CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa ? Team Jeff wrestler Gavan Jolley-Little captured the 285-pound cadet division national championship at the Asics/USA Wrestling National Championships at the University of Northern Iowa on Saturday.

?We are very proud of Gavan,? Team Jeff and Jeffersonville High School wrestling coach Danny Struck said. ?Gavan was up against two guys that were favored to beat him, and he kept his head and won.?

Jolley-Little opened the tournament with a win over a familiar opponent in Zach Wood of Oxford, Ill. Wood dispatched Jolley-Little in a USA Wrestling regional compeition last year. Jolley-Little avenged the loss with a 5-4 decision.

Jolley-Little took a 4-2 decision in the semifinals of the tournament over seven-time Iowa state champion Jacob Marnin before facing off against Shawn Streck, who Jolley-Little defeated in the Indiana folkstyle championship two weeks prior. Jolley-Little again prevailed with a 2-1 decision.

?(Gavan) called me very excited before and after every round,? Struck said. ?He knows that he is going to be happy about this today ... (but will) keep working toward Fargo national championships in freestyle and Greco-Roman. Gavan wants to go to the IHSAA state finals and he is working hard toward that.?

Jolley-Little won the heavyweight division at sectional as a sophomore. He is the Indiana State Wrestling Association folkstyle champion.

Jolley-Little?s success is part of what Struck called ?a huge spring break for Team Jeff.? The team took 10 championships at the Kentucky State Folkstyle Championships at Louisville Central, out of 20 competitions entered.

Additionally, Jeffersonville freshman Jasmine Fuller earned All-American honors wrestling in the USA Wrestling Girls? Folkstyle Championship in Oklahoma City, where she took sixth in the nation in her age group.

?We are very proud of Jasmine,? Struck said. ?She is only a freshman, so we hope she will be one of our next national champions.?

The last female wrestler to win a national championship for Team Jeff was two-time champion Becky Cissel in 2008.
