BIO

Jason Warthan will head into his fifth year at the head of the UIndy wrestling program in 2013-14. Warthan, a Greyhound wrestling alum, mentored the program's first National Champion in 2011. Warthan has coached five All-Americans and twelve national qualifiers.

This past season, Coach Warthan's Greyhounds finished 19th in the nation behind two All-Americans and four national qualifiers. Junior Alex Johns finished fifth at 125-pounds and classmate Cameryn Brady took seventh at 149-pounds. The Greyhounds finished fifth in the NWCA All-Academic team race, while nine members were honored with All-Academic selections. The Greyhounds finished with a 5-2 dual record with wins over #5 Wisconsin Parkside and #15 Maryville, and fourth in Super Regional 3.

In 2011-12, Warthan led UIndy back to Nationals, with a trio of Greyhounds qualifying for the NCAA Division II Championships. Freshman Josh Kieffer came home from the meet as an All-American, taking sixth in the 125-pound weight class. In addition to Kieffer's All-American finish, Ethan Harris became the first UIndy wrestler to earn NWCA All-Academic honors all four years of his career.

The 2010-11 Greyhounds finished the year with a dual meet record of 4-5, with a pair of national qualifiers in Nick Walpole and Matt Irwin. Both earned All-American status, with Walpole taking the 149-pound national title and Irwin taking sixth at 141.

Warthan's first year, 2009-10, the Greyhounds posted a dual record of 10-9 with three national qualifiers.

Warthan returned to UIndy after a successful coaching career at Columbus North High School. There, Warthan spent five years as the head wrestling coach, leading the team to five straight sectional championships, a regional title, a semi-state title and the school’s first team state appearance. He’s mentored six all-state grapplers, including the school's first individual state champ, a runner-up and 11 state qualifiers.

At UIndy, Warthan was a three-time qualifier for nationals, earning All-America status in 2000. The two-time Midwest Classic and 2000 Midwest Regional champion racked-up an impressive 88-28 (.759) career record as a wrestler. He was also a three-time Little State champion as a Greyhound, a two-time team captain, two-time team MVP and was named the 2000 Midwest Regional's Most Outstanding Wrestler. Warthan also ran cross country and was a decathlete in the spring for the Greyhound track and field team. He finished third in the decathlon in 2001 and fourth in 2002 at the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championships.

In the classroom, Warthan was an Honor Roll student and twice made the Dean’s List. He was named a Verizon Academic All-American wrestler in his senior season.
