CHARLESTOWN

 

PIRATES WIND UP SEVENTH AT JEFF: Charlestown had no wrestlers finish in the top two spots of its respective divisions, as it placed seventh at last weekend?s Jeff Classic at Johnson Arena. The Pirates scored 116 points.

 

Logan McCutchen posted the highest finish for a Charlestown wrestler, placing third at 215 pounds. McCutchen went 5-1 during the tournament.

 

Teammate Cory Suddeth (152) wound up fourth with a 3-2 record, while the Pirates? Jacob Hall (160) and Ethan Bowen (189) each finished fifth with 3-2 marks.

WARRIORS 12TH AT JEFF CLASSIC: Three Christian Academy wrestlers placed in the top eight to finish 12th as a team at the Jeff Classic last weekend with 68 points.

 

The highest-finishing Warrior was Caleb Delbridge (285). The senior placed fourth with a 4-2 record.

 

Fellow senior Levi Speth (152) placed fifth with a 3-2 mark, while teammate Daniel Doty (103) was eighth with a 2-3 record.

HIGHLANDERS GO PERFECT IN FLOYD INVITE: Last Saturday, Floyd Central won each of its five dual meets to capture its own invitational crown. The Highlanders downed Corydon, Vincennes Lincoln, South Oldham (Ky.), Walton-Verona and Louisville St. Xavier.

 

Floyd?s Terrence Kennedy, John Meldrum, Michael Kruer, Chase Herron and Andrew Sharp each posted 5-0 records. In the St. X dual meet, Sharp (285) pinned his opponent in the final match, enabling the Highlanders to edge the Tigers 35-33.

 

?The match of the day was again against St. X. The past three years that dual has come down to the last match. It is always an exciting dual meet,? Floyd head coach Brandon Sisson said. ?The guys are continuing to improve and that is the name of the game. If you?re not getting better, you?re getting worse. You never stay the same.?

 

Floyd?s Lance Youtsey was 4-0. Going 4-1 for the Highlanders were Gus Schoenbaechler, Jackson Randall and Nick Ottersbach.

JEFFERSONVILLE

 

RED DEVILS FOURTH AT CLASSIC: Jeff finished in fourth place at last weekend?s Jeff Classic, scoring 203 points.

 

The Red Devils had two division champions in junior Alonzo Shepherd and senior Renaldo Weekley, as each posted 4-0 records. Shepherd claimed the 112-pound class, while Weekley was the champ at 145. It was Weekley?s second career Jeff Classic crown.

 

A pair of Jeff grapplers placed third in senior Kevim Castro at 125 and senior Ryan Dewitt at 285. Both wrestlers recorded 4-1 records.

 

Evansville Mater Dei won the meet with 301 points, followed by Jennings County with 245 and Bloomington South with 230 1/2.

VARSITY ?B? SQUAD FOURTH AT HORSEPOWER INVITE: The Jeff varsity ?B? squad finished fourth out of 16 teams at the Louisville Moore Horsepower Invitational last Saturday.

 

The Red Devils won their pool by defeating Fairdale (Ky.) and Owensboro (Ky.) Apollo. But after defeating Louisville Southern in the single-elimination portion of the tourney, they lost to Boyle (Ky.) and McCreary (Ky.).

 

Two Jeff wrestlers went 4-1 in freshman JoJo DeLeon (112) and junior Brandon Brown (189/215). Teammate Daniel Thompson was 3-1 at 160.

MUSTANGS PLACE 14TH AT JEFF: Two fourth-place finishes enabled New Washington to finish 14th at the Jeff Classic last weekend. The Mustangs tallied 40 points.

 

New Washington?s Brady Meenach (125) and Lane Massingham (140) were the fourth-place finishers, as both posted 3-2 records. Teammate Jacob Franklin (160) ended up eighth with a 2-3 mark.

PROVIDENCE

 

PIONEERS 3-2 AT HORSEPOWER INVITE: Providence had two wrestlers go undefeated as it went 3-2 at the Louisville Moore Horsepower Invitational last Saturday. The Pioneers posted victories over Moore, Nelson County (Ky.) and Western Hills (Ky.).

 

The Pioneers? 5-0 grapplers were juniors Jared Griffith (125) and Brennan Gregory (130). Griffith upped his record to 14-1. Providence sophomore Daniel Fernandez (160) went 4-1, and Pioneer freshmen Josh Murner (119) and Ben Hauber (135) each were 3-2.

 

?All things considered, we wrestled well over the weekend,? Providence head coach Patrick Fleming said. ?Giving up three forfeits continues to hurt us on the team level, but several of our individuals are progressing nicely. Freshmen Josh Murner and Ben Hauber were both a pleasant surprise, winning three of their matches. Griffith gets better each week.?
