  1. dpetty i disagree with you. first and foremost let me say that scott ellis and lance(lance is godfather to my son ) are very close friends or mine. the scott ellis state championship match of his was truly tremendous. it was a back and forth see saw match and scott did hit a few standing grambies but did not hit a gramby to a peterson for his win, as a matter of fact scott was on top and had to ride his opponent for about one second for the win. i have the match on tape and watch it a lot.this was another of the best matches i ever saw. scott ellis was an animal. period.
  2. wanting and doing are two different things. lots of kids want to win but are they willing to do what it takes to be a champion?
  3. why disagree? first and foremost a kid must have his family support 100% and second a coach that will get the most out of a kid and a little more, that is the push. im talking about a kid with the aspiration to be a state champion will be one who is willing to go the extra mile because he loves the sport and likes winning. im not talking bout kids who are pushed into the sport by family or peer pressure
  4. GOOD COACHES ARE SUPPOSED TO PUSH AND SO ARE PARENTS. NEVER BELIEVED IN THAT BURNOUT STUFF,YOU EITHER LOVE IT AND ARE IN IT TO WIN IT OR YOU DONT!
  5. cant leave out the one second duck from oliver richmond for the title, or how about deron phillips vs billy terry in the semi finals terry was whipping deron pretty good until deron hit his famous "chilly philly" on billy for the fall with very few seconds left in the match.
  6. couldnt have said it better myself.
  7. no love for cathedral? sean always rises to the occasion with his teams. go nephew Mike Venezia, and cousin vinny cosaro!
  8. sulialakusamo(bad spelling on my part) kid from LN in the eithties or early nineties called him goro.
  9. sorry to say one of the greatest C.Y.O. wrestling coaches in indpls passed away during the thanksgiving holiday. he was truly a great teacher and leader who produced many city titles and individual champions that were very good wrestlers at Little Flower . always preached technique and basics, and head up. he will be sorely missed.but always much loved.
  10. believe he was from muncie south BIG JOHN HENERY.
  11. pony. the white with the black stripe or the black with the white stripe, had both loved em still have em, all taped up at the side seams where they wore out. lol. i dont even know if they make them anymore.
  12. forgot to add Kevin Troy beating undefeated returning state champ and jr world ch David Locke of delta 7-1 at the greatest dual meet of the century cathedral vs delta 1984. Locke later on won the state that year with his only loss to Troy.
  13. wow you must be old because i saw it in grade school. lol. much better than vision quest.
  14. mike mcginley beating quinn whitney in 83-84 dual meet for his 100th win in the cathedral gym. whitney won the state over david irving of delta that year in a great match .and we used to say whitney was 31 and mcginley.lol
  15. dusted off some old vhs tapes and found takedown and settled down to watch it. i hadnt seen it since it came out . the main point here is that if you really watch some of the wrestling they are doing things like switches and reswitches, hip heists, standing up a few laterals a jap or two some legs, basic halves and cradles and just some good old fashioned basic wrestling. i believe this would be a good movie for young wrestlers to watch just because they keep up a flow of wrestling. on a side note has anyone ever noticed the kid that wrestled the star in the movie looks like a young tommy morrison former world heavyweight contender?
  16. one of the best from hobart was david yager state champion in 84
  17. well scott ellis was an animal as was duncan ,a true neanderthal, as far as the better resume, duncan was undefeated state champ(138) most valuable wrestler of state tourney in 83(third his junior year) however scott won it as a sophomore at 105, third as a junior and wrestled out of state his senior year. scott probably has the better resume as he was tremendous in both freestyle and greco and wrestled internationally as duncan didnt do much off season wrestling while scott was at and winning most every tourney around.
  18. dont forget scott ellis and darren duncan(most valuable wrestler in 1983) from warren central. truly baaaaaad men.
  19. wow that is an awsome site i met coach ellis when i was wrestling at cathedral, great guy, also knew marty rorhman as his son nick wrestled with us at cathedral(marty is now deceased)coach grundy is truly a heck of a guy and a great friend. Quick question(im sure indiana wrestlingguy will come to his defense) ..where is lance rhodes name on the list of arlington greats ?he always told us he was a STATE CHAMP so wheres the beef?or as he would state "its a misprint" lol.good luck golden knights its great to see the arlington program moving up and on towards greatness.
  20. not a pissing contest and there is no doubt they are, were great wrestlers of their times. sure have noticed jason, hes a bad motor scooter, not in the same class as either ellis. i would not want to have either of them answer for themselves as you are correct they are both very classy guys. just asked a simple question about a great matchup of different era wrestlers. not comparing apples to oranges and not wanting to upset you coach watkins as i have much respect for you and you accomplishments.
  21. different era, different styles of wrestling. who wins this match? im going with Ellis he could do it all shots ,throws, and had absolutley no fear of anyone and tremendous confidence in himself. as a former ass. coach of Lance his full four yrs at C.H.S with a load of talent for workout partners i would bet the farm on him. if Tsirtsis got in on a shot he had better finish immediatly or he would be launched with his feet in the air the same as if he tied up with him (god forbid). not taking anything away from alex(how could you he was a tremendous wrestler in his own right) but Ellis would eat him alive and im pretty sure his state champion brother Scott would physically beat Tsirtsis up as he was one tough S.O.B. any feedback?
  22. still going with venezia he was bred for wrestling has had tremendous coaching his whole life and has a great attitude and work ethic. his uncle frank a state champ his dad a runner up and uncles that werent too bad.
  23. im going with my nephew michael venezia.
  24. i am great friend with the mcginley family but was appalled at the photos i asked sean about this and he had no comment. i have coached many of cathedral wrestlers when they were younger but to do that stuff at the state tournament melts no ice with me. i am an alumni and they dont mind asking for donations why would i donate to those type of actions. i am in no way putting down the mcginleys(one is godfather to my son) lance ellis is godfather to my other son. i just find those photos an embarrassment to cathedral high school and i have no problen talking about the situation to anyone anytime.i also believe that some type of action should be taken.they never swept anything under the rug when rhodes was there and i personally dislike him but ther e is no way he or the parents would have put up with those actions.post my name post anything you want those photos are an embarrassment to cathedral and the people who built that program up and yes i was one of them. im not mad at the mcginleys(saw him last night and asked him bout the photos) im sure sean didnt tell them to do that but surley it could have been avoided
  25. as a former wrestler and cathedral grad i found it disgusting and embarrassing that state runner up Brandon Wright, state runner up John Grey and 5th placer Calvin Sullivan showed their middle fingers on their cardboards while on the podium. my feelings are such that they have disgraced Cathedral high school and so far nothing has been done about it. if we had done that there had better of been a doctor in the house as our parents and coaches wouldnt have stood for it and we would have been expelled. i have seen the photos and there are no excuses for this disrespectful performance. i am embarrassed for MYSELF, CATHEDRAL and feel sorry for those with those photos. we worked hard building up that program and now this stuff is happening. i believe the coaches, athletic director and principal and dean of students should look into this situation. its an Embarrassement and shows absolutley no class.it was great that three made it to the finals but Wright got beat by someone hes thumped several times, the next was senior Grey getting tec falled by a freshman and the third one Mcginley got stuck winning 7-4 with 23 seconds left. will this be addressed or will it be swept under the rug like so many other cathedral athletic problems, like the big fight between the mcginleys at the cathedral invitational. outrageous language and fist flying yet nothing happened. what ever happened to disicipline?
