  1. This one is over my head...not sure what your getting at
  2. We have it covered. Thanks for your concern.
  3. Having better practice partners is an advantage. Small school kids can also have good practice partners. It's not like our good kids are just sitting and wrestling Adam dummies the whole practice. Our better kids often times will comeback in and help coach or we go out and try to find coaches to wrestle with our better kids. The whole better practice partner argument does hold water for sure but it isn't like you can't do anything about it.
  4. I don't get what your arguing here... what is the point of even having a classed tournament then, or even any concept of team wrestling. The goal of the Class A tournament is to find the best small school team. Penn is not a small school, Penn's JV would not be considered part of a small school. In what world would Penn's JV be considered for the small competition? I guess if the "Class A Division" were actually the "Class A and Big School JV Division" your point would have some validity. There are a lot of teams that could win the Class A state title, that's the point of classing it.
  5. No. That's also not what any kid who I have ever coached who made it to state had to deal with either. I would work on your practice schedule I guess.
  6. Penn has 4000 people to choose from. Churubusco has 400. 4000 is more than 400. In trying to put together a team of 14 Penn is much more likely to have 14 good wrestlers. On the individual side let's say that 1 in 400 people have the attributes needed to make it to state, it will make the math easier. If that is the case then Penn should have 10 kids who could go to state, Churubusco would have 1. I am saying that the 1 Churubusco kid is not at a disadvantage.
  7. I almost put something about it being a relay making the situation different in my original post, I wish I would have now. Anyhow as I said in my last post relay teams are at a disadvantage. Track would be more fair if the team portion and the relays were classed.
  8. I honestly don't see why a person from Churubusco who runs 49.5 second 400 deserves more recognition than a kid from Penn who runs a 49.4 second 400. The faster person won, the school size doesn't matter. Now if your referring to the fact that your relay team was at a disadvantage I could completely buy that. Culver is at a disadvantage to Penn when it comes to producing a team of good 400 runners. That is an interesting grey area. If wrestling had a tag team, or summer slam style 5 man teams I think I would agree that portion should be classed. As far as why we compete in class 1 a for the team state duals, it is because we are at a disadvantage when it comes to producing 14 kids compared to larger school, thus the need for the team portion to be classed.
  9. The team aspect is completely different than the individual tournament. The team portion needs classed because schools with less kids are at a disadvantage when facing school with more kids, thus we need a team tournament. Individuals on the on other hand are just that, one person. Any one person from any singular school can be good. They are not at a disadvantage based on school size because they are one person. They do not need 14 people to be succesful. as far as the Penn thing goes, we are finding out the best varsity team in the state. We define varsity teams based on schools, so since Penn's JV is not their varsity they do not get the recognition that Varsity trams do.
  10. Why would kids from your school deserve more recognition than kids with similar times that go to big schools? Did they work harder or something? I have no clue why your kids deserve any more recognition than big school kids who also ran very impressive times. How did they achieve anything that the other kids didn't?
  11. I have had a few coaches contact me about the process of nominating wrestlers for the mental attitude award. I don't really know what is involved in nominating someone. Anyone on here have any insight into the nomination process?
  12. I don't know after seeing the video I wouldn't call it a cartwheel... maybe more of an aerial- which I just found out when I looked up cartwheel with no hands.
  13. What would be the argument for classes in track and in cross country? Bigger schools get to practice on better surfaces? Proximity to Dick's Sporting Goods allows larger schools a better opportunity to purchase top of the line track shoes. What disadvantages are faced by the small school kids in track or CC? Ill bet he was kicking himself in the butt for having a quitters mentality when you guys beat the adversity holding your athletes back and won two state titles in the last five years.
  14. I am curious is this an argument in track, swimming, golf or any of the other individual sports? It would be interesting to see how other sports feel about this issue. Also as a small school coach I have been wondering this. When my guys loose at sectionals, regionals, semi-state, state, where ever, am I supposed to feel that they were somehow cheated by the system? Currently I just tend to think when my guys get knocked out that they simply need to get better if they want to make it further in the tournament.i Is the better option to tell them that they need to work harder, but also that they are getting screwed over by the set-up of our tournament? I can tell you we had two kids go to semi-state, both lost. I thought a lot about why they lost, the quality of their opponents, their ability to step up to the occasion, their skill level, I even thought about how difficult our state tournament is. I never once thought to myself, man if these guys just went to a bigger school they would be state qualifiers. If our school wasn't so small these two would have made it for sure, I guess I just don't understand the mentality behind classing an individual sport.
  15. Thanks I didn't get a real good look at it, I was kind of half watching a few matches and saw his feet go over his head, and heard the crowed ohhing and ahhhing so I assumed that is what he had done. Either way it was cool.
  16. I thought for sure someone would start a topic on him, but I guess I will do it. I was really impressed by him on Saturday. I thought he was very dominant in winning a very tough weight, he was really fun to watch as well. In the quarters he hit what I would call a "flying squirrel", I am surprised that takedown doesn't have its own thread, anyone got a video of it? Anyone get a better angle on it? That is what it looked like to me. Also no a complaint just curious with his ranking, he is currently 14th, and it seems that he was a little bit low all year long. Not just based on Saturday but on his past. Doesn't he only have like two losses or something in high school? I am pretty sure he has had quite a bit of bad luck when it comes sectional time in the past. Anyhow this kid really impressed me I think he could make a lot of noise down at Banker's Life.
  17. Ok first off I wasn't trying to hijack anything. I made a quick little joke and you guys freaked out about it. It's really awesome that four NHC guys made it to state at the same weight.Secondly I don't see the need to take pot shots at my guys. This was the worst team that we had in seven years. Your school has 2500 kids we have 400. It would only make sense that only 2 or 3 of our kids would be varsity at Carroll. You also gave me one big school that we can't compete with- I know there are plenty of others but you guys are a top ten team in the state, we compete just fine with plenty of big schools. We finished second in the sectional and regional two years ago, and there was one big school that beat us. Congrats you have a great program. In the end it's not like Carroll kids and Churubusco kids have different DNA you guys just have about 5 times as many kids to choose from so it makes sense that you will have more good kids.
  18. You are completely missing the point in what I was saying. My comment had nothing at all to do with Bellmont's strength of schedule, or their program. I actually really respect Bellmont and unless they are wrestling us I am always rooting for the Bellmont kids. My comment was actually comparing the reasons for the end of the NHC, to class wrestling, but it seems like it was a little over your head, so let me simplify it for you. 1. Y2CJ41 is for class wrestling 2. I am against it. 3. By all accounts Carroll and Homestead were kicked out of the NHC because they had become too big/ powerful for the other NHC teams to compete against in all sports. This is similar to the argument for class wrestling. 4. By Y2's comments it seemed that he felt that the NHC kicking Homestead and Carrol out was unneeded. This seemed to be at odds with Y2's stance on class wrestling. 5. I used Norwell and Bellmont as the example because they are the smallest schools in the NHC. 6. I sarcastically said that Bellmont and Norwell should just work harder because that is what Y2 always says to those who argue class wrestling against him. It also works for what I am trying to say because Bellmont has way more NHC titles than Carroll. Ironically wrestling was one of the sports in the NHC that was not dominated by Carroll and Homestead. So the comment was a sarcastic way to poke a little fun at Y2. The comment had nothing to do with Bellmont other than the fact that they are a smaller school in the NHC. I have read that something like 10% of the population can't understand sarcasm though so sorry if I confused you.
  19. I am not saying we would bump up if classing ever happened. I wish I had that much virtue, but honestly I don't. I would take the easier accolades, and I am sure that my team and staff would be all right with that. I honestly do not think that classing would kill the sport like I once did. I also don't think it would do anything to make wrestling in the state "better". It may add some kids at small schools I guess, but I don't believe that the easier path would cause the level of wrestling at small schools to improve. This season we had five kids on the team who went to camps, wrestled club and did the things currently needed to advance in the post season. Want to guess how many moved on in the post season? If we were classed those same kids and others who didn't put in the extra effort would be able to move on. The system we have now forces you to put in extra effort, if we classed you could get to a higher level without having to put in the extra effort. If that makes our sport better then I guess the is what we should shoot for. In the end I don't think the any small gain in numbers at small schools would be worth throwing away the strong tradition the our state has built. I have two kids wrestling tomorrow, if they make it, it's because they earned it under our current system. If they don't make it, it won't be a fault of the system they simple wouldn't qualify because they didn't earn it. I don't see a need to change our system because it is difficult.
  20. How do you explain small schools who have success, and have good numbers? Everyone always wants to paint the picture that classed wrestling is a cure all for small schools, I don't see that as being the case at all. If we classed I don't believe that we would see a dramatic change in the number of participants at certain schools, some schools will still have a good number of kids, some still wouldn't. All classing would do is make it easier to get to state; nothing more, nothing less. It would still be celebrated, and be a big deal, but I don't see it changing the level of small school wrestling as a whole all that much. On a separate note would we also have a separate class for schools with less then five kids, or should they count for this classification?
  21. Is Carr out at 220? That seems to be how the preview reads, if that is the case that is too bad, he is a very solid wrestler. Who is in if he is out? Also if he is out the brackets haven't changed on track.
  22. We have the Beast of Busco... The story starts in 1898, when a farmer named Oscar Fulk supposedly saw a giant turtle living in the seven-acre lake on his farm near Churubusco. He told others about it, but eventually he decided to leave it alone.[2] A half century later, in July 1948, two Churubusco citizens, Ora Blue and Charley Wilson, also reported seeing a huge turtle (weighing an estimated 500 pounds) while fishing on the same lake, which had come to be known as Fulk Lake. A farmer named Gale Harris owned the land at that time. Harris and others also reported seeing the creature. Word spread.[3] In early 1949, a UPI reporter from Fort Wayne sent the story out on the wire services, and the turtle became nationally famous.[4] Curious mobs of sightseers began to invade Harris’ land. Traffic got so bad that the state police had to be called in for traffic control.[5] People questioned the existence of the turtle. To vindicate his good name, Harris made several attempts to catch the beast, including draining the lake with the help of Orville Bright and Kenneth Leitch.[6] But "Oscar" (named after the original owner of the farm) was never captured.[7][8][9][10] In March 1949, an attempt to send a deep-sea diver into the pond failed when the wrong equipment was delivered to the Harris farm.[11] A photographer for Life Magazine, Mike Shea, took 299 photos at the site, but they were deemed unusable.[12] However, dozens of photos related to the history of the Beast are archived for viewing on the Web site of the Indianapolis Star. Cultural impact[edit]Oscar's memory lives on in Churubusco's Turtle Days festival held each June.[13] It includes a parade, carnival and turtle races.[14] A turtle shell labeled "Beast of Busco" hangs in the Two Brothers Restaurant in Decatur, Indiana. A small concrete statue of a turtle sits on the sidewalk at the main intersection in the center of Churubusco. That is cold man. We haven't been the same since I cut it though.
  23. Thanks! You guys are doing an awesome job of keeping everybody aware of the qualification process.
