  1. A quicker stalemate call epically from your typical shot sprawl situation, would encourage more offense. What happens now is. Wrestler A waits for wrestler B to take a shot. Sense wrestler A is only worried about stopping a shot it is much harder for wrestler B to finish. So now wrestler A sprawls for 15, 20, or even 30 seconds until he finally is able to get behind for 2. If a quicker stalemate was called in these situations you would have fare less defensive take downs. Which would then in turn encourage more offense!
  2. It would also help if we got quicker on the stalemate calls! I see this at the collage level. I can't stand when the wrestlers are stuck in a non scoring position for 20, 30 or even 40 seconds.
  3. What is worse is when a wrestler runs to the edge then waits for the other guy to take a shot and then tries to counter. Knowing full well that they can more than likely get out of bounds if they get in trouble. I saw one kid get all the way to state doing this.
  4. What weight classes will New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Iowa be using? They are clearly the top states for HS wrestling and I am just curious on the way they are heading on this.
  5. Action is what everyone wants but without changes in the rules. A large portion of high level matches will be won by the defensive wrestler. 1) I also like the rule that if a takedown is started in bounds it counts as a takedown. This would really encourage guys to take chances on the edge.
  6. mtv2112 Almost all arguments have some emotion in them. That is why we argue. Even your argument has emotion in it or you would not use words like this. "When you start worrying about poor little Johnny who only weighs 98 lbs".
  7. Not sure this is a problem with refs not calling stalling but a problem with our scoring system. I think there needs to be a way to reward the more aggressive wrestler. What I see now is defensive wrestlers winning more matches then aggressive wrestlers at the higher levels. I have heard a couple of rule changes that may help. 1) Push out rule 2) Standing the wrestlers up after a reasonable amount of time. 3) possibly giving 2 points for a takedown if it comes from and offensive move and only 1 for a defensive move. Do you guys have any thoughts?
  8. They are not based on emotion. They are based on the fact that if we keep pushing up the lightest weight we will soon have a percentage of kids who have to wrestle up a weight class. Do your realise that if they keep the 2 lb allowance the lowest class will be 108 at the end of the year. That will lead to problems that are now being discussed on other posts. Mainly boys are not big enough so parents decide to red shirt a year. I also am not in favior of getting rid of a middle weight. In fact I would like to see us add one somewhere so that we more evenly disperse some of the middle weights.
  9. All I am saying is that we have a responsibility to make sure there is a weight class for almost every boy that is in HS. Of course you will have fewer guys that fall into the weights on each end. If not we ignore the very spirit of the sport. Put 2 men on the mat of similar size and see who is the best.
  10. I am not saying you are wrong. In fact I said in an earlier post that you can add as many middle weights as you would like. All I am saying is wrestling is the one sport where you can still get respect and be small. If you take that away you will have guys that quit wrestling because they are to small. This happens every year in football. Some of Indiana's greatest wrestlers started out at 98 or 103. I wounder how many NCAA champions at 126 wrestled at least 2 years at 103? I don't think I would mind if this was the first time they raised the lowest weight. This is the second time. It will be 8 lbs higher than where we started. The next it will be more.
  11. Because the 103 lbs freshman is better than everyone else in the school that is his size. The 145 freshman that is better than everyone else his size can do the same. 1) Mitch Slega 3rd in state as freshman 185 2) Auston Neighbarger State placer as a freshman 152 3) Vincent Corsaro State placer 135 I am sure there are many others that make their varsity team and don't make it to State. In your opinion what weight does real wrestling began?
  12. For me it not about going from 103-106. Its about pushing out the smaller wrestlers. We already went from 98-103. Now we are going up again. At some point that has to stop. You of all people should understand that being small does not make you insignificant. I suppose if you want you can have a JV only weight around 100. That way these guys are not wresting much bigger guys. By the way. Many of your top Senior 125-135 pounders were around 100 as freshman.
  13. Yes I do have someone that will more than likely wrestle the lightest weight next year. But the fact is there are several very good wrestlers that are down very close or under 103. If you take away that weight they will have no place to go. There only choice would be to wrestle bigger kids. Everyone else will at least have to option of going up or down. As far as size not being the biggest factor in other major sports you are dead wrong. The highest level athletes all have the combination of size and speed. Desire is far down on the list. If you think desire is above size. You fall in either 1 of 2 categories. 1) Are a division 1 athlete with great size and speed 2) Never competed against a division 1 athlete with great size and speed.
  14. I think we should add another weight between 215 and 285. That way we can see more stalling calls!
  15. Just because you have some forfeits doesn't mean that the 103 weight class is not needed. You take away wresting for the smaller guys and you will see wresting decline greatly. It is not about moving it from 103 to 106. It is about moving it from 98 to 106. What is next. 110, 115, 120? If your argument is you need to go to the average size of say a Junior. You are going to have to go to 125 or 130. Wresting will become just like every other sport. Where size is the most important factor in success. I don't know about the rest of you guys but I love to watch the 103 class. Action, Action, Action!
  16. Add all the weights you want but 108 is way to high. Just look at the # of state placers at 103 that are under weight or just at weight. We already have several guys taking a red shirt year just to be a lagit. 103.
  17. Darren I truly appreciate your input on this subject. You seem to give equal merit to both the boys apprehension and the girls desire to wrestle. This is something that I respect greatly. In the future I will be encouraging my son to put away his ( I am not sure what the appropriate word is here) I want to use the word respect but that would make it not respectful to wrestle so I will just leave that word out. I will say this to him just like I do every other match. " Start fast, keep the pressure on, make her try and keep-up!
  18. This is where I get out of this conversation. I have way to much respect for the struggles that our civil rights leaders had to go threw to bring them down to this level. P.S. I wrote this comment after the post when I ask the question so just forget that.
  19. Let me ask a question. You are out on the street and some strange guy walks up to you and takes a swing. You kick his butt bad. The police and the media show up. A story is run on the 6:00 news. Who is made out to be the bad guy? Same situation but this time the stranger is a lady. She takes a swing. You kick her butt bad. The police and the media show up. The story is run on the 6:00 news. Who is made out to be the bad guy?
  20. This has nothing to do with overconfident boys. For my son it has to do with how you treat girls. He has 2 younger sisters and I have told him several times that he is to protect his sisters at all cost! He has never once pushed, shoved, or raised a finger in anger at them. Believe me when I say that this takes a great deal of self control. He is also supposed to treat all other girls or women as he does his sisters and mother. This is something that is hard to turn off just because you are on a wrestling mat and I am not sure I want him to. Read the book, Raising a modern day Knight and you may understand a little more where we are coming from. I will also say once again that I feel like this is not the problem of the female wrestler. She has every right to comete in the sport. It is just naive to think that in many cases this make the boy very, very uncomfortable.
  21. Just cut and paste the list and Highlight the HS and put it in Red
  22. Lets do it this way. If you know a kid is not in HS next year take him off the list. If you know where he is going add it to the list. 23. My son had to wrestle 1 girl in his career. After that my wife said he will never do that again. He has sense forfeited a few matches. I am not sure what we would do if this would happen at at State. All I know is that it makes us extremely uncomfortable. With that said I would never take away a girls right to compete. It is our problem not theirs.
