WRESTLING: Jeff?s Weekley earns state runner up By GREG MENGELT Greg.Mengelt@newsandtribune.com The Jeffersonville News and Tribune Sun Feb 20, 2011, 12:19 AM EST INDIANAPOLIS ? Jeffersonville senior Renaldo Weekley fell to top-ranked and defending 145-pound champion Eric Roach, 3-1, in the state championship match on Saturday at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. Weekly won twice early in the day ? in a pin of Laquan Lunford of South Bend Clay and a 5-4 decision over Evansville Memorial?s Roy Whetstine ? to advance to the championship match. Weekley and Roach were scoreless after one period and Roach led 1-0 after two periods. Weekley evened the match with an escape to open the third period, but Roach improved to 42-0 when he got a takedown of Weekley with 1:40 left in the match. ?We are extremely proud of Renaldo,? Jeff coach Dan Struck said. ?He started wrestling as a freshman and has had an outstanding career. His confidence was fun to watch as a coach, to see a young man who believes in himself that way. Weekley entered the individual state tournament ranked fourth in the state and his season ended with a mark of 50-2. He defeated the third, fifth and sixth ranked wrestlers to get to the final match. Jeff?s 215-pounder, senior Jimmy Pratt, finished seventh by pinning Kokomo?s Cameron Colby in his final match. ?We told them both we love them and to promise us that even bigger things could come in their lives,? Struck said of Pratt and Weekley. Junior Alonzo Shepherd went 0-3 on Saturday after qualifying for the top-8 on Friday. He finished eighth in the state. ?All he had to say to me after his match was this won?t happen again,? Struck said. ?He said, ?I start working on Monday.??
