  2. Congrats to Bobby Howard. Lowell High Schools new Head Wrestling Coach. I have stepped down to Assistant Coach for Bobby as I have taken a new job in our school corporation that is taking much more of my time. Bobby was a state champion for Lowell in 2000 and was one of my assistants for the last 3 years. He is a standup guy and I'm excited for him to lead our Red Devils! Joe Willmann

  7. AJ- I'm sure that that could be a possibility. Although I would be even more in favor for seeding the top 8 and drawing in the rest for each bracket. Karl- I'm not the person to answer that question for the IHSWCA, but I would think that would be the opinion of most coaches. (At least I hope it would be)
  8. I thought about your question AJ. I'm not sure how that could be factored in. I don't think it could be. There are really three options to do this tournament, and the format I chose to represent was the best overall. The first option was to have everyone in the tournament and wrestle it out. This really isn't a possibility though. Since we can't go after the season (and who would want to be wrestling until March 20) the only two other times we could do it is during the season (which there is no way we could fit two weeks of a team state in during the year, plus there isn't any way the IHSAA is going to grant releases to every single school during the season to go over their points), or during the state tournament series (which the IHSAA would never let happen.) The second option was to have a group of people just select the tournament. While I would trust the people that were put in charge of this, it would become similar to the BCS where if you were a bubble team and didn't get selected, all we would hear about is how unfair that system was. So I nixed that idea. I finally came up with the third option which puts a premium on returning talent. The only flaw in this system would be the year that you have 9 or 10 seniors on your team. I still feel that it is the lesser of all evils as you earn your way into the tournament by returning talent. It obviously could be tweeked and changed. Ohio only looks at the equivalent of our semi state tournament for their series. I didn't feel that was fair in Indiana as we do not have class wrestling for individuals. It could really hinder the smaller schools if that was the only level we looked at.
  9. If we must go to a coaches trophy for our team tournament, I would vote that we would go to a format similar to Ohio, in which you look at the performances of the previous years returners on your team. I would vote for the top 4 large schools and the top 4 small schools advance from each semi-state to the next years IHSWCA state tournament. That way there is a chance for each regional to be represented at the state tournament, and regionals who have two great teams could both advance. I would award points in this fashion. 2 points for returning regional qualifiers, 4 points for returning semi-state qualifiers, and 2 points for returning state qualifiers. The reason semi-state is weighted more is because I believe it is the level of the tournament that shows most teams strengths. If you look at this years teams from the Merrillville Semi-State, Penn and Crown Point both had 14 wrestlers advance. These were the cream of the crop for the tournament. I would say this is a fair system and similar to the point structure of Ohio. The tournament would be held the week before sectionals, so we would move our state tournament back one week. It could be held at two sites, such as Franklin and Center Grove. 1 match held Friday night and the other three held on Saturday. If this were in place next year this is how the Merrillville Semi-State would be represented at the tournament. 17. At the risk of hi-jacking this thread: I have the debate with my coaching staff all the time about class wrestling. I make no bones about it that I am a supporter of class wrestling at every level. I will not sit here and mock anyone who has an opinion otherwise. That is why it is an opinion. You are allowed to have it. As a wrestling community, we have the greatest spectacle for any state tournament. Shut off the lights and have two wrestlers battle for a state title. It is amazing. It's my favorite weekend of the year. Would going to class wrestling at every level, team and individual ruin the spectacle of our state tournament? Yes. There is no way we could have as amazing of an individual tournament with three matches going at once, or even just two. It just wouldn't happen. I'm not afraid to admit that. Would it water down the level of competition at our state tournament? Probably. Having said those things: Would the depth of overall wrestling in our state (outside of the state tournament) be better? More than likely. Would our studs in Indiana still be studs? Yes (You can't tell me that Jason Tsirtsis would be less of a wrestler if he won in a class system.) Having more opportunity for our wrestlers to succeed is only going to grow our sport. Would it be at our expense as fans, yes. The aura of the state wrestling tournament would never be the same. You can't replicate one match under the lights in front of 10,000 fans. I would be willing to give that up if our sport grew. We have to accept that having class wrestling helps several states. The states that do very well at NCAA's are states that have class wrestling. Most people will bring up the argument that they are much larger states than we are. If that is the case, then why is California (everyone's go to point as the largest state with 1 class) not killing everyone in NCAA qualifiers? The top two states for NCAA qualifiers last year were PA and OH. Both of which have class wrestling. They are considerably larger than Indiana, both almost doubling our population. California though has about 12,000,000 more people than PA and OH combined. So what is the difference? Again, I have nothing the gain here. I coach at a 4A high school that is larger than most schools in the state. We aren't a huge high school, with about 1300 kids, but we aren't the same size as everyone else. I will be fine whatever we decide. I just think that class wrestling is the best thing that could happen to our sport in this state, even if it does take away from how amazing our state tournament is.
