  1. A USA Wrestling or ISWA card is not needed for any USGWA events. Yes, you can register at the door and most usually do for these events. See you Sunday!!
  2. First Women's tournament of the year coming up on Jan. 22nd at Yorktown HS. The USGWA Indiana, check out the tourney entry form here: http://www.usgwa.com/events/pdf/in10.pdf Also, for those HS wrestlers entering this event, you will need a waiver signed. This is due to the tourney being during the HS season. Find the waiver form here: http://www.ihsaa.org/dnn/LinkClick.aspx?fileticket=emjs2ILHBl0%3D&tabid=587 Hope to see you all there!!!
  3. Modified for the 2013 Season: Team IN Women's events are growing and a group is going to several events throughout the country in 2013. Please fill out the form and let me know what you are interested in. Trip Costs will be determined by the number going, travel, event, etc. We had great trips to OKC and Fargo last year. Also, a great women's camp, let's keep it going in 2013!!! Any questions, please let me know. Thanks!! Darren Strub, ISWA Women's Director, iswawmnsdirector@aol.com, 513-375-4903 http://www.emailmeform.com/builder/form/OrJQ1hRfdmKdne0Y28fWEL
  4. Demi Strub (Oklahoma City University) and Sarah Hildebrandt (King College) will both be wrestling for their teams this Sunday at OKC. The matches will be shown live streaming at OCUSPORTS.COM This is the 2nd duals for OCU - Demi went 2-1 the first weekend of the season. For King this is their season opener. These duals have the top 4 ranked teams in the nation: OCU, King, Cumberlands, and Simon Frasier.
  5. I have been informed that the Ohio Tournament of Champions is considering adding a Women's Division in 2012. The tournament is set for April 21st 2012. This is a Modified Folkstyle tournament in Columbus, OH. This is a great tournament and having a women's division will make for great competition for women nationally between the USAW and USGWA nationals in March and the Body Bar tournament in May. The question is will there be enough support for adding the division. The tournament director would like strong numbers for a HS division that MS women can participate in. I suggested to include ES women and he was concerned with the turnout, since the Ohio TofC pre-orders high-quality trophies that are year specific. The TofC awards these to the top 6 participants. I suggested to only 4 top placers for the women. Let me know what you think and please vote in the poll. Thanks!! Darren Strub ISWA Women's Director
  6. All pics up to date for Fargo this year. I am working with others that were there to get more pics. Thanks!!
  7. We keep working on building a strong women's program at one location. The issue is that the women wrestling are spread out all over the state. I'll be working on getting MS and HS coaches more interested in women's wrestling this year. As of now, the best avenue is to find a club or MS/HS program that is very accepting of women's wrestling. Some examples from all of the state include: Hoosier Elite, East Central, Penn, Jeffersonville, Yorktown, Connersville, and Southmont. There are many women's tourneys and camps from January-July to attend in the area. Get the word out and any girl / young lady that wants to wrestle, I can find them a place that is open for them in their area. Thanks!! Darren Strub, ISWA Women's Director
  8. We have a real good group of 5 women going this year to Fargo. All have several years experience. I have listed them all here with their division and weight at Fargo. I have also included their most recent national wrestling accomplishments. Remember to check 'Team Indiana Girls Wrestling' on Facebook for daily picture uploads and comments. Listed in Alphabetical Order: Brooke Bunch Cadet Women 101 1st Women's tourney after a very successful MS career at Connersville. Sarah Hildebrandt Junior Women 117 2010 2nd @ 116 Junior Nationals 2010 5th @ 51 KG Sunkist Open 2010 1st @ 52 KG Fila Cadet Kayla Miracle Junior Women 105, Cadet Women 108 2011 1st @ 52 KG Guelph Canada Open 2011 1st @ 108 Fila Cadet 2011 1st @ 108 Cadet Folkstyle 2011 1st @ 105 Junior Folkstyle Gibby Paxton Junior Women 112 2011 4th @ 112 USGWA Folkstyle Demi Strub Junior Women 148 2011 2nd @ 67 KG Junior Pan-Ams in Brazil 2010 2nd @ 146 Junior Nationals 2011 2nd @ 67 KG Fila Junior 2011 1st @ 148 Junior Folkstyle
  9. For HS, I know that I am in no way interested in a whole women's program for wrestling all at once. It would be a simple process that would all be based on how many women join in. Getting coaches from around the state to actively recruit (as much as the guys) to a program that is just for the women. A coach can easily put together a schedule of several tournaments and end the season with a national tournament. All of these events are currently being held every year now! The next step would be for these coaches that have these small teams to talk with other coaches and schedule women's matches or mini tourneys along side of current team events and to make one of the existing state tournaments their 'state'. Again based on numbers, more tourneys and a simple regional-state could be implemented. As with other states like Oregon the numbers have increased year over year and have come to the point of the state association sanctioning women's wrestling and requiring ALL women to wrestle only other women. Having good numbers and women only wrestling/practicing with other women will satisfy most. For College, (which is what this discussion is about) I agree that having more women's program will only help with having more or keeping men's programs. I'm not sure what is wrong with encouraging every man or women to wrestle if they wish. If a college is willing to add a women's program, then the likelihood of losing that men's program to Title IX is very unlikely anytime soon. You can blame Title IX for some of the issues for losing men's programs, but it can also be used to save them.
  10. Without women's wrestling in HS in Indiana, awood1 you are not able to see what we could produce here. Especially in the higher weights!! Most girls don't stick with wrestling in HS because they simply get beat up wrestling the heavier and stronger guys and cannot grow into the sport. California has HS women's wrestling and having a young lady be 38-0 is not only great, but likely. We have many young men reach that level every year in Indiana. For close to home, look no further than our current star Kayla Miracle. We also have stars that just graduated - Sarah Hildebrandt and Demi Strub. If IN had HS women's wrestling, all three of these women would have gone undefeated this year!! Getting HS women's wrestling is the key here. As I said earlier, the more women wrestling in HS, the more college programs there will be. Even dare I say, a D1 women's wrestling program. All of this will help men's wrestling as a by-product!!
  11. I would expect East Central to have one girl wrestler this year and I know South Dearborn, Connersville, and Franklin County will have at least one on their HS teams this coming season. I believe that the IHSAA would have something to say here. HS wrestling is in need of more numbers and having more girls wrestlers will only help, especially in IN since they do not keep track of how many women wrestle. The issue with Title IX has been going on for quite awhile. Getting the budgets worked out with the college programs is something that teams need to investigate. Not one college women's wrestling program gives a full athletic scholarship to their wrestlers. But whenever a program starts, the team is filled very quickly with women from all over the country. I am not saying this is the one and only fix for this issue, but having a women's teams will help even out these numbers. Women wrestlers want more opportunities at the top and will go across the country and pay for their education to be on a women's team. HS women's teams across the country will be the key to progressing women's wrestling. The more women's team the less of a strain Title IX will have on the men's programs. Darren Strub, ISWA Women's Director
  12. Great turnout at camp this year!! All Indiana women attending. 14. This summer at the Cadet & Junior Nationals (Fargo), Indiana will have their best team ever attending. We have three of the best women ever from Indiana wrestling at the same event: Sarah Hildebrandt, Demi Strub, and Kayla Miracle. All three have national titles and all are expected to be on top of the podium this summer. This strong core will support a strong women's team for the Junior duals that are returning to Fargo again this year. We have two more already committed to attending this summer and need several more for a strong team to compete for Team Indiana. Women that are Cadet age and are in High School will be able to participate in three events at Fargo. All HS women will be able to participate in the Women's Junior Nationals and Junior Duals. Contact the women on your teams, coaches, and club representatives to let the women wrestlers of Indiana know of this great opportunity. Contact can be made here or email- iswawmnsdirector@aol.com, Facebook-Team Indiana Girls Wrestling, and at iswa.com To prep for the event, there is the ISWA Women's State, Central Regionals Girls Festival, ISWA Women's Camp in June, and several days of training at Fargo before the event. Reply back with some names and schools of who would be interested and we will contact them and explain this great chance for them to be a part of the best IN women's team ever!!

  16. Demi Strub won the national championship at 148 lbs. in the Junior Division at Oklahoma City on Saturday, March 26th. She won the bracket the hard way by defeating the 2nd, 3rd, and 5th place finishers. Demi wrestled great at what will be her new home for the next four year at Oklahoma City University. Also, many congrats to Cadet/Junior champ Kayla Miracle and Division 1 champ Hope Miracle. Demi Allen also wrestled at the event and placed third in an extremely tough division 2 class. 18. I believe the question is do we allow for the current status quo or do 'WE' do something about this? What I mean by 'WE', I mean each and every one of us involved in wrestling. Supporting women's wrestling is the key. Even encouraging more girls to wrestle will change the landscape. If this issue is just ignored as it is now, until a really good lightweight girl wrestler makes strides into State tournaments, this will remain just a talking point only for a couple weeks of the year. Boys and girls wrestle each other all the time at all levels of wrestling. With support from all levels, women wrestling only women could be implemented and successful in just a three years. I am very excited about the coming prospect of Kayla making it to state in one of her next three years, probably next year!! But all of her work, skill, and talent does not make any strides for women's wrestling. It shows that women can make it in the lightest weight classes. This does nothing for the vast number of women that work just as hard, but are unable to break JV because they do not have a small build and are not in the lightest weight classes. Our heavier women Olympic team members are not able to succeed at the HS Varsity level, simply because of the body build difference between boys and girls. With more support from coaches, administrators, parents, etc., we could have groups of girls working out alongside the guys on the wrestling teams. With these groups, we would have practice partners and the ability to have small add-on meets and mini-tourneys with just the women. The IHSAA does not recognize women's wrestling and does not even track the number of women in our HS programs. Adding to the total number of wrestlers across the state of IN will help our sport overall for boys and girls. In my talks with parents, there are so many girls that would like to wrestle, but they simply do not want to wrestle boys. The parents don't want them to wrestle boys. Many parents with boys wrestling don't want their girls to wrestle because they know how physical the sport is. I have been in communication with everyone that I can find the last couple years to gain support for women's wrestling. I sent out emails to every coach and AD in the state and letters to every women wrestler that has registered, and receive only minimal feedback. The change will occur when the system changed as in states like Tennessee, Washington, and Hawaii. All similar in population to IN, but they have taken the proactive step to organize and recognize women's wrestling without the numbers. When this plan is implemented, the numbers grow every year and teams of women form within a couple years. This can occur in IN with or without the support of the IHSAA, it is up to all of us. This Sunday is the United States Girls Wrestling Assocation's (USGWA) state tournament in Indiana at Yorktown HS. Trent McCormick is a strong supporter of women's wrestling and was happy for his club to support this tournament. Trust me there are always other tournaments to go to, but this and a couple others are the best opportunity for all of our GS-HS Girl Wrestlers to show their skill against women from several surrounding states! Support our girls by attending the tournament and telling those girls involved in wrestling to attend girls only events. Darren Strub, ISWA Women's Director
  19. East Central earned their spot by winning their 10 team sectional tournament. The team has been really hit hard with sickness. Varsity 103, 215, & 285 all have been sick this week. Tonight 7 were Varsity with 3 JV. 2 of the 3 wins for EC on the night were from JV wrestlers. The question is do we put the wrestlers that have a great chance this weekend at Semi-State out there for a tiny chance to win at team regionals? Not to mention, how well did CE do against Roncalli in the next round? CE scored one more team point against Roncalli after easily beating NC. Obviously you have not seen EC wrestle before as far as having fun? The remainder of the team came to support the team. What kills team state is the structure of the tournament, weather delays, and the simple fact that most teams that qualify need to choose to save their wrestlers for the individual tournament.
  20. I have received great feedback to the tournament. There will be a great turnout! Pre-register online or mail in your registration form by Feb. 12th. http://www.usgwa.com/events/info.php?file=in8
