  2. Badger wrestler Andrew Howe finished first at the 2009 FILA Junior World Team Trials Saturday afternoon in Colorado Springs. The Cedar Lake, Ind., native captured the 74 kg/163 lbs. freestyle division and he will be joining fellow sophomore-to-be Travis Rutt on the U.S. FILA Junior World Team. Rutt placed first in the 84 kg/185 lbs. Greco-Roman division Friday and by winning their weight classes, Howe and Rutt earned the opportunity to compete at the FILA Junior World Championships in Anaka, Turkey from Aug. 4-9.
  3. BY BRIAN WADDLE Times Correspondent | Sunday, March 22, 2009 | (No comments posted.) Howe incredible it was just getting there. Quite impressive, in fact, for a true freshman. Hanover Central product Andrew Howe, representing the University of Wisconsin, fell just short of a national championship, losing a tough 3-2 match to Edinboro senior Jarrod King in the NCAA championship at 165 pounds on Saturday night at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis. The championships aired live on ESPN. "I'm not mad at the way I wrestled, I'm disappointed because I feel I'm better than that kid," Howe said. "I know it's already got me hungry (for next season). I want that national title." Howe (30-5), the No. 2 seed who was coming off a Big Ten Championship, had his string of 19 consecutive wins snapped. He hadn't lost since December. Howe was the aggressor the entire way. He chased King most of the match and even ESPN announcers questioned why no stalling calls were issued. "I felt like I was pushing the action, but that one little mistake was the match," said Howe, referring to the third period takedown that gave King a 3-1 lead with 1:29 left. It wasn't an easy road for Howe, who beat Iowa's Ryan Morningstar 2-1 in a tiebreaker in the semifinals. It was Howe's third win over Morningstar, with each win coming in the tiebreaker. The wrestlers banged heads in the match and Howe ended up getting stitches on his forehead and wore a bandage in the championship. His parents Mike and Debbie attended every one of his matches this past season. Also making the trek to St. Louis were brothers Jon and Eric, and others like Hanover assistant coach John Willems. "It was special when he won (high school nationals) in Fargo and it was real special when he won the Big Ten championship," said Howe's father, Mike, who wrestled at Miami (Ohio). "This definitely would have been the icing on the cake."
  4. The fans from Northwest Indiana are cheering for you . Bring home a championship for us and all your fans from Hanover Central.
  5. True freshman Howe wins Big Ten title, Badgers place fourth UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. True freshman Andrew Howe won his first Big Ten individual title Sunday afternoon at the 2009 Big Ten Championships in the 165 lbs. weight class. He defeated Ryan Morningstar from Iowa, 2-1 in the tiebreaker to become the Badgers' first Big Ten champion since Tom Clum won at 133 lbs. in 2006. Howe was also awarded Freshman of the Year by the conference. He is the first true freshman under head coach Barry Davis to win a Big Ten title and the first Badger to win Freshman of the Year in the conference since Jeff Walter won in 1992
  6. Who do you think would win the grudge match between Howe & Humphry if they were still at the same weight?
  7. How was the overcrowding on Saturday? Was it worse than previous years with the extra wrestlers on hand?
  8. llinois led 14-7 heading into the break but Howe brought the Badgers within four (14-10) with his win over Smith-Bergsrud. Neither wrestler scored in the first period but Smith-Bergsrud scored first with an escape in the second. Howe evened the score with an escape of his own in the second and accumulated 1:04 of riding time for the win. Howe is now 19-4 overall and still a perfect 10-0 in duals.
  9. Does anyone know the approximate time the finals would start? Would like to avoid the overcrowding.
