  1. Not if they already have a varsity position, from what I hear.....
  2. you are correct, and they typically set a mean and have a standard deviation. but the argument I'm defending is that the priorities are different, which in turn makes Super_Fan's point that it doesn't improve the quality.
  3. Last time I checked statistics are still a maybe and not definite. It is apples to oranges you are running. The priorities and focuses are different from large schools to small schools. Just the focus from large school to large school is different.
  4. I think it is a great argument. Those kids know they are the best of their weight in their class. Are you saying that elite athletes in those states don't want to be the best of the best.
  5. Not all kids go to college and a high school experience might be the highlight in their life and that silly spotlight.
  6. You ask why I am not in favor of classing........My answer is that we have what most do not have. We have a system that finds the best of the best. We have a product that we can brand, not only to colleges but to kids. Wrestling is one of those sports that teaches you get what you put forth. If you don't get what you want, you push yourself harder if you want more. Is there a benefit to being at a larger school? Maybe, if a program is set up and tons other reasons that have been stated. A larger size of school might impact numbers and quality to the good, but they can also hurt those numbers. To me the fight isn't class wrestling but on how to improve the wrestling in Indiana to stay in that top 10 and improve toward the state with the best wrestling. Growth starts at the little kid level by introducing as many little kids to wrestling as possible. 8. Great article about injury and sports......multi-sports vs. individualizing in 1 sport http://sports.yahoo.com/news/three-benefits-being-young-multi-173014244.html;_ylt=A0LEV016u_lUL2cATopXNyoA;_ylu=X3oDMTEzcXNudGdhBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwM1BHZ0aWQDVklQNTY0XzEEc2VjA3Ny
  9. don't forget the DNA sample, urine sample for drug testing and gender verification.
  10. I'm going with the multi-sport kid. There is a lot of new data coming out about increased injuries with kids focusing on 1 sport. This is happening because of the same movement and stress on the same areas of the body!!!!!!
  11. First off, most if not all those states have been classed for a while. If Indiana did class it would be interesting, now that there is open enrollment these days. I just see many other things that can be done with just as much energy to improve the sport. Like I said before, if we would come together as coaches, parents and wrestlers to get more tournaments, more RTC's and better off season wrestling programs by helping each other. I feel this would do a better job of creating a more powerful sport through numbers, creating better wrestling and improving the coaching power with ISHAA.
  12. I thought this was done a few days before and you could list alternates. At sectionals you can only use the alternates and not add kids at that time if I am remembering correctly.
  13. Why did Alaska, Colorado, Oregon and Washington legalize marijuana. A bunch of people "worked" together on a common goal and made it happen. With this situation you are missing the common goal.........not everyone agrees about classing
  14. Hey I have it solved. Lets use a handicap score for wrestlers to even things. The kids with less experience gain a point for every year they have less experience, than if they compete in multiple sports they get extra points for how many they play, and if they come from a small school add 2 points for 2a and 4 points for 1a. Problem solved.
  15. Am I correct by saying you left a smaller school to go coach at a bigger one.
  16. One part that I haven't seen brought up is that programs are built from the ground up. You are not going to recruit a bunch of High School kids to wrestle (who never have) and take them to state. I personally don't think, unless they are an anomaly, that this should happen. It is getting tougher to get kids from middle school to state. There is a huge difference between the top 8 kids to the top 16 and even more so after that. The problem isn't (at this time) increasing wrestling numbers at state, but talent that separates them. How many weight classes this year couldn't be figured down to the top 4. Maybe 3-4? The other thing the states that everyone keeps talking about have that we don't are stellar kid programs. Most do elementary meets, tons of off season wrestling and work as a community. Most of us agree on it will take an act of God to get things changed with ISHAA, that there will always be things we disagree on, and that we all have a love for this sport. CLOSE THIS POST AND START A NEW ONE WITH HOW WE CAN HELP EACH OTHER GROW THE SPORT WITHIN OUR CONTROL!!!!!!!!!
  17. Well luck for all of us now, because it has changed so much. Being sarcastic of course, why fix whats broken just break more.
  18. I can only speak from my view and from what I have experienced. My senior 92' we (warsaw) didn't field a full team and the quality was pretty good a couple multi-state placers (Aaron Wilson, Derrick Crousore)and a few other decent kids (didn't seem to build our numbers much). If I remember we were missing 3-4 weight classes. We didn't win sectionals, but won regional because the few kids we had were good kids. My intentions when I started coaching (8-9 years ago) was to build a kids club, because I didn't want my son to have that same experience. When I started coaching they couldn't find a coach for the middle school so I started helping there on top of kids club. 2 years later they couldn't find a coach to coach the High school (they had a few pretty good kids at the time). So now in the 3rd year till now I'm coaching High School, on and off at Middle School (depending if they can find a coach for that year) and coaching kids club. I don't have the answers and even if I did, from the sounds of things we can't get passed ourselves to organize enough to go up higher with sound ideas and even if we did it sounds like no one is willing to listening.
  19. It is not the only judge of a "good program" and before you ask or a "great program", but it sure doesn't hurt. The quality is hurt because we argue about classing year after year, instead of spending that time improving/helping each other to succeed. For example help other programs run successful tournaments instead of saying just do it or help set up RTC's in 30-40 range of others. Just an idea.
  20. What you don't recognize is now we have a promotional product, because we can say we only allow the best of the best (LOL if there were wrestle backs) so almost the best of the best.

  22. I don't know you tell me.....Penn last state champ was when and how big are they. Or are they an outlier
  23. Possibly less than 3a, but not a question for me. I have enough of my own problems trying to build a 3a program over the last 8-9 years. I can only imagine how hard it is to get kids to come out, let alone help with coaching. There is probably plenty of people saying how things can be done, but don't help out (I know we get plenty of that). Schools like Triton seem to be doing a good job. Maybe call them and ask! I was just giving my thoughts and I didn't mean to hurt your feelings, which I'm guessing I did with your condescending answer/question. This is the second time you asked a question trying to bait me in a statement that had nothing to do with the direction of my response.
  24. Didn't we already try making tournaments mandatory. It isn't like this is a new concept. This concept was in affect during the last 10 years (at least), up to a few years ago.
  25. I have now seen 3 or so 1a people that do not seem to have a problem with the non-classed system. I think the problem is more of difference of priorities. In 3a (bigger schools) kids individualize themselves by being standouts in specific sports. In small schools the focus is on filling all sports and being "the man or woman" that can be the best in a team concept on multiple sports. I truly think that a program can be built in any size school, but starts with a kids club (also might depend on the "recruiting" schools around you.
