that are winners all the way.......great kids that are way more than "nothings"......i'm all about winning and pushing my kids to go for broke and lay it on the line to be the winner......but when they lose, i would never tell them that they are now nothing......and that all of their hard work was for nothing.......what kind of messaage would that be?......................................
  18. without a doubt, the individual format should stay as it is......crowning a "true" state champion is the best way to go.......but from a team standpoint, i feel it would greatly benefit the sport of wrestling to do the team format in a classed system......the exposure that will get added to alot of different schools, big and small alike, is invaluable in promoting and growing our sport.....it will help build traditions for many schools that cannot get there as it is now.......look what it does for football........it can and would be the same for wrestling......
  19. anyone have the results of the hyway state tournament last wekend?
  20. only one other person on here even mentioned the huge gap between 215 and 285......i know it's to late now to add one in but i would leave everything from 103 thru 171 where it is now and then go 185, 205, 230 and then 275.....that adds a weight class but cuts down the 70 lb difference that we now have at the top.....most of the 285er's i saw this year had more than enough "extra" on them that they could cut to 275....alot of the kids in the low and mid range weights were ripped to the bone to make weight so the big boys could do it too.....and this gives another kid the opportunity to wrestle.....
  21. you need to get with your kids coach and have all the coaches in the conferenece get together and set their tournaments on a different weekend.....that's what ours did....our conference finals are the next weekend....
  22. "nutritional weight loss" is actually very simple......eat good healthy foods, about 6 smaller sized meals per day and have a good cardio regimin in place......and you will stay lean and healthy......some will have to work a little harder at it than others but that will in 98% of the cases keep you in a "lean" state......super ripped with 3% bodyfat?.....maybe not that but it will put in a position to achieve that type of condition.....just remember that very low body fats are not good for extended periods of time....that is the "issue" with cutting weight for wrestling.....i'm sure we all wish no one would do it and everyone would just wrestle at their "normal" body weight.....never gonna happen.....so.....if you're going to cut weight, be sensible about it.....start early in the pre season getting your eating schedule on track with natural foods and smaller portions.....this will get you to the point where you can be lean and mean......without the last minute drastic overnight "i gotta lose 5 pounds" situations......both of my boys do this and stay very close to their weight all the time.....it's a little bit of work but well worth it in the end.....and best of all......IT'S HEALTHY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  23. wow......quite the conversation.......i think you guys should kiss and make up......no sense in being mad about someone elses opinion......but just to throw my 2 cents in......one fact you cannot push aside......the big schools have many more kids to choose from........penn (for instance) gets 100+ kids going out for wrestling.....they normally send 2-3 jv teams out to different tournaments on a given weekend.....their feeder middle schools even send out multiple teams....after watching their jv team this past winter, i know for a fact they could beat alot of other schools varsity line ups.......a small school would be lucky to get 20 total kids out for wrestling.......and most of the time cannot fill all the weight classes......so from a TEAM standpoint, i do feel the big schools will almost always have the advantage.....individually?.....well then wrestling becomes a one on one sport so school size becomes much less a factor.....where it does help the "big school" kid is from a competition standpoint.....better and more kids to wrestle just to make the team and more often than not, better schools on the schedule......
  24. it amazes me people complain about weigh ins like this.....you know what the weight classes are before you ever get there.....if your kid is that close then maybe you need to just let him wrestle up and not sweat the weight issue......especially the little kids!......and if little johnny needs to go pee pee or poopy, get him in the bathroom before he gets to the weigh in room....isn't this all just common sense?......i've been doing this alot of years with my boys and the weight thing is really ridiculous with alot of parents.....i've seen 5-6-7 year old kids that are 40 to 50 pound range running to cut a few ounces!......come on people, is it really that important?.....at these young ages that should never be done......the weight doesn't make any difference at this stage.....if your kid is in good shape, he should just wrestle his weight.....if he's overweight, then hopefully particpating in wrestling has helped him lose some excess and become healthier......think people!
