Friday Night in the B1G. Minny @ UMich & PSU @ Iowa

Recommended Posts

Great action on BTN and Wisky @Maryland on BTN+

#1 vs. #2 - Penn State @ Iowa in Carver-Hawkeye Arena - Start time 9:15pm Eastern - Who ya got?  Lots of highly ranked matchups here, including our own Nick Lee vs. Jayden Eierman, a repeat of last year's National Championship!

Minnesota @ Michigan up first - 3 former Hoosier High School grapplers going in this one - Micic, B. Lee, Parris.  Will Gable Steveson step on the mat for another showdown with Mason?  How will Parris bounce back after last weekends loss to Greg Kerkvliet?

Michigan starts out quick with wins at 125 and 133.  Nick Suriano took it to Patrick McKee and gets a 14-6 Major.  Dylan Ragusin gets a late takedown to beat Jake Gilva 6-5.

Stevan Micic back in the lineup this week after sitting out last weekend, but doesn't look good.  He drops a 5-2 decision to Jakob Bergeland, with 2+ minutes of riding time, dominated on top.  He got the legs in and had Stevan really stretched out after an early takedown.  He then fought off a few good attacks from Micic that looked like sure takedowns.

149 - Minnesota gets a MD from Michael Blockhaus over Pat Nolan
157 - Brayton Lee earns a tough 5-4 decision over Will Lewan.  Minny leads 10-7 at Intermission.

165 - Cam Amine gets a 6-1 decision over Cael Carlson
174 - Logan Massa wins 7-4 over Baba, er Bailee O'Reilly in a match that was a little chippy.  Massa penalized a point for taunting.  It was as they were positioning for a restart so something that was said.  Couldn't see anything specific on TV.
184 - Myles Amine with a solid 12-4 MD over Sam Skillings.  Note: this isn't meant to be deragatory against Myles Amine and his Bronze medal Olympic run, but I find if weird every time they say that.  While it's true, if he wrestled for the USA he'd have been the 4th best wrestler at Penn State (David Taylor, Bo Nickal, Aaron Brooks) alone and likely the 5th best US wrestler (Zahid Valencia).  He still had to beat International wrestlers and earn bronze, but wrestling for San Marino certainly helped.
197 - Patrick Brucki gets the job done with an 8-2 win to seal the Dual win for Michigan.

285 - Mason Parris vs. Gable Steveson - Gable dominates Mason once again. As good of an athlete as Mason is, Gable makes him look slow.  This match wasn't close and Steveson let him know it.  Final 18-8 GS.  Michigan takes the dual 20-14

Penn State @ Iowa

125 - Former State Champ from Penn HS, Drew Hildebrandt starts off the dual with a 9-0 Major over Jesse Ybarra.  Hildebrandt got a 4 pt NF as time expired in the 3rd to give him the major.  Nice win for Drew!
133 - RBY gets a tough 3-2 win over DeSanto.  AD was the aggressor the whole match and took shot after shot, but RBY stuffed them all.  RBY did give up a stalling point, as he didn't even try to score until the middle of the 2nd period.
141 - Nick Lee wins another classic against Jaydin Eierman!   Lee had a 4-2 lead with 1:11 in riding time and gave up a take down with :12 left to erase riding time and take the match to sudden victory.  Eierman was sucking wind as they began SV.  He took a shot quickly and Nick stuffed it with heavy hips, pushed down on the head and spun behind for a take down and the win, quieting 15k fans in Carver-Hawkeye. Note: Lee's 1st take down after Eierman hit a throw straight to the back, but Nick rolled thru for no score.  Eierman then tried to roll Nick with a chest wrap and Lee fought it off, spun through and got the takedown.  JE threw everything he had, but Nick had answers.   PSU 10-0 at this point.
149 - Iowa bounces back as Max Murin gets a 4-1 decision over Beau Bartlett.
157 - Kaleb Young for Iowa wins as expected.  PSU's Terrell Barraclough held him to a 2-0 decision, which basically equates to a win for the Nittany Lions.
165 - Alex Marinelli was dominant with a 10-2 Major over Brady Berge.  Marinelli pushed him around the whole match and Berge was completely gassed at the end.  10-10 after 6 matches
174 - Lots of intense, close matches!  Carter Starocci pulls out a 2-1 TB-1 win over Michael Kemerer.  Both were close to takedowns along the way, but Starocci outlasted him,
184 - A solid, controlling 8-3 win for Aaron Brooks over Abe Assad
197 - Another battle!  Max Dean gets another crazy win.  Down 3-0 in the 3rd, Dean escapes and gets a takedown to tie it up.  Then works the bow and arrow in the last :30 to get 4 NF points as time clicked away.  Add a riding time point and Dean has an 8-3 decision over Jacob Warner.  19-10 PSU and the Dual is locked up.
285 - Tony Cassioppi wins 7-2 over Greg Kerkvliet.  Kerk tried to throw him twice and it didn't work either time.  PSU wins 19-13
