  6. Agreed.... Palmer's Stats 1979: 2nd at 155 (29-2 record) 1980: 1st at 167 (20-0 record) 1981: 1st at 167 (29-0 record) 1982: 1st at 177 (32-0 Record) Career Record: 110-2 David won Junior Freestyle Nationals (Fargo) in 1982.... I have the Stop Sign in my office... pretty cool to look at every day! In 1982 David was the Indiana Wrestling Federation Outstanding Wrestler of the Year In 1982 David was selected to the USA Wrestling High School Dream Team David was the first Indiana wrestler to ever make the world team and the first to win a gold medal in the 1979 world championships in San Diego, Calf. He went on to win a World Gold Medal in 1982 as well In 1982 David’s senior year, he was the number one college recruit in the country in his weight class. He wrestled for Oklahoma University on a full ride scholarship. He was inducted in the wrestlers Hall of Fame in the 1990’s.
  7. Delta 1981 Lineup and Stats Team Record: 8-0 IHSAA State Champions IHSAA Semi State Champions IHSAA Regional Champions IHSAA Sectional Champions (Set largest margin victory at state tournament that held for almost 40 years) *With only 13 wrestlers in a lineup and only placing Top 4* Lineup (only had 13 Weight classes) 98: David Irving (10th) - Semi State Qualifier - (21-6 record) (got 4th his junior year and got 2nd his senior year and went on to wrestle at IU) 105: Brad Kennedy (11th)- Semi State Qualifier (got 3rd his senior year and went on to wrestle at Uindy) 112: Chris Ruble (12th) - IHSAA 4th Place - (25-7 record) 119: Doug Campbell (12th) - IHSAA State Qualifier (24-4 record) (was also a state qualifier as a sophomore) 126: Chris Campbell (12th) - IHSAA State Champ - (30-0 record) (3rd as soph. and 2nd as junior) 132: Don Heintzelman (12th) - IHSAA State Champ - (16-2 record) (went on to wrestle at Notre Dame) 138: David Locke (9th) - Semi State Qualifier - (21-7 record) (rest of career speaks for itself) 145: Jeff Cox (11th) - Regional Qualifier (9-3 record) 155: Greg Gadbury (12th) - IHSAA State Champ - (32-0 record) (3rd place as a junior) 167: David Palmer (11th) - IHSAA State Champ - (29-0) (2nd as freshman, 1st as Sophomore, and 1st as senior) Went on to wrestle at Oklahoma and was one of the best if not the best wrestlers to ever come through Indiana I could go on and on with accolades 189: Steve Stewart (12th) HWT: John Good (12th) (was a state qualifier as a junior) By the words of David Locke... this was the best team that Delta had in their dominating run in the 80s and there were some really good teams that followed. Guys that couldn't fit in lineup because they were behind state champs and the next year after they graduated they either won state themselves or were state placers. Example: John Ginther (wrestled varsity all year then lost to State Champ Heintzelman in wrestle off right before sectionals) Ginther went on to go 4th-1st-1st. They tried to dual St, Paris Graham who was ranked #1 in country at time, but they didn't want to... finally convinced them to a few years later and beat them. Years following this team they were ranked in the Top 5 in the country (and this team had 7 seniors in the lineup.
  8. Don Patton - Head Coach for Delta from 1976-1986 Overall Record was 101-13 in his first two season as head coach they went 4-5 both years (10 of his 13 losses as a head coach came in his first two seasons) Went on to coach 48 state qualifiers - 33 of those 48 we state placers - 13 of those were state champions Also coached 5 Team State titles, 2nd Place finish, and a 4th Place finish
  9. Delta teams in the 80s 1981: Team had 4 state champs and one 4th place (only placed top 4) 1984: Team had 3 state champs and one 3rd place (only placed top 4)
  10. Braxton Russell from Delta Freshman year went 17-12 and was a regional qualifier at 160lbs Sophomore year wrestled first tournament of year…. Found out he had two stress fractures in his back and probably wasn’t going to wrestle the rest of the year… had a remarkable recovery was able to come back in January and made a run during tournament series and became a IHSAA State Qualifier at 170lbs (lost Friday night to guy who got 5th) and finished season 21-6. Now as a junior is 14-1 (loss is to the #3 ranked guy) and is currently ranked #13 at 170
