He has served as a head coach for the 1996 Olympic team and assistant coach for the 2000 Olympic team, and has led numerous other U.S. teams at major international competitions. “Rob and I have worked closely together for 14 years,” said National Greco-Roman Coach Steve Fraser. “He has been a two-time Olympic coach and has coached many of the greatest wrestlers from our country. He will bring to Northern Michigan University his excellent coaching experience which will help the athletes to reach the next level. I am very excited that he will be part of our official USA Wrestling coaching staff.”Hermann will officially assume his duties at Northern Michigan University on August 16. He will work with Willie Madison, who remains the assistant coach for the Greco-Roman program there. “This is one of the toughest decisions I’ve had to make. It is something I have not taken lightly. I am jumping into this with both feet,” said Hermann. “My expectation is not much different than the coaches before me. I will challenge the athletes to be at the top of their age groups, and if I can slide in some Olympic hopefuls, like Adam Wheeler, Harry Lester and Spenser Mango have been, that would be great. I have high expectations.”Hermann has been named as a World Team coach for the 2010 U.S. Greco-Roman World Team, which will compete at the World Wrestling Championships in Moscow, Russia, Sept. 6-12. Hermann served as the head coach of the 1996 U.S. Olympic team, which won three silver medals at the Atlanta Olympic Games. The U.S. team won three silver medals at the Games, from Brandon Paulson (52 kg), Dennis Hall (57 kg) and Matt Ghaffari (130 kg). He was also the assistant coach of the 2000 U.S. Olympic team, which won three medals in the Sydney Olympic Games, including Olympic champion Rulon Gardner (130 kg), silver medalist Matt Lindland (76 kg) and bronze medalist Garrett Lowney (97 kg). He was also head coach of the 1993 U.S. World Team, which was 14th at the World Championships. Hermann also was an assistant coach with the 1994 and 1997 U.S. World Teams. He was the head coach of the 1995 Pan American Games team which placed second. Hermann also served as head coach of the 1990 Pan American Championships team and the 1992 World Cup team. He was also coach of the 1991 and 1995 U.S. CISM World Military teams. Since 1983, he has served the head coach of the All-Navy team, where he has developed a number of nationally ranked athletes. Among the athletes he worked with was 2008 Olympic bronze medalist Adam Wheeler. He was named USA Wrestling Greco-Roman Coach of the Year in both 1992 and 1996. Hermann is a gold certified coach with USA Wrestling’s National Coaches Education Program, the highest level of achievement. As an athlete, Hermann competed on three U.S. World teams and won a bronze medal at the 1983 Pan American Games. He won four U.S. Senior national titles, and competed in five World Cups. During his career, Hermann was a CISM World Military champion, and captured 11 Armed Forces titles. He was named 1984 and 1992 Navy Athlete of the Year. Hermann was a 12-time All-Navy Wrestling champion. He hails from Crystal River, Fla., where he was a 1976 Florida state high school champion. In his military career, Hermann served in the U.S. Navy from 1976 through 1998, when he received an honorable discharge. A major part of his military service included coaching wrestling at the Olympic level. He was a Ship’s Serviceman from 1976-1987. He was converted to Master at Arms in 1987. Hermann served in the Security Department at NAS Pensacola from 1987-1993. He was assigned to NORU Recruiting Command from 1996-1998. He received two Navy Achievement medals and one Navy Accommodation medal while on active duty. “Rob has a great grasp of techniques that all of these young kids coming out of high school will need in Greco-Roman. He has a great sense of the game, with knowledge of what makes wrestlers successful. For many years, he worked with younger athletes through the U.S. Navy program. He also has experience in recruiting, which is an important part of this job. He will help our wrestlers who want to focus on becoming Olympic and World Champions some day,” said Fraser. Hermann becomes the fourth coach in the history of the USOEC Greco-Roman team since its inception, following Gordy Morgan, Ivan Ivanov and Dennis Hall as head coaches for the program. The USOEC program has produced numerous champion athletes for the United States on both the age-group and Senior levels. “I am going to approach it like I did with the Navy. I will teach Greco-Roman, the rules, the techniques and the strategies. I will treat it like my own Olympic team. I will hold them to that standard. I am used to this age group, since my Navy athletes were between 18-24 years old. Working in the college setting will be new to me. I am looking forward to this new challenge. I am very excited. With assistant coach Willie Madison on board, I think we can achieve great things,” said Hermann.

WRESTLING: Castleberry, Jolley-Little win Jeff Classic titlesBy GREG MENGELT 12/22/2013 1:27 AM New Albany 145-pounder and Jeffersonville heavyweight Gavan Jolley-Little each dominated their weight classes en route to Jeff Classic championships on Saturday. Castleberry earned two pins and a technical fall on his way to the championship match at 145 pounds. In the championship, he defeated Bloomington South’s Brennan Barlow 3-1 for the title. The New Albany junior is now 15-0 on the year. Jolley-Little improved to 12-0 with three easy victories and an overtime triumph in the championship match on Saturday. After winning his first match by forfeit, the Red Devils senior pinned Northview’s Brennan Pilman in 1:55 and defeated Male’s Jeremy Fow in 45 seconds. He then defeated Gus Dajani 2-1 in overtime to take the crown. New Washington’s Franklins were both runners-up on the day. Mustang freshman Noah Franklin earned a pin, a major decision and a 9-3 victory en route to the 106-pound title match, where he was beaten by Bloomington South’s Logan Dilbeck 16-6. At 160 pounds, Jacob Franklin earned two pins before beating St. X’s Dominic Lampe 5-4 in the semifinals. Madison’s Jordan Partee took the title, however, with a 12-6 win over the New Wash senior. Behind the Frnaklins’ strong finishes, the Mustangs came in 12th as a team. Stephen Jones and Chase Thompson finished third at 113 and 195 pounds, respectively, for host Jeffersonville, which placed 11th as a team. Thompson pinned New Albany’s Dalton Mowery in 4:28 in the third-place match. Tre Lynch came in third at 152 pounds for the Bulldogs, who were ninth as a team. Charlestown’s Bryant Haynes finished third in the 126-pound class and Josh Hurley was fourth at 220 for the Pirates, who placed 13th. 19. WRESTLING WEDNESDAY: Jolley-Little has set his sights on state title By KEVIN HARRIS 12/18/2013 12:03 AM Gavan Jolley-Little has a simple, yet ***NO NO NO***ious goal for the 2013-14 wrestling season. He wants to be crowned the 285-pound state champion at the IHSAA State Finals in February at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. “I’m very determined. My goal is to be a state champion, not just placing [at state] or qualifying for state,” said the Jeffersonville senior, who is currently ranked fifth in the state in the heavyweight division. “State champ is my goal and I’m not going to be happy if I don’t do that.” Jolley-Little got a taste of what it was like to compete in the state finals last season when he made his first appearance in Indiana’s ultimate high school wrestling tournament. Jolley-Little suffered a first-round loss to Indianapolis Cathedral’s Wesley Bernard in the 285-pound division. The Red Devil standout was pinned at the 3:22 mark. Jeff coach Danny Struck says Jolley-Little is focused on redeeming himself at the state finals this season. “He’s absolutely motivated to do better than he did,” Struck said. “Winning state is a tough thing. I’ve never had a state champion yet. We’ve had a lot of good heavyweights and he’s definitely the most accomplished offseason heavyweight we’ve had. His goal is to be the most accomplished in any season. “I think Jeff High has had two third-place heavyweights. But they’ve never had a heavyweight in the finals and he would like to do that.” Jolley-Little said he got taught lots of valuable lessons about competing at the state finals. He hopes that experience will help him return to state and win it all this year. “I learned not to go out of your comfort zone as much as I would a regular match,” Jolley-Little said. “I learned I had to wrestle to my strengths and not put myself in situations where I’m going to wrestle outside of my strengths.” Jolley-Little says a big factor in his state championship quest is if he can get his knee back to full strength. Jolley-Little tore his lateral collateral ligament and his lateral meniscus in April. He had surgery to repair his knee after he won his division in the FILA Cadet Greco Roman National Championships in May in Akron, Ohio. “I need to get my knee back to 100 percent strength,” Jolley-Little said. “I definitely need to improve my bottom wrestling and in moving my feet.” Before trying to qualify for the state finals, Jolley-Little has several other goals he wants to accomplish in 2013-14. One of them is capturing his first Jeff Classic championship on Saturday. Jolley-Little enters the tournament as the No. 1 seed at 285 with a 7-0 record. He has made three pins this season. “It would mean a lot because last year I was kind of upset at the tournament and lost two matches that I should’ve won. To come back and win it this year would mean a lot,” Jolley-Little said about winning a Jeff Classic title. “I think there will be some pretty good competition. There are two ranked guys besides me [at 285] and I wrestled one of them last weekend and I won. So I feel like I’ve got to get past those two guys if I want to come out on top.” Later in the season, Jolley-Little wants to repeat as the Hoosier Hills Conference heavyweight champion and claim titles in all of the postseason tournaments like sectional, regional and semistate. “An undefeated season is a big one and I’d like to get 30-plus pins,” Jolley-Little said about two additional goals he has for his senior season. Another reason Jolley-Little wants to perform well this season is because his late father expected him to do his best all the time. Jolley-Little’s father passed away on March 11. Since then, Jolley-Little has taken on more responsibility in taking care of his family. “He has kind of become the man of his house,” Struck said. “A lot of times he’ll be taking his brothers to the dentist or his brothers to get their haircuts or to their sports practices. A lot of times, he has them [at practice] with him. They have been like an extended family. I think he has grown up a lot in the last six months.” For the past few seasons, Jolley-Little has prepared himself for the high school campaign by competing in several offseason tournaments. His success in those tournaments has helped him earn All-America honors five times. “It’s just kind of like an extra sense of pride in myself,” Jolley-Little said about being an All-American. “I use it as motivation for the high school season. I use it to get better and as motivation to do better in the high school season as I did in the offseason.” Another offseason event for Jolley-Little was his visit to the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., during the 2013 spring break. Jolley-Little says his offseason wrestling activities is beneficial to him. “It keeps you in shape. It keeps your conditioning up and it keeps you in your skill sets,” Jolley-Little said. “Sometimes when you don’t wrestle for a long period of time, your skills aren’t as sharp as they should be.” Jolley-Little has been getting some interest from college teams. He has talked to two NCAA Division I programs in Indiana and Old Dominion and a pair of Division II schools in Northern Michigan and Indianapolis. Struck thinks Jolley-Little has the potential to persevere at the college level if he keeps working hard. “I think he’s definitely determined to do the best he can at any level,” Struck said.
