  1. 12/8/2010 Wrestling Community: The IHSWCA Board, Regional Representatives, and Team State Committee met this past Sunday, December 5th. The main focus of the meeting was responsibilities of the Regional Representatives and of course the team state series. When discussing the team state series many topics about the short term and long term health of our sport were discussed. If you are a head coach and not a member of the IHSWCA your regional representative will be contacting you. The primary way to make our organization more viable is to grow our membership. We still have not reached our goal of one member per school. We also are looking for a two representatives who are willing to serve for the Calumet and Pendleton Heights Regionals. Next week all AD?s will be sent a survey from the IHSWCA. They are to forward it to our head coaches. We are working to get 100% participation from all head coaches in the state. We have to know what the coaches around the state truly want for our sport before we can make some critical decisions. I ask that you answer the questions honestly on want you believe to be the best for our sport. Do not base your answers on want you think we can get or what is currently in place. The survey will be conducted electronically through survey monkey. This will allow for timely completion and data gathering. I hope all of your seasons are off to a great start and best of luck. Thank you. Cale Hoover President, IHSWCA Hooverc1@centergrove.k12.in.us 317-881-0581 ext. 4287 317-502-8796

  3. 11/18/2010 Wrestling Community: The IHSWCA Board and Regional Representatives met this past Sunday, November 14th. Many topics were discussed, but certainly the main focus was the team state series. A committee of the following members was recommended and approved by those in attendance: 1. Sam Riesen ? Churubusco 2. Mark Kerrn ? Jimtown 3. Mike Atwood ? Delphi 4. Tyson Skinner ? Madison 5. Trent Staggs ? Martinsville 6. Jim Tonte ? Perry Meridian After discussion the following task/goals were created: 1. Work on saving the current team state. 2. Work on a plan to improve the team state series for the betterment of all wrestling programs A great deal of time was spent brainstorming and discussing ideas. We will be contacting every head coach in the state for their input on this matter. It is essential that we get honest and open feedback from the representative of each program. We have to know what the wrestling community wants. In response to the article in the Indy Star; I will tell you that the IHSAA has never once told any member of the coaches association that we were violating a by-law when we awarded the coaches trophy. I have been on the board for 3 ? years and they have never once mentioned this in our numerous discussions. We will be holding another meeting on December 5th and will have another update at that point. Thank you. Cale Hoover President, IHSWCA Hooverc1@centergrove.k12.in.us 317-881-0581 ext. 4287 317-502-8796
  4. 1. Each coach gets to set his own schedule. No one, not even the IHSAA can prevent you from scheduling as many duals as you like. 2. The idea of a JV qualifier has not been discussed during my time as a coach. I can tell you we would have a difficult time with the IHSAA on this one. 3. Girls wrestling is struggling to grow here for many reasons. Certainly culture is to blame for some of it. Also, the IHSAA has not been interested in adding sports as of late, however, with the status of gymnastics up in the air this might change.
  5. TripleB, that is the first time all of this discussion has made me laugh at loud!
  6. Prepared to win: 1. The major problem with the venue is having the tournament outgrow the facility. The main problem is getting the floor space for more than four mats. The ISWA has a similar problem in finding facilities with large floor spaces and adequate seating. These places (Conseco for example) are expensive. I will tell you they get our facility at CG for almost nothing. It is a tough deal to beat. 2. I have seen many processes to qualify, and I agree many are interesting. We must work to develop a system that the majority of coaches would support. 3. All the costs can be calculated from data the IHSAA releases. We would have to convince them this would be 100% successful. 4. When I talk man hours, understand, the IHSAA does not want to spend 1 second longer of their time with our sport or any sport. All of this would need to be done without adding responsibility to them. We will be meeting this weekend with a committee proposal to the Regional Representatives and all members in attendance. Once approved, the team state committee will begin work. I will be directing them to consider both short term and long term possibilities. I want to stress to everyone that you do not walk into the IHSAA with suggestions, requests, or proposals and think they are going to be eagerly looking to make changes. They have a long history of small changes over a period of time. I fully understand that the IHSWCA will not make everyone happy. That is impossible. I do hope people understand that I want what is best for our sport right now and in the future. Ultimately, JD Minch, Trent McCormick, and I bear the responsibility of what will be proposed at the end of the school year. I am positive some people will be happy and some will be disappointed in what we do!
  7. Karl, I am working to get it done. I am just not doing it the way you want me to. I would love to have met with you longer, however I did not know who you were. You introduced yourself at the end of the last day of freestyle state. I have email and I also have a phone. I am sorry you are disappointed in the first meeting. I have many demands on my time and I apologize for not giving you what you wanted.
  8. They have never mentioned a 3 week tournament to me. If you want my honest answer I will give it, but the IHSAA is not very forthright with information. I think they want to go back to where we had the individual tournament with no wrestlebacks. They will not come out and say why, but they were ok with the team tournament as long as it was profitable. I know they are not looking to expand class sports to "individual sports" which is what we are still labeled.
  9. If you have a well thought out proposal with numbers I would love to see it. email me at : hooverc1@centergrove.k12.in.us
  10. I try to stay off this message board for the most part, but I have some concern over some items I have read. I get disappointed when people talk but are not willing to follow it up with action. I try to be very thoughtful and precise with everything I say and write. I want to be honest, transparent, and paint an appropriate picture. I will not be making a major proposal of class wrestling at this point because the answer would be no. We must know ahead of time how the committee will vote. In order to make this type of proposal I would need at least the following (and probably more with more time to think): 1. a new venue (we won't get a venue for what they IHSAA pays to rent our gym at Center Grove) 2. a new qualifcation system 3. Costs involved (officials, transportation, awards) 4. IHSAA man hours invovled in making these changes happen For example, the IHSAA does not want to expand the field to 16 teams because it doubles the amount of their reimbursements. These get quite expensive.
  11. Wrestling Community: I hope all teams are off to a great start to their seasons. We have one week of practice down and excitement is high as we all try to piece together line ups and figure out weight classes. The annual fall clinic held at Warren Central was a success. We would like to thank Les Gutches, the IU and Purdue Coaching staffs, the, NWCA, Scott Vlink, Trent McCormick, and Jim Harshaw of Riot Sports for their presentations. I personally would like to thank Trent McCormick, JD Minch, Greg Gastineau, Brett Clark, and Steve Livingston for their work in planning the clinic. The major topic of our business meeting concerned the status of our team state tournament. I have had many conversations with coaches around the state and I will try to summarize the issue below. 1. The team state tournament is in jeopardy. This is a financial issue. Attendance has decreased from 5000-6000 to an all-time low of 1250 last year. I believe it runs deeper than just the economy or Ev. Mater Dei making the final 8. If we want to save the tournament we must be in attendance. 2. I would be supportive of both a classed team and individual tournament. I know this is controversial, but in my opinion this would be the greatest boost in growth and interest we could ever give wrestling in our state. 3. I will not be making a proposal for any type of class wrestling this year unless the political landscape has greatly changed by April. We are in no position politically to propose something of this magnitude. We must be able to walk into a proposal meeting already knowing the outcome. If we go in hoping things will go our way we will leave disappointed. Those of you who were interested in serving on the Team State committee will be contacted by VP Trent McCormick soon. We will be proposing a list of committee members to the Regional Representatives and IHSWCA members who are in attendance at our meeting this Sunday. At that point the Team State committee will begin its work. Thank you. Cale Hoover President, IHSWCA Hooverc1@centergrove.k12.in.us 317-881-0581 ext. 4287 317-502-8796
  12. Attendance has been decling for the better part of 5 years. The event at Center Grove drew around 5000 spectators at its peak. Last year attendance was 1250. It is safe to say numerous reasons contribute to this.
  13. The IHSAA makes money on team state. They have never liked the idea of team state and are using the data as a way to justify the means.
  14. All of you have valid points. The truth in the matter is it will be difficult for us to get what we want. I think each of us has a plan in mind for the sport of wrestling that we think would be great. The IHSAA has a plan to, however, must of us do not like it! We will be discussing this Thursday and Friday at the coaches clinic. I encourage each of you to attend and I know Trent, JD, the Regional Representatives, and I are willing to listen to all ideas. Just remember we are playing a political game here and the IHSAA holds most of the cards. It is a critical time for us to come together and work for the benefit of wrestling in our state.
  15. We actually have never been offered wrestle backs in a trade for anything. The IHSAA has been very consistent in their stance on wrestle backs. We now have to figure out a way to get them to see things our way for a change.

  17. I.H.S.W.C.A. INDIANA HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING COACHES ASSOCIATION To: All IHSAA Head Coaches & members of the IHSWCA From: J.D. Minch - IHSWCA Secretary Re: IHSWCA Information Date: September 4, 2010 Welcome to the 2010-11 wrestling season. Enclosed you will find several pieces of important IHSWCA information. Please find enclosed: 1 ? IHSWCA Membership (Only) Form ? you do not have to fill this one out, if you use the clinic registration form ? but please include a registration form for each coach. 2 ? Fall Clinic Registration 3 ? IHSWCA Fall Clinic Information page 4 ? IHSWCA Important Date Sheet All other IHSWCA Forms can be located on the website (www.indianawrestler.com) In trying to provide the best clinic possible we were able to secure a great clinician. I?m sure all will agree that Name of our clinician will provide an excellent presentation. We will once again offer the IHSAA Rules Interpretation Meeting at the clinic. It is scheduled for Thursday evening, so even if you cannot attend the clinic, you can make the rules meeting and then attend the coaches social afterwards. This year is an election year. Coach Cale Hoover ? Center Grove HS is completing his tenure as IHSWCA President and Vice President Trent McCormick - Yorktown HS will be taking over for the 2011 & 2012 school years. J.D. Minch ? formerly of North Montgomery HS retired after 33 years of teaching and coaching, but is fulfilling his tenure as Secretary/Treasurer for this year. Please note the email and address change of where I?m located now. Nominations will be taken, at the fall clinic business meeting, for the offices of Vice President and Secretary/Treasurer. Please give this some thought and come ready to nominate persons for these two positions. Next spring, the IHSWCA will be in rotation to present proposals to the IHSAA for changes to our sport. Once again come prepared to discuss issues that the IHSWCA needs to address with the IHSAA. This area will be part of the business meeting agenda and more than likely a hot topic at the clinic social. While IHSWCA cannot offer you the USA/ISWA coaches card in our clinic package, the ISWA will be contacting all previous coaches with information that will help you in the process of attaining your card. I?m sure you have heard by now that the IHSAA has a new Head Commissioner ? Bobby Cox. Bobby is replacing Blake Ress who will retire in February 2011. Bobby has been the Asst. Commissioner in charge of wrestling since he came on board with the IHSAA. We are expecting Bobby to still be in charge of wrestling this season. I hope to see all of you at the fall clinic. While there are many clinics being offered this fall in several areas of the state, the IHSWCA is the only clinic exclusively for coaches. You receive two wrestling organization memberships ? IHSWCA & NWCA, clinic gear, lunch, and a social all for a very reasonable cost. Respectfully submitted, J.D. Minch ? IHSWCA Secretary/Treasurer since 1990 New addresses: email ? jsaminch123@sbcglobal.net 202 S. Vine St. Crawfordsville, IN. 47933
  18. IHSWCA members and the wrestling community: Welcome back to another school year after a summer filled with great wrestling. Student-athletes from Indiana competed across the country in numerous events. There were several outstanding performances which should continue to be the norm as wrestling around the state continues to improve. Several issues are on the front of our minds here with the IHSWCA. Vice-President McCormick and his committee have been meeting to organize this fall?s annual clinic. The clinic will be held October 14th and 15th at Warren Central HS. Expect a detailed schedule of events very soon. We have chosen the Thursday/Friday format because it seems to be favored by the majority of coaches. Expect to see a few new wrinkles in this year?s clinic as we look to make improvements. My goal is to create a clinic is informative and enjoyable. This should be an event no Indiana coach will want to miss. Last year at this time the big topic was a change in weight classes. This obviously did not happen. The most significant change this year could be Asst. Commissioner Bobby Cox taking over the IHSAA from the retiring Blake Ress later this year. Mr. Cox has been the wrestling liaison for many years. Communications with Mr. Cox has lead to the topic of the team state tournament. Attendance at the team state finals dipped below 1500 this past season. It is my opinion that change is most likely inevitable, but I cannot say exactly what may be the end result. We will be on top of this issue and keep you informed as information arises. I have begun my last year as President of the association. The four year commitment has been an amazing series of ups and downs. I have moved, lost organs, had twins, and dealt with the day to day aspects of life just like the rest of you. I look forward to serving this year as best as I can for the wrestling community of Indiana. It is now time for another future leader to emerge. Nominations will be taken for the positions of Vice-President and Treasurer-Secretary. The members and student-athletes of the IHSWCA need leadership of the highest caliber to represent them. Please contact us if interested. Best of luck. Cale A. Hoover Center Grove HS Social Studies Teacher, Head Wrestling Coach IHSWCA President Hooverc1@centergrove.k12.in.us 317-881-0581 ext. 1287 317-502-8796
  19. June 11th-13th at Lawrence North HS.
  20. Center Grove Ron Gaskins would be the unquestioned #1 as he placed 3rd, 1st, and 1st. After him you could debate quite a bit. Brandon Yates (6th, 4th) Joey Strausburg (4th, 3rd, 2nd) Jay Yates (SQ, 5th, 2nd) John Baxter (3rd, 2nd) Jeremy VanAlstyne (SQ, 1st) Tanner Yates (4th, 5th) Shelby Mappes (SQ, 3rd) Matt Milton (6th, 6th)
  21. Absolutely. No one ever said they were logical.
  22. Soccer has not always been classed because of the number of teams participating. They have had continuous growth in the number of schools participating. Because they are considered a team sport, their coaches associations can request to have classes once they hit certain benchmarks. We can request to have classes as well, but at this point they are not willing to render a decision because of the by-laws in place.
  23. If the IHSAA viewed/labeled wrestling as a team sport it would already be classed. Wrestling is currently considered an individual sport as is treated in a similar fashion to golf, tennis, swimming, and track & field. The IHSAA would have to have a major shift in philosphy in order for this to happen.
