  1. The Ukrainian who beat Ware is out, so Ware is done. On the positive side, the guy who beat the Ukrainian to advance to the semi's is Cuban, so that means a better chance to qualify this weight for the Olympics at the Pan Am games. Burroughs vs the Azerbaijani in a few minutes. Dlagnev now wrestling the Uzbek.
  2. Link to Burroughs over the Russian world champ: http://www.themat.tv/2011/09/18/burroughs-knocks-off-world-champ-tsargush/
  3. Burroughs 2-1, 1-0--into the semi's and qualifies U.S. for Olympics at his weight (Howe is smiling while trying to figure out how he's going to stop the blast double)
  4. Dlagnev takes out Olympic bronze medalist from Kazakhstan, 0-1, 1-0, 1-0. He's got 2-time olympic gold medalist from Uzbekistan next in the quarters. The Uzbek also won the silver last year at worlds. Did I mention it before that these draws today are ridiculous? Ukrainian upset world champ from India, so Ware is still alive. But if the Ukrainian goes through, Ware's first match in the repechage will be the world champ. Killer. Burroughs has Venezuela in the quarters. If he makes the semi's, he'll have last year's 5th place Cuban or Azerbaijani who beat out his country's world silver medalist. JB has to be considered the favorite the rest of the way after taking out the world champ.
  5. Awesome! Burroughs takes out the Russian world champ...2-1 in the third.
  6. Dlagnev wins first round 3-0, 4-0 over Kyrgyzstan. Olympic bronze medalist from Kazakhstan next.
  7. Ware, Burroughs, and Dlagnev today. All three got absolutely awful draws, with wrestling superpowers on all sides of them. Ware already lost first round to a Ukrainian. The Ukrainian will have to win 4 matches for Ware to come back into medal contention. It seems like he'll be favored to get to the semi's, then potentially face this bracket's Russian. Dlagnev up shortly. Burroughs got a bye and will wrestle a Ukrainian in the second round. Russian in the round of 16 if he wins. Horrible draw.
  8. Going into the final 3 of the 7 freestyle weight classes, we're tied for 3rd in points. Summary: 4 weight classes, 1 bronze, 2 fifths Again, fifth is good because we automatically qualify that weight for the Olympics. Reece can still bring his weight into play later at other tournaments. Finally, it wasn't mentioned by others, but Michigan St. grad and Reece's ex-college nemesis Franklin Gomez (Puerto Rico) ended up losing the final to the Russian. I watched the match on ESPN3, and the Russian is incredible--ultra quick, strong, composed, balanced, never in true danger. Now 3-time defending world champ. He moved up to Reece's weight at 132 after getting bronze at the Olympics behind Henry Cejudo. It's hard to believe from looking at him that he'd ever wrestle anything below about 150--let alone 121 at the Olympics a few years ago. Reece or Gomez will have to bring something special to take gold from him next year. Can't wait to see Reece keep getting better.
  9. Cael beats a Korean. Still needs wins over a Kazakh, an Iranian, and a Russian for bronze. They're all very, very tough. This side of the draw was insane. Varner needs to beat a Tajik and a Kazakh for bronze. I think Varner was better than the Turk that beat him and these two, so it seems doable.
  10. The Azerbaijani wins and brings Cael back in to the repechage. The turk that beat Varner also wins and and Varner's back in.
  11. Drooke, np. Gomez to the finals! Takes out the Kazakh with a takedown with less than 5 seconds to go in the third! He'll have the Russian world champ that came through Reece's side of the bracket. Whatever the case, it definitely shows that Reece is on the level to do very, very well. He's typically been a better freestyler than Gomez. Here's hoping he can have a run like Gomez next year when Olympic glory is up for grabs.
  12. Varner loses to the host Turkey in the quarters, 1-0, 1-0. He dominated the first period with a couple very near takedowns. He also won the ball draw, but couldn't finish the takedown. Turkey then got the takedown in the second. Now rooting for Turkey in the semi's. The Frenchman who beat Reece lost as expected, which means Hump is officially done. Too bad. Come back stronger next year.
  13. Another note is that the Azerbaijani guy that beat Sanderson made it out of their killer quarter because the world champ got upset early on. He still has to beat the Russian in the semi's, but there's much more of a chance for Cael to get back into medal contention now.
  14. Gomez of MSU/Puerto Rico shocks an Azerbaijani 2-1 in the third period to advance to the semi's. This qualifies P.R for the Olympics, which is good for the U.S. in terms of Olympic qualifying also. Since Reece won't finish in the top 5, the U.S. has to qualify another way next season. One of those ways is the Pan Am games, and Gomez now won't be there to potentially take a U.S. spot.
  15. Dolly also lost, but wow. He almost shocked a Japanese guy. He was up 3-0 in the third period, goes down 4-3, and comes within an eyelash of 2 different push-out attempts in the last 10 seconds.
  16. Reece loses to the French guy. Got inside tripped to his back in the first and lost 4-1. Survived a crazy second 3-3. Went to the horrible, horrible ball draw in the 3rd and the Frenchman won the draw and took him down. He's out unless the French guy upsets the Russian world champ. Gomez is into the quarters for Puerto Rico (opposite side of the draw from Reece). Won't wrestle his quarters match for a little bit yet.
  17. Reece crushin' it. 6-0 first period. Pin in the second over a Tunisian. The Armenian got upset, so he's got a French guy in the quarters. If he wins, he'll have the winner of the 2-time defending world champ Russian and the 2-time defending silver medalist Ukrainian. He'll have to beat one of those 2 in the semi's or the bronze medal match to get a medal. Anyway, France first.
  18. Dolly wins second round 3-0, 6-0 over Macedonia. Front headlock clinic. Now he'll face some competition. Japan in the Round of 16. Russia in the quarters if he wins.
  19. Dang. Sanderson got worked 3-1, 4-1. Came out and got an ankle pick to a double in 8 seconds, then got worked the rest of the match. The Azerbaijani has medalled in the Euro finals a couple times. All the Azerbaijanis are total studs, but I didn't expect Cael to get hammered so badly. His opponent will have to beat the world champ Bulgarian to get Cael back into bronze contention.
  20. Meanwhile, Chael Sonnen's helping with comments/analysis on The Mat's live chat. Interesting.
  21. Cael wins 6-0, 7-0 over a Mexican. As I said, Varner has a bye, so it'll be a few minutes before the second round and Hump has his first match vs. a Mexican as well.
