  1. Fall Clinic flyer will be posted very soon. We are finalizing some things this week-end and will send/post flyer very early next week. Date: Oct. 11-12 Place: Warren Central HS Clinician: Trevel Dlagnev (US Olympian)
  2. It sure is neat to see Kayla Miracle and Mitch Sliga earning the opportunity to wrestle in Baku, Azerbaijan. Best of luck to them both, and I know they will make Indiana and the USA proud. I have wondered over the years what countries like Turkey, Russia, Azerbaijan's youth competition circuit looks like. Do they have "local" tournament circuits like we have across the USA in March, April, May, June or July? If a kid from the USA wanted to make the trip in the off season and wrestle in serious "local/regional" competitions in Europe or the Middle East for a week or two, would they be permitted (and accepted) to do so? I guess I am referring more to Schoolboy, Cadet and Junior age groups. I seem to rememer back in the early 1980's... David Locke of Delta traveled to Sweden (I think) to wrestle in the World Schoolboy Championships. If anyone has any insight, knowledge, or expeience with this, I would enjoy hearing about how to go about pursuing such an overseas venture at the "local/regional" level. CoachMcCormick
  3. Way to go Jacob! You were awesome at this year's Prime Time camp. We have thoroughly enjoyed watching you develop into fine young wrestler. Congrats and best wishes! Coach McCormick
  4. Coach Erikson, Charger.dad and Zachpierson, I want to thank all of you for your positive perspectives on this matter. I agree that USA Wrestling offers many fine opportunities for wrestlers of all ages. I, and my son, left the Disney Duals early last year to head to Utah for the SB nationals which was a wonderful event put on by USA Wrestling. It really comes down to choices and options depending on: 1) time of the year, 2) money and 3) program philosophies. For those wrestlers who choose to participate in the Cadet/Junior Duals or Fargo, I am sure they get a wonderful experience. Those aren't the only games in town anymore though. The AAU Scholastic Duals offer a team atmosphere for wrestlers of all abilities to participate. Yorktown has an enrollment of 780 students. Not all of our wrestlers are ready for competition like the Junior Duals or Fargo. The Disney Duals offers all of our kids (varsity and JV) the opportunity to participate in a folkstyle event as a team. We leave 7 days before the event each year and have a team camp with 2-3 other Florida high schools who are also competing at the Disney Duals. Again, this is a chance for our coaches to work with all of our wrestlers on their strengths and weaknesses. I must give credit to Perry Meridian as we have modeled our pre-AAU Scholastic Duals camp after Perry Meridian as they used to travel to the Naples area for a pre-event camp. In recent years there have been other Indiana high schools such as Ben Davis, Franklin and Westfield that have traveled as a team to Michigan, Pennsylvania and Georgia for summertime team events. I think this is awesome, and I would not dare question these coaches' decision for how they manage their programs. Rather I applaud those coaches and parents who support their wrestler and/or teams in whatever summertime wrestling experience they choose to participate in. Coach McCormick
  5. RegionRoyalty (or whoever you are) - You said it yourself, "you are a fan". I suggest you jump into the coaching ranks. Go take over your own program and then you can have your boys compete wherever you would like to take them based on your philosophies. Who ever said Fargo was the best bang for a kid's buck? Or that Fargo is what every kid in a program is ready for? Certainly you are entitled to your own "fan" opinion, but again, you said it yourself... maybe some of the "top teams" in Indiana have discovered that the AAU Scholastic Duals club event is what is best for their program.
  6. 103 elementary and middle school wrestlers have converged on Yorktown, Indiana for a 4 day residential camp at Yorktown High School. Coach Ed Pendoski did a great job yesterday as the guest clinician for the morning and afternoon sessions. Coach P certainly has a way with kids, and as usual, he did not disappoint. During last night's live session, Coach Dulaney reviewed Coach Pendoski's techniques with the campers and the wrestlers drilled and wrestled live for an hour and a half. Thursday Recognition Morning run winners: Zach Bartosz, Alec Viduya and Jake Henderson Team Kickball winners: The Boilermakers (Coached by Schuyler Phillips) "After Practice" Mr. Hustler recipients: - Morning session - Peter Deaton, Brayden Curtis, Jake Ruberg and Samuel Fair - Afternoon session - Seth Rench, Tyler Reynolds, Jeivan Ross and Cole Long - Night session - Johnny Loos, Eli Pokorney, David Rambo and Max Naselroad "Prize Fight" (Live Takedowns) Winners: - Zach Huse, Corey Shie, Jake Henderson, Derek Bryan, Jeivan Ross, Josh Portillo, Eli Pokorney, Jalen Gutierrez and Adam Brinkman

  11. Updated roter of campers - as of May 20, 2012 Currently 46 campers registered
  12. The steering committee for our 2012 fall coaches' clinic is beginning to plan for next fall's event. In recent months we have had several coaches request to minimize the the number of week days that the clinic falls on due to difficulty getting days off of work. A number of "teacher coaches" have indicated a hardship due to the new state RISE evaluation tool that penalizes teachers for being away from school no matter what the reason. Lay coaches have shared that it is tough for them to take personal days to attend the clinic. The corresponding dates for next fall's clinic would be Thursday-Friday, Oct. 11 and 12. Options: 1. Keep the corresponding dates 2. Go to a a Friday-Saturday format? 3. Go to a Saturday-Sunday format? 4. Go to a one day event (Friday or Saturday)? Thoughts and positive suggestions welcome. Coach McCormick
  13. I don't think we should be paranoid in thinking that "Rule 50" was revisited/emphasized due to the sport of wrestling. As long as individual wrestlers stay at (or under) their 18 scheduled points, I really don't think the IHSAA is going to scrutinize whether a school sent 2 varsity teams out on the same day or a supposed JV team to a varsity competition, etc. We had a "Presidents and Secretaries of Coaches' Associations" meeting at the IHSAA in Indianapolis last week. This meeting is held annually to give the various coaches associations in all sports a heads up as to what is being proposed and/or revisited with regard to IHSAA policies. The big problem that was shared was a baseball situation that has been happening recently. Schools have overbooked baseball schedules knowing that several games typically get rained out each year. School "A" is supposed to go to School "B" to play baseball. School "A" calls School "B" and says, "we haven't had any rain outs, so we can't come and play you or we will be over our scheduling points." It also happened to be School "B"'s senior night, and they aren't very happy about School "A"'s decision. Parents from School "B" start calling the IHSAA office complaining. This didn't set well with the IHSAA so they looked into it. Also in our meeting, there were two other individual sport officers who said their sports routinely send JV to varsity events as well as send 2 to 3 varsity squads out on the same day if that is what it takes to give kids the opportunity to compete. I really think there is a definite distinction between the wrestling scheduling situation (where we are seeking to find equitable competion for our kids) versus the baseball situation (where they are cancelling contests due to overbooking strategies.) Coach McCormick
  14. We have received 2 bids at this point in time from 2 high schools in the greater Indianapolis area who would like to host this event. A third bid packet went out in the mail yesterday to another high school in the Indy area. We expect to select the host school site in the next couple of weeks. Coach McCormick

  18. RegionRoyalty -- Please share your real name with us, so I know what perspective you are coming from. I don't know if you are a head coach, middle school coach or the grandmother of a wrestler. One piece of sound and positive reasoning surrounding our selection of Mr. Creighton has already been offered by MattM. My question to you is, "why not Braumon Creighton?" Many coaches in Indiana have seen the list of Indiana clinicians/wrestlers that you have offered. We may well host a clinic in the future with an "Indiana" slant toward Indiana clinicians as we recognize they have a lot to offer, but we thought it would be productive and refreshing to bring someone new in for our spring clinic. You say it would be "logical" to bring in an Indiana clinician. What would be logical about this at all? This makes me think that indeed you are not a coach at all as you don't seem to understand the importance and necessity of seeking outside perspectives and exploring new technique from other regions of our country. I, personally, look forward to seeing and hearing what Mr. Creighton has to offer. If you (RegionRoyalty) would like to have some positive input into future clinic formats and clinician selections, please share your name and e-mail address with me, and I would be happy to speak with you on the finer points of clinic planning, preparation and logistics. 19. 1. With regard to calling our event a "championship event", I have an e-mail from Mr. Faulkens saying that it is okay for the IHSWCA to call this the "IHSWCA Classed Team State Duals Championships." 2. Awards for IHSWCA Classed Team State Duals Event - Team Trophy awarded to top 3 teams in each class. - Championship banner to the 1st place team. - Individual Awards to each wrestler on top 2 teams (30 issued) - Certificate of participation (or similar award) for all participants in this event. - 1 Outstanding Wrestler Award presented in EACH class (voted on by coaches and IHSWCA committee) 3. "How will this help our fight for dual team state, class team state with the IHSAA?" -- bharmon01 I guess my thought on this is that we already lost the fight for an IHSAA sponsored dual team state. The IHSAA has made it clear that they view wrestling as an individual sport, so we will not be considered for an IHSAA class "team" state event. The IHSWCA is trying to fill the "dual team atmosphere" void left in our wrestling community by sponsoring a team state duals event that the IHSAA has also cleared to be held as a classed event. I realize, as posted on the messageboard, that some people may, or may not, recognize the IHSWCA's event as an Indiana team championship event. I guess I would say that the beauty is in the eye of the beholder. No one is being forced to come to the event. We think there will be some great competition with different size schools being represented from across the state. This will be a celebration of wrestling at all levels. If people want to be a part of it as a participant, or as a fan, then come to the event and enjoy... if someone doesn't think it is a worthwhile event, then simply don't come to the event. The IHSWCA feels that having something in place is better than having nothing in place with regard to a Team State Duals event. 4. Future plans of attack. Individual sports' (including wrestling) proposals fall on the odd years. Next year is 2013, so wrestling, and all of the other individually labeled sports, will make proposals to the IHSAA. a. Team State topic --- this has already been decided with the IHSAA dropping the Team State Duals. The IHSWCA is hosting a team duals classed event to, in essence, replace the dropped IHSAA team state event. b. Wrestle backs --- the IHSAA has made it clear that for reasons such as time constraints, they are not in favor of wrestle- backs. I doubt wrestlebacks will be proposed in 2013. c. Class wrestling -- again, the IHSAA has made it clear that wrestling is categorized as an individual sport in Indiana. They are not going to "class" an individual sport. We carried out a survey at the sectionals this year that asked for coaches' feedback on several rule changes and their feelings on the new weight classes. I would say further discussion will take place in these areas as we look to make proposals next year. Coach McCormick
