WRESTLING: Jeff wrestlers roll in opening round at state By MATT KOESTERS Matt.Koesters@newsandtribune.com The Jeffersonville News and Tribune Sat Feb 19, 2011, 12:42 AM EST INDIANAPOLIS ? All three of Jeffersonville?s representatives at the IHSAA Individual Wrestling State Championship at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis advanced to the quarterfinals on Friday with wins over their opening round opponents. In the 215-pound weight class, Jeff?s Jimmy Pratt defeated South Bend Clay?s Joe Gallegos, who was ranked fifth in the state, by a 3-2 tally. Pratt scored on Gallegos with a take-down in the first period and an escape in the second, then held on in the third period for the win. ?We always knew that Jimmy could be a state-place winner,? Jeffersonville wrestling coach Danny Struck said. ?He just had to believe in himself, and he did tonight.? At 112, Jeff?s Alonzo Shepherd knocked off Mitch Snyder of Hamilton Southeastern with a dominant 12-1 victory. ?Alonzo started the day saying, ?this place doesn?t look as big as it did last year,?? Struck said. Shepherd got up 4-1 in the first period with two takedowns. Twice Shepherd was able to turn Snyder for three points apiece, and took a reversal in the final period. Shepherd will face Paul Petrove of Hanover Central today. At 145, Renaldo Weekly continued his dominance by scoring three takedowns in the first period on Zionsville?s Adam Kern, and went up on Kern 12-2 before pinning his opponent at 2:56. Today, Weekly will wrestle Lacquan Lunford of South Bend Clay, the No. 3 wrestler at 145 in the state. ?The boys have looked ready tonight,? Struck said. ?They came in and warmed up at 3:30 (p.m.)... The rest of the entire state finals competitors just sat and watched them. They were ready to go right off the bat, and really showed that they are some of the best kids in the state.?
