  1. Wahoo to you! Here are the top 15 schools with the number of qualifiers they have had in the last 10 years: Mater Dei 86 Lawrence North 62 Mishawaka 59 Portage 58 Bellmont 57 Cathedral 52 Perry 45 Warren Central 38 Merrillville 36 Hobart 36 Franklin 36 Yorktown 35 Bloomington South 35 Crown Point 34 Beech Grove 34 What do all of these schools have in common? They all put the team first! They do what they must to win as a team. Something must be wrong with the system if we should put the individual first. Shouldn't these teams be at the bottom of the list if we put the individual first? What I see that they all have in common is each has / had a very well established coach running the program. Anyone that knows Indiana wrestling can look at the list and name the head coach for that school. BigFan, You kind of made my point though. If these programs all have well established coaches, and these coaches believe in the team aspect, what does that say for coaching just the individual?

  3. bigfan, I agree with you 100% about what you have said. But in doing that 12 months out of the year, you are also helping your team out tremendously. It is your high school head coaches job to build the importance of the team. In the end, if you instill the want and desire of everyone to go win a team state title, then they will do the work for the individual side as well. It is your program leader's job (head coach) to build this. I truly believe if they are not doing this, then they are not doing their job. I think I should restate my stance after reading some of this. I do believe in the importance of individual titles. I would hope there isn't anyone out there who would sacrifice part of their efforts for an individual title. What I am saying is that a team title is more important and that it is your head coaches job to instill that want into everyone on the team to do their job in ensuring that. If you can get all of your team on board to doing the work that it takes to win team titles, then the individual side will take care of itself.
  4. You obviously haven't talked to any of these teams wrestlers. I would put big money that they would easily trade an individual title for a team title.
  5. There is no way 1 great individual can make 14 good kids on a team. First off, it's not his job, it's his coaches, and second off, a great 103 can't help the heavy get better. I will agree that a great individual can help the people around him, but how can you not pull for the team. You don't build a team through individuals, you lose the other kids because they think the coach is playing favorites. What are the schools that year in and year out have kids down at state? Crown Point Mishawaka Cathedral Bellmont Perry Merrillville Lawrence North What do these programs strive for? Team Titles! Sure they love every individual champ they get, but a team title is what they want for their program and their community. I have heard Coach Tonte talk about how he has built his whole program around winning a team title. From Elementary on up. I wonder why they have success year in and year out?
  6. Tell me a school that gets four kids to state on a regular basis that doesn't have a great "Team." Think about that!
  7. It's sad to see so many people putting more weight on an individual title. If that is the case, then your coaches aren't doing their jobs. Your coach is there to build a great program. Great programs aren't made up of 3 or 4 great wrestlers. They are made up of teams of them. Do your job for everyone and don't just focus on a few individuals.
  8. plus manvswild1, you must have attended a school with a poor team if you have that mentality. Build the team first and individual success will follow. And instead of only having one good individual, you will have lots of great individuals.
  9. manvswild1 you are missing the biggest picture. If you care about the team side of wrestling, then you care about every person on the team. If you leave it as individual, you only care about the few. There is nothing better than a team state title. Go ask schools like Mishawaka or Crown Point. Ask them which titles they enjoy more, and I would put a ton of money on the fact that they are more proud of the team title. In fact, go ask Josh Harper, one of our states best, which one he enjoyed more. I'd put big money on the team title.
  10. http://www.flowrestling.org/videos/coverage/view_video/234206-wisconsin-2008-09-preview/76143-howe-is-wrestling-this-year Good luck tonight Andrew!
  11. Well, I'm probably saying adios to my cool points with this one :-[ What is the goal for us as a sport? I truly believe it is to build our numbers and have as many people involved as possible. I know athletes of the school I support are required to wear something with their school on it. Pro Power things do not bother me, but what does bother me are when we are disrespectful to our sport. Cut off shirts, tattered ball caps, coaches who wear jeans to the state finals, are all things that make our sport look unprofessional. I know a lot of people hate it when we compare things to basketball or other sports because "we are the baddest, toughest people in the world." But if we want to start being treated in the same manner that those sports are treated, then we need to start showing a little respect to our own sport. And maybe this shouldn't be under this topic, but bashing other sports constantly is no way to build our sport or our programs. If you want to build something, you need community support, and you can't expect to get that buy always tearing something else down just because it isn't as hard as our sport. And I'll get off my soapbox.
  12. KFC Connoisseur .... The big box meal was the best thing ever invented!
  13. You can't say anyone is a lock at 119. It wasn't too long ago that 119 had two returning state champions in the same weight class and neither placed higher than 5th. I believe it was the year of the little bear that could!
  14. It has lead to some anti-climatic finals, but it has also lead to some phenomenal semi-finals. Who else was there to watch Portage knock Mater Dei off and then watch the two fantastic matches between LN/Portage and Columbia City/Perry Meridian? That round was worth the price of admission in itself!
  15. Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't Yorktown's head coach a State Champ from Delta back in their hay day? I would imagine he wouldn't be too bad of a partner in the room for their big guy.
  16. If you look at who Southmont has lost to, it is Portage, Lowell, and South Vermillion. Lowell beat them worse than Vermillion did and they are a 500 team. Granted, they have a pretty decent schedule, but they aren't deserving of a Top 20 ranking.
  17. I was sitting down and thinking, has anyone ever wrestled a tougher regular season than Cashe has and stayed unbeaten? I am unsure about all of his matches but here are what I know of, feel free to add more onto the list. D'Marcus Spenser (State Qualifier) x2 Brandon Wright (State Champ, State Runner-Up) Jason Tsirtsis (Probably a Multiple State Champ) Frankie Porras (State Runnner-Up) Josh Harper (3x State Champ) Regardless of what happens in the post season, that resume in one year speaks for itself. Purdue is getting someone very special.
