  1. Because the student population isn't on the mat sectional Saturday. The varsity wrestler is. These are individuals, not teams. So why do these large school individuals seem more preferable than the small school ones?
  2. Reminder, this is the bet... You get 7x as many wrestlers in your stable. If the 1A wrestlers simply need to work hard enough and that's it, then this is clearly slanted in the 1A selector's favor, unless the person declining the 1A pool feels that the 1A wrestlers, in fact don't work as hard as the 3A wrestlers. If both groups work equally as hard, and a large school wrestler does not have a significant advantage over a small school wrestler, this clearly favors the 1A selector. It would be ludicrous to turn down a bet such as this. Even if the number of 1A varsity wrestlers at sectional is half that of 3A, then the advantage only increases for the 1A selector. Again, unless you think that the 1A wrestlers don't work as hard as the 3A wrestlers, and by a substantial margin.
  3. Why would you select potential state finalists from wrestlers not in the varsity line up?
  4. Are you implying that a program must have a champion to be considered a top program?
  5. Outlier: In statistics, an outlier is an observation point that is distant from other observations.
  6. Thank you. I apologize, I read back through your post but must be numb in the brain and couldn't glean that info. I just like to know how I am compiling the opinions of others.
  7. Thank you, I didn't realize North Montgomery was that size. Have you ever taught at a large school?
  8. Have you ever taught or coached at a small school?
  9. Wow, thank you for posting. This sounds like it could have been taken straight from the mouths of any of us who coached him in High School. What a young man.
  10. It is relevant because you say that (implied: equivalent levels of) success and participation can be built regardless of size using the same basic formula. It would be difficult to ascertain this without experiencing both. Have you ever taught or coached at a small school?
  11. Have you ever taught or coached in a small school?
  12. I think this, like most things should be taken on a case by case basis. It is not uncommon to see two kids with relatively similar leanness and one can easily eat light Friday, wait until after weigh-in Saturday and float a few pounds or more, while the other struggles to lose the same weight even if they try the whole week to get it to come off. Know your (or your son's) body. Listen to it. It will tell you what is best for you (or your son).
  13. I highly doubt anyone who doesn't follow wrestling (or had a champ/runner up from his/her school) has any clue who won any of our 14 weight class tournaments or who won the overall team title a couple Saturdays ago, even though there was only one of each.
  14. So would you be in favor of two classes, 8 qualifiers each?
  15. He has made a few college visits, but is/was waiting to clear nationals before making a final decision.
  16. Hope all those extra visitors are being vetted by your school board or administration...otherwise, that is a violation of IHSAA rules.
  17. So if all of your guys are wrestling Penn guys at the same time, are they at a disadvantage or no?
  18. So you are saying if each of your 14 kids is wrestling an isolated match against a Penn wrestler, they are not at a disadvantage. However, if they are all wrestling at the same time, they are at a disadvantage? Is that a fair summary?
  19. I am going to go a step further and say numbers are an advantage for the team BECAUSE they are an advantage for the individual.
  20. Because those were four of the ten girls on the team. Because winning a state title would have rattled the cages of a lot of other girls roaming the halls who know they are as athletic as some of the girls on that team. Because if numbers continue the way they are, there won't be a track team at all any more. Why does the 1A All-State football team deserve recognition? Why does the Division II college tennis champion deserve recognition? Why does the champion of a small-school conference deserve recognition? Why does eighth place at state (ninth for track) deserve recognition? If you aren't better than EVERYONE then why should you deserve recognition for anything?
  21. Matt came back from 4 down in his quarter final, and won in double OT in his semi final to make his second straight appearance in the NJCAA national championship match at 184lbs. He was runner up last year.
