  1. A lot of top-level officials use this technique--but it's not just rigid counting. All the things you mention have to be considered. After a few years' of experience officiating, I always used this technique as one tool for determining stalling; but I counted offensive moves of all types, not just shots.
  2. Ha. Just want to make sure people don't miss the announcement. The debate doesn't bother me...it's roughly the 300th incarnation of it since Coach Peck launched his site back in the day.
  3. By now, you've most likely seen the posted announcement about the selection procedures for the 2012-13 IHSWCA Classed Duals State Finals event. A few schools may be interested in moving up in class to be challenged by more difficult competition. Any school that wants to move up in class is free to move up to any class above them. For this season, though, the time is very, very short because we will begin calculating points on Saturday. Here is the selection procedures document. The school classifications are in alphabetical order in the Appendix at the end of the document: http://indianamat.com/stuff/IHSWCA_Duals_State_Finals_Selection_Procedures.pdf If your school wants to move up in class, you MUST DECLARE your intention BEFORE SATURDAY. The official DEADLINE is MIDNIGHT FRIDAY NIGHT. Head Coaches from 1A or 2A schools, please email IHSWCA Vice-President Danny Struck at dstruck@gcs.k12.in.us and include the following information: Your school Your name Which class you want to be in (moving up, not down, of course) If you decide to move up, you are INELIGIBLE to qualify for your originally assigned class. You will be calculated for your chosen class only for the NEXT TWO SEASONS until classifications are re-calculated. IF YOU THINK YOUR SCHOOL IS ONE THAT MAY WANT TO MOVE UP, TAKE ACTION! CALL SOMEONE OR TELL SOMEONE THAT THIS IS POSTED SO THEY CAN READ IT AND MAKE A DECISION!
  4. 7 of the 8 invitations will be given after this season's state finals are finished because there's so much to plan logistically for the athletic departments of the schools; so if a team has a high volume of strong underclassmen that don't come back out for wrestling, this is the one situation where it is feasible to have an undeserving team at the event. Had there been an event this year, there was one team of the 24 that would have been invited that had a fall-off compared to what their undergrad performance suggested they'd be this year--and it was because star kids didn't come back out for wrestling. But all the top teams in their class would still be there--no potential state champion team would not have been invited.
  5. Even with the 3 high placers, Indian Creek's points would not have been enough to qualify for the event because their undergrad points would not have been good enough. In 1A especially, also, the lower places are much higher points than in other classes, so having 3 or 4 great wrestlers (even underclassmen) won't get it done if you have numerous forfeits like they did that year. The point system won't have strange teams due to this situation. The only way a team can get high points and then have a bad duals team the next year is if all their kids don't come back out.
  6. I'm always open to suggestions, by the way. The Carroll sectional is very deep. Although there's no one dominating team, there's a lot of overall quality that makes it very difficult to get a high volume of points for a particular team.
  7. There was no stipulation discussed by the coaches about this. If someone bumps up, other schools will stay where they are. If the smaller school can beat out the bigger school for a spot...well, the bigger school should have wrestled better.
  8. We're working on getting something to the sectional tourney directors. If this doesn't work out how we hope, we'll post something here on the website.
  9. It's a strength adjuster that helps project how many sectional and regional points you would have if you were in a perfectly average sectional. Yours is weak because there's Yorktown, you, and virtually nothing else. The points depth is very, very low because of the many smaller, weaker schools--so it's too easy for a decent team (you) to rack up huge sectional/regional points (according to our scoring system) because of advancing more than you would in a more balanced sectional.
  10. We all wanted badly for there to be a strong element of "you earn it on the mat." That's why we created a Scoring System--not a rating system. If your team performs well during the individual tournament, you can earn a position. If not, you won't. Don't get too bogged down in the details. At its core, you earn points two ways: 1. Your undergrads earn points, straight up. What they earn is what you get. 2. Your full team gives you a "per person" replacement score that we use to tell us what a normal new starter in your program will earn next year. Add the two together and you have your points. It's fully dependent on what you do in the upcoming state series--earn your way in! For 2A, you would have needed about 220 points to be first in line for the last couple positions. All 8 of the teams that would have earned the positions are in the Top 9 of the current 2A coaches' rankings.

  12. The multiplier was developed based on full-season data from all teams from last season. There was plenty of data for everyone. The multiplier is the only place Genius is used in any aspect of the points...and it will always be a year ahead so that a full season of data creates it.
  13. Coach Struck and I are working on getting announcements and instructions to all the sectional tournament directors for this point. If that doesn't work as well as we hope, we'll post something online.
  14. Alright, the document everyone has been waiting for is here. There WILL be a 2012-2013 IHSWCA Classed Team Duals State Finals event! Here is the official selection procedure and scoring system document, describing how the 8 teams from each of three classes will be determined. It is based almost exclusively on how well individuals on your team do in the upcoming IHSAA individual state finals. This scoring system was meticulously researched and developed and predicts very effectively who will be the best teams next year. If there had been an event this year, 22 of the 24 invited teams would be ranked in the top 11 of their class right now--and all the Big Dogs from each class with a legitimate chance to win state would have been invited. You will be able to track your team's score all through the next 4 weeks RIGHT HERE!! We believe this event will be very special! Get fired up!! http://indianamat.com/stuff/IHSWCA_Duals_State_Finals_Selection_Procedures.pdf
  15. Yeah, this sectional should be killer. The CG win over Roncalli was deserved, but the full-season data says it was clearly an upset. It's not enough to suggest Warren is the favorite over Roncalli. I think Roncalli will end up winning by 25 or 30, but the right day could give the win to Warren, Greenfield, or New Pal.
  16. Rankings updated through January 23. This is the final edition unless someone makes me aware of something big I'm missing. As always, please chime in with your thoughts. I've looked at all results posted on this site and in many other places, but I don't always know if a team is missing 7 starters for SAT tests or something. Good luck this weekend, everyone!

  18. One more volunteer needed. We're getting a great group together!
  19. Still looking for 5 more people. decbell...I forgot to tell you back a couple weeks ago already that we can't pm you because your box is full.
  20. An announcement is coming very soon from the IHSWCA about the logistics of the selection procedure for the IHSWCA Duals State Championship for next year. I will let them comment further on the details of what's already been announced. In the meantime, there are 2 of us in place for managing data collection and scoring during the upcoming individual state series. We need SEVEN more volunteer DATA MANAGERS. If you meet the following desired description, please send me a personal message as soon as possible and I will get you up to speed once the coaches have officially released the information. Desired qualifications: --College graduate --Background in accounting, mathematics, business, computer programming, or other science involving data entry, math, or data management of some sort Time commitment: --Approximately 20 hours through the 4 weeks of the upcoming individual state series Coaches, officials, or anyone else is certainly welcome. I just need people that will be able to understand what we're doing and are willing to put in a little time to help this thing run. As I said, send me a personal message with a brief description of who you are and I'll start getting you up to speed with some background information. Thanks!
  21. As NICfan said, you cannot go LOWER than the weight you weigh in for. If your actual body weight is one weight class lower--too bad--you are only eligible at the weight class you weighed in. You can't go down because you missed weighing in for that weight, and you can't go higher because you don't weigh enough. Again, example: A coach tells his kid to weigh in at 145. He steps on the scale with the 145-pound kids and weighs 136. He can now only wrestle 145 because he missed his chance to weigh in at 138 and because he doesn't weigh enough, by rule, to wrestle 152. As always, though, if your actual weight is in the normal 145-pound range, and you weigh in with the 145's; you are eligible for both 145 and 152. In my opinion, it makes zero sense to weigh a kid in at a higher class than his actual weight. You can still have the kid introduced at the higher weight during announcements and use whatever gamesmanship in moving kids around.
  22. MadHts: You're exactly right. It's a simple rule. It was explained in clear detail by the NFHS when it came out and has been applied correctly in the situations I've seen. 106 is open. Kids weigh in. 106 is closed. 113 is open. Kids weigh in. 113 is closed. 120 is open....etc. These scenarios being presented make no sense to me. The rule is cut and dried. The only part we should have to use our brains on is making sure a kid weighs enough to wrestle the class he weighs in for or attempts to wrestle. There's no going lower, though. Closed is closed.
