Throwing weight around
Cavemen assert superiority in a victory over Penn
MISHAWAKA -- An argument could be made that Penn High School's wrestling team has improved so much, it is now the second-best mat squad in the Tribune area.
Really, only a couple other teams would take issue with that.
But no matter where the Kingsmen rank, there is no question about which team is No. 1.
Mishawaka's defending state champion Cavemen won 10 out of 14 weight classes and extended their win streak over the Kingsmen to 10 years with a 48-18 victory Thursday night.
Back-to-back falls by Christian Lentz at 215 and Travis Thomas at heavyweight blew open a close match and put Mishawaka on a road toward its 11th consecutive Northern Indiana Conference championship. In all, Mishawaka collected six pins before a packed house at its home gym. And yet, this was no repeat of last year's dominating shutout.
Penn drew first blood, and a third of the way through the contest, the score was tied 9-9. Spectators commented almost as much about Penn's improvement as they did about Mishawaka's pending victory.
"I'm not satisfied, because we came in here to win," said Penn coach Brad Harper. "But I'm 100 percent satisfied with our effort."
Penn's Pat Davenport got his team off to a good start by pinning Alex White in the opening bout at 145. And Joe Miller scored a late takedown in topping Mishawaka's Joey Smith, 10-6, at 171.
Mishawaka took control after the 189-pound weight class, just after Dustin Boyd scored a 6-1 victory against Penn's Jeff Veal.At 215, Lentz pancaked David Reagan in 3:15, and at heavyweight, Thomas -- who just gained his varsity spot the day before -- stuck Charles Romine in 1:51. That pushed the Cavemen to a commanding 24-9 advantage.
"Travis beat (previous heavyweight) Darius Cooley in a challenge match," said Mishawaka coach Darrick Snyder. "We're fortunate because I believe we have two heavyweights who are capable of getting to the state finals. But, unfortunately, there is only one spot."
Taylor Wisler's 7-0 victory over Penn's Mike Witous at 103 and Paul Beck's fall at 112 increased the Mishawaka lead to 33-9.
And then, in the feature match of the night, Matt Guerra's 6-2 decision against Cory Hildebrandt mathematically sealed the deal for the Cavemen.Guerra got the initial takedown, and then scored a huge three-point nearfall in the third period.
"Penn came in here and wrestled tough," said Snyder. "And truthfully, I don't know that we wrestled our best. But our guys showed a lot of heart."
At least five Cavemen wrestled through injury, including three-time individual state champ Josh Harper, who moved up to 130 pounds and wore a shoulder harness.
The Cavemen will have no time to celebrate their victory. This evening, they are scheduled to travel to Lowell, Mich., for a match against one of Michigan's best teams.
"After tomorrow, we have to give the guys a breather," said Snyder. "If there's another team in the state with a tougher schedule than ours, someone show it to me."MISHAWAKA 48, PENN 18
