  1. Freestyle 57kg Spencer Lee looked amazing in his Olympic debut, and will wrestle Higuchi for gold. The Japanese grappler will represent Lee's biggest challenge by far, but Lee is showing his class so far. He even tried using his vicious armbar, which pleased Jordan Burroughs during his broadcast. 86kg Brooks dropped his match in the semis in the last seconds in incredibly disappointing fashion. I'm sure that one is going to eat at him for a while. Hope he goes after Bronze with the same fury he showed in the quarters and semi. He showed he is right there with the best in the world. 57kg Maroulis looked a little outmatched in her semis match against Sakurai of Japan and will go for Bronze tomorrow. She won 2 tough matches before losing and earned that shot at another medal. All in all, a really strong showing by the US freestyle teams
  2. Unbelievable Sarah Hildebrandt looked the best I can ever remember seeing her. Her defense generally and rubber leg specifically were incredible. Vinesh would've been a tougher opponent most likely, but nothing I saw at this weight makes me doubt Hildy would've prevailed against the Indiana wrestler. Congratulations and welcome to the Indiana record books...again!
  3. I won't question your bonafides, but are you saying Viktor Nemes is a cheat too? You mentioned Serbia in your accusations, so is it all Serbian wrestlers, or just Micic? You also acknowledge home cooking is common for host countries but seem to have a special dislike for Serbia and Micic. I've been watching Micic since he was barely a teen, too, and he's had weight cut challenges but that is incredibly common and people do have exceptional camps in preparation at points in their careers as well. If he benefitted from home hijinx at Worlds, that sucks, but every event has its oddities. Micic has always been a badass and it's crazy to think he's lying about an injury. I respect your opinion and I respect you not making it personal
  4. Elor went down almost 10 lbs and still boat-raced the entire field. If she can stay healthy...Hard to imagine her potential ceiling. 20 years old!!!
  5. No offense, but it sounds like sour grapes a little bit. If there was a shred of evidence that Serbia and/or Micic cheated last year, he would be stripped of his gold. Serbia doesn't have some kind of sinister control over international wrestling. Micic is a good sport, a true sportsman, he's not going to intentionally deny someone else a spot in the Olympics unless he's injured. It sounds like you know some people who participated in the world Championships last year, but don't present rumor as fact without evidence.
  6. Not too sure about shenanigans, but Micic is the reigning 57kg world Champ. He earned his way there and it's unlikely that whichever person would've replaced him would be a medal threat. It's disappointing on many levels, but Micic doesn't deserve any flak for getting injured training for the biggest stage in the world.
  7. https://www.themat.com/news/2024/august/04/international-journalists-make-picks-of-the-wrestling-champions-at-the-olympic-games-in-paris I have to admit...these are some of the worst picks I've ever made. I honestly can't recall what I was thinking in not picking Elor and Lopez. How about the USA women? Two finalists in the first 2 weights competed? Hildy going for that elusive gold? Can't wait.
  8. Womens Freestyle Amit Elor looks like a superstar. She has dominated all opponents and appears to have what it takes to win gold against KGZ. Greco Mijain Lopez of Cuba is favored to win his 5th gold medal at 130 kg. More dominant than Karelin? He has to beat the guy (Yasmani Fernandez of Chile) who immigrated out of Cuba because he couldn't beat Mijain Lopez. Fumita of Japan gets vengeance against 2023 World Champ Sharshenbekov of KGZ at 60 kg, will wrestle for gold later against China. Off to an exciting start, but still bummed by the Micic injury. Might end up helping Spencer Lee, if there's a bright side to it.
  9. Very, very sad to hear he won't be able to compete this week. He had a great shot at a medal and 4 years is a long time to wait for another crack at it.
  10. I worked with him years ago and he's a very cool person. Even being a little older, he was still in good shape and you wouldn't have guessed he was a 98 lber. Sorry to hear he's having a hard time and I wish him the best.
  11. It's always true that the draw matters. For a variety of reasons, but especially if there's an opponent who is a bad match up for your wrestler getting knocked out before you have to face them. So many times that path to the finals makes a big difference in who makes it to the gold medal match. I feel like all of our gents can potentially beat nearly every opponent in each's respective weight class. Obviously it's very unlikely they will each beat every opponent but as Maligned said, the floor is high with this sextet. No one is a gold favorite, again mentioned by Maligned, but they are all capable of gold or silver, in my opinion. Lee and Dake would be my favorites to win it all, but Parris, Retherford, Snyder and Brooks are SOOO good too. Having 6 weight classes just creates a surfeit of talent at each weight. In this case, the end result is a loaded US team. I can't wait for this to start. There is nothing like the Olympics. Hope Kayla and Sarah bring home some hardware. Pretty crazy that one out of every 4 wrestlers on the men's and women's teams is a Hoosier. Very nearly 1 out of 3 wrestlers from Indiana if Nick Lee beat Zain.
  12. VERY impressed by both of them. Lee was dominant except against the guy from China. Rutherford had to win 4 matches this morning to storm through repechage. Both have good medal chances. The whole men's team seems very, very capable of doing serious damage in Paris.
  13. Feels weird not seeing a Rooks in the IU lineup. They both had nice careers and were generally very reliable. Graham really turned it on later in his IU career. It's improbable for either state school to ever get a topnotch recruiting class. Money, the high talent level in topnotch programs' 'rooms', exposure...there isn't a lot of incentive to snub the big boys in favor of IU or Purdue, even if you're an Indiana native. IU and Purdue aren't getting our state's elite level recruits, which I realize isn't a new thing, but imagine if Angel Escobedo was a senior in HS right now. I highly doubt he hitches his wagon to IU in that scenario. I know I'm preaching to the choir--all of us Indiana/PU wrestling fans would love to field stronger teams, ideally with a majority of the very best high school guys from Indiana. Interesting to see if Taylor's hire impacts Carroll's performance next season. I could see the room at OSU overflowing with topnotch senior level talent in the next few years and steel sharpens steel.
  14. I know this isn't breaking news anymore, but I'm still stunned by this, mainly for Coleman Scott's sake. The timing of things is what really throws me. Scott had a very nice run at UNC, and one has to assume he thought he was next in line for the Pokes' head position. You can't fault OSU for bringing in someone who will move the needle, but the cautious part of my brain points out that great wrestlers don't always make great coaches. I think Taylor will succeed because of his massive appeal and recruiting success, kind of like when Brands was brought in to replace Zalesky at Iowa. Brands brought in Metcalf and other highly sought after recruits and revitalized an Iowa program that was stale at the time. Regarding Coleman Scott, it's pretty clear he'd make an excellent coach at most big programs. I wonder where his mind is right now.
  15. Hey there. Just wanted to let everyone know why I was MIA today. I had a health scare last night and I was unable to make it today. Pretty big bummer, but I'm heading home early today. Thanks for those of you who experienced this with me and it looks like we have a great shot at having 3 Indiana Olympians, which is absolutely incredible. I'm sad about Nick Lee but still a phenomenal showing by him. Mendez and Carroll both showed up and got some big scalps. I'll be rooting from afar for our 3 to finish the deal tonight.
  16. Thanks for the pic and the clarification. Good call, Valencia lost fair and square.
  17. Valencia's length helping him fend off Brooks. BIG blast double by Brooks, but the referee bumps into Valencia as he attempted to fight off the attack. Not sure what the rules are on this, but Valencia's corner threw the brick. Changed to a stepout. 1-1 with a minute gone in the period. Brooks in deep again, Valencia tries to whizzer his way out, 2 for Brooks. 3-1 now. Valencia WITH A HUGE feet to back, gets a 4 pointer and takes the lead 5-3. Valencia pumping his fists and working the partisan PSU crowd up into a lather. 4 pointer confirmed, plus the point for the failed challenged. 6-3 Valencia with a solid lead, but we know Brooks is a champion and he beat Valencia last time out. Valencia doing a good job of using up time, just 45 secs for Brooks to do something....Valencia with a quick, slick single, Brooks defends, but less than 30 seconds and Brooks needs some quick scores. Gets a slideby after a headlock, cuts it to 6-5. The stepout for Brooks ties it at 6-6 but Valencia has criteria....penalty point of some kind (sorry I was typing), makes it 7-6 in favor of Brooks. Not sure I love how that ended, but great match and an impressive win for Brooks. See you all tomorrow!
  18. Last match and it's a doozy. Valencia and the home favorite Aaron Brooks for a spot in the best of 3 with the winner to get the pleasure of facing the Unicorn, David Taylor. No score first minute. Heavy hands, Brooks hard on Valencia's head. They seem to be physically evenly matched. Passivity warning on Valencia, super slick duck under, but Brooks sprawls it out. No score for either guy. They are locking up with intensity, Valencia gets a point for Brooks' passivity. Brooks nearly gets a TD on the edge, Valencia whizzers out. 1-0 Valencia to start the 2nd.
  19. Winchester up 3-0 in the 2nd. Hedrick with a near-4 pointer on the edge of the mat, makes it 3-2 Winchester. Hedrick running out of time.....Winchester wins 4-2, will face Maroulis tomorrow for a spot. Kilty up 4-3 on Page. Kilty immediately jumps in on Page's legs, Page is able to turn Kilty, but Kilty reverses, making it 6-5 Kilty. 90 secs left, could be a barn burner. 9-8 Kilty with 1 second left...Kilty wins will face Miracle for an Olympic berth. Tough matchup.
  20. Jen Page and Macey Kilty at 62kg for the women. Hedrick and Winchester at 57kg
  21. Big scramble leads to a TD for Zillmer on the edge. Gets another stepout, wins it 5-1. Another nice senior level win for Zillmer. Will face our very own Mason Parris for the HWT spot in men's freestyle
  22. Mayoked survives the 1st period. Blades ends it pretty quickly in the 2nd. 11-0 final, nearly pins her. Zillmer and Gwiz just unable to do much with each other. Gwiz gets a passivity point, ties it 1-1, criteria with Gwiz.
