Capital City Classic

INDIANAPOLIS --  The Columbus North wrestling team opened the season Saturday (Nov. 17) with a fifth-place finish in the annual Capital City Classic, this year hosted by Perry Meridian.

    Top-ranked Perry Meridian captured the championship with 309 points. No. 13 Warren Central placed second with 251, followed by Franklin Central (208 1/2), Jeffersonville (171), Columbus North (109), Beech Grove (102), Bloomington North (85) and Speedway (11).

    Junior Luke Teague led the Bull Dogs with a second-place finish at 182 pounds.

    Sophomore Brandon Woods took third at 220. Junior Evan Speaker (106) and junior Kenny King (285) each placed fourth in their classes.

    ?We weren?t going to finish fourth (at full strength), but we could have done a little bit better,? Skinner told The Republic.

War on the Wabash

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Senior Zeke Gomez went undefeated for a day, and the Columbus North wrestling team gave a strong performance over the two-day Harrison Invitational.

    Gomez went undefeated in the 132-pound weight class for the opening day on Friday (Nov. 23), then sat out the second day on Saturday (Nov. 24). Senior Jermaine Jones also sat out the second day at 170 pounds.

    At 195, senior Luis Cambron had to forfeit his final match against Prairie Heights after suffering a cut above his eye in the second-to-last match against South Bend Riley.

    Still, the Bull Dogs went 7-3 to finish fourth in the multi-team event that included 10 dual matches over two days. Lake Central won the event, going 10-0. Goshen was second at 9-1 while host Harrison was third at 8-2.

    "This was a vast improvement over last year," CN coach Nick Skinner said. "The Prairie Heights match was a huge win because we started 18 points down (because of three forfeits) against a team that beat us pretty easily last year. I am very excited about the improvement I am seeing so early in the season."

    Columbus North returns to action at 7 p.m. Thursday (Nov. 29) when it hosts Franklin in a dual match. The Bull Dogs follow by competing in the Bloomington North Invitational at 9 a.m. Saturday (Dec. 1).
