SOUTH DEARBORN KNIGHTS' CLASSIC--JANUARY 19, 2019
South Dearborn still has at least two openings for teams in the Knights' Classic to be held on January 19, 2019. This will be an eight-man double-elimination tournament bracket. The weekend of this has moved due to our conference meet moving a week earlier, so we are still looking for two varsity or quality JV teams to fill out this tournament. Please contact athletic director Ryan Walston at ryan.walston@sdcsc.k12.in.us or head coach George Gardner at george.gardner@sdcsc.k12.in.us for further information.

May Jim's soul be rejoicing with our Heavenly Father. May the reward of a life well lived be that he has now seen the face of God and knows Him as only one can in eternity. Jim was simply and definitively a fine man.

I have also noticed some errors on some of the far right columns on the Alpha Master Report. Some of the weights listed seem to be actual weight entries while others seem to simply be a weight class. However, I had a heavyweight who has never been close to 220 listed as having 220 as his lowest January weight. When I went back later, it was different. Likewise, one of the listed wrestlers with a lowest January weight listed actually has a weight that was from December instead of January. I still have some N/A entries as well. I am not sure why these continue to change and adjust.
I would be most concerned with making certain that the report lists the required number of qualifying weigh-ins as well as listing the correct scratch weight class for a wrestler. The last column is interesting, but it also does not play a bearing on anything except to ensure that a wrestler has had a qualifying January weigh-in. Therefore, the only thing that concerns me from this column is to determine why someone who has a January weigh-in does not show in this column.

Thank you, BeastMode for the compliments to our wrestlers. Garrett Walton had a remarkable freshman season for us. He probably didn't weigh in last Saturday above 110. He didn't cut all year at 106, but worked hard to get bigger knowing the change was coming. He is a kid that just keeps coming for six minutes. Cainan wrestled up almost the entire season to help us be a stronger team. Both of his losses came at that weight class. Certainly his willingness to wrestle up helped him and our team. It has been a fun and rewarding season for our program. We took nine to semi-state, which is our most ever. We are looking forward to this weekend. Good luck, Cainan.

With our school renovation 10 years ago, South Dearborn holds two full mats. We have 18 circles, an office, and a bit of space off the edge of the mats for additional activity, as well as a large storage closet. We were encouraged to give architects our design of the square footage, and although we have a fantastic room compared to pre-2005, had the architect taken our suggestions for the office design and a water fountain in the room, it would be superb. We also wanted to convert a large storage area in the gym into a locker room that would have opened straight into the room. Ultimately, it is better than most schools, so we love it.
I believe Batesville still practices in the same room I did. It holds either 4.5 or 5.5 sections. It probably still has one wall that is all mirrors from when half of the space used to serve as the weight room. It essentially has no coaches' office, just a closet that sometimes serves as such.

This discussion has been interesting to read, partly from my perspective as an English teacher. Many are saying to "error on the side of caution," and I would just like to say that they should "err on the side of caution."
Now with my teacher hat placed back on the hook, I will say that, as a coach, it is difficult to always resign yourself to the ref's opinion when you and your wrestler do all things right with a note. Granted that they must make the judgment as to the appearance at that moment and not three days prior; however, also being an official, I know there is no true and thorough instruction in diagnosing a skin condition in order to become licensed. While realizing that most officials have likely been around the sport enough years to know a lot of the skin diseases, it is still something that might make coaches more at ease with decisions knowing the official has been given some sort of training in the matter.

My sincere condolences to Cody's family and friends. I had not heard anything about this until this morning, but never is it too late to express such sentiments. I know the Day family has been a tremendous influence in and part of the Connersville wrestling program for many years. He was always a competitor either on the football field or the wrestling mat. I always enjoy saying hello to his dad Mike at meets and all of his kids were/are solid wrestlers. However, nothing can measure the hurt that the Day family must be experiencing over the loss of their son/brother. May God be with you all and offer you His wonderful Mercy and Grace to help you through these trying times. May your strength in Him be the support you turn to as it is shown in the embodiment of your many family and friends that surround you with love.
Chase, may you find healing and strength as well in your recovery. I hope that your road to recovery is met with great support and love. I hope that you are able to come through this with much resolve and courage. May God be with you.
Sincerely,
Chris Nobbe

The banner was great to see and certainly added to the pageantry of the event. I hope things like this will be encouraged, as I feel it was a classy move. Great job, Madison Wrestling. It certainly caught my eye during the event.
On the other hand, I was disappointed that some teams did not get the chance to complete the walk before the national anthem was introduced and performed.
On a final note, I would like to see the order of introductions be switched up from year to year to allow teams like Zionsville or others in the back of the alphabet to enjoy the experience a bit more than is afforded to them.

MATCAT and bigmak: It often makes me wonder why people chime in on things that they truly have so little to no information about. The situation at 138 pounds was a coaching decision by a very well respected coach and his staff. First off, this is called an injury default and not a forfeit. Secondly, the rules do explicitly allow this. Third, the wrestler in question has had an injury almost all season and only came into the sectional with ten total matches. Finally, after weigh-ins we made certain to inform the officials, the tournament director, and Coach Deters of the decision so that all would know what was going to take place. Our own wrestler was also aware of the decision prior to the start of the meet. It was a decision made by the SD staff as a decision that was best for the sake of our wrestler, and I will stand by this decision without hesitation.
It befuddles me as to how you feel this move resulted in us winning the sectional title. I would love to hear the explanation for this. We gave an injury default to a Franklin County wrestler. This allowed them to score maximum points for that match of 2 advancement points, 3 guaranteed place points, and 2 bonus points for the injury default. How does giving Franklin County an automatic seven points result in South Dearborn doing this for team points? I would like to know how "everyone knew why" we did this? Did they think we did this in an attempt to lose the sectional, or might there truly have been reasoning behind the coaching decision to do this while still offering 7 team points to Franklin County? If the South Dearborn wrestler had wrestled and the Franklin County wrestler had only won by decision or even a major decision, the team score difference at the end of the day would have been either five or six instead of four. Are you starting to understand why your logic in this makes no sense?
MATCAT: Unfortunately, what you do know about the situation is almost entirely false. Coaches make decisions every day that are best for their teams. When you state that we did this to win a sectional title, yet we give Franklin County the maximum points, it just does not make sense. Maybe, just maybe, we did do this for the safety of the wrestler and his injury situation.
bigmak: "Fact!" Honestly? The fact is that we as a coaching staff do what is best for our team and our wrestlers. We broke no rules and South Dearborn Wrestling does things with integrity. I don't think you will find a coach in that tournament or even any this area of the state (and quite possibly the entire state) who would say that South Dearborn and Coach Gardner do things in an underhanded way. Coach Gardner has headed this program for over a quarter of a century and is well respected among his peers. It is an honor to be on his staff and associated with his program.
I do not state my response as a personal attack but rather as explanation to a degree that I am comfortable to share. Every detail does not need to be known or discussed on an open forum. I do wish that both of you would be more concrete in your reasoning instead of making assumptions and conjecture. Thank you for considering my point of view. I hope this will put to rest some of your concerns.

***kid went to his back and then the kid bit him. LOL, geez***
This is the part of the post that I took exception to. Yes, the SD wrestler was disqualified for an apparent bite. There was one set of teeth marks on the FC wrestler's arm. I am not going to disparage either kid in this. The decision was made on the mat at the time. Coaches understand the circumstances that occurred postwith. Other than that, your comment did seem to come off as indicating the SD wrestler bit him out of frustration or something similar due to being beaten in the match. That is not the case. Please do not presume that to be the case, either. We as coaches are working to help young wrestlers (on either team) be much more than wrestlers, and such was the case in this instance.

The match at 138 did not occur quite as described. Please do not make it appear as if the SD wrestler was out of control and bit anyone. You may not have been privy to exactly what transpired out on the mat. Thank you.

I noted several written changes to the brackets, which often happens at the coaches' meeting due to missed weights, illness, etc. However, if the changes were accurate, the one thing that concerns me about the brackets (both original and changed) is that a few weight classes had forfeits extending into the second round of consolations. This, while others in the weight class are out after the first round of consolations. I would hope that every effort is made to ensure that an actual wrestler extends farther in a tournament than a forfeit. A blind draw is one thing that makes the Spartan Classic unique, but this simple surety could enhance this format, in my opinion.

We are very proud of Blake's accomplishments. He finished 3rd at sectional (House-1/Feller-2), 3rd at regional (Feller-1/House-2), 4th at semi-state (Corsaro-1/Feller-2/Tatom-3), and ultimately 3rd at state. (All four New Castle SS placers placed at state.) Blake had a great tournament run overall. He continued to improve as the weeks went on, and he continues to wrestle throughout his entire matches. He has an exciting style of wrestling as well. With all that being said, I think Coach Gardner, and certainly I, would say that we at South Dearborn are even more proud of the maturity and growth Blake has shown over the course of the season. His progress toward becoming a solid, y0ung man who understands our expectations and hopes for the kids that come from the program has been great to witness. Congratulations, Blake!
