3 quads triple the woes for O?s foes

There?s familiarity at the lower weight classes on Columbus East?s wrestling team.

The common bond is the last name Rieker and the common result is a win for the Olympians.

Baron (112), Steven (103) and Zach (119) are brothers who have combined for 63 wins entering Wednesday night?s match against Columbus North.

?Their entire family is very dedicated,? said Columbus East coach Chris Cooper, noting that the fourth of the quadruplets, sister Katarina, is a manger. ?They are at all the things we do and help out all the time.

?That?s one of the reasons they?ve gotten so good. They are around it.?

Baron and Steven agreed that things can get heated for the sophomores, who are often paired against each other in workouts.

?We can get mad in practice, but we have to get over whatever was going on,? Steven said.

Those feisty moments rarely spill over to life at home, but beating one another on the mat is important, according to Baron.

?It can be fun, but sometimes we do fight at practice because none of us wants to lose,? he said. ?It goes both ways.?

Still learning

Cooper said the three brothers are continuing to get better as they grow into their bodies. Two years ago, they were only around 80 pounds.

?They?ve had to almost gain a fourth of their body weight just to compete,? Cooper said. ?I really anticipate over the next couple of years seeing a huge improvement in those guys.

?You?ll start to see all that time they?ve put in show up on the mat.?

And Baron and Zach said that time includes coaching each other.

?If (one) is doing something wrong, I?ll tell him,? Zach said. ?It?s kind of fun.?

And that fun has meant success that carries over to those wrestlers that may not share the last name Rieker, but do share the name Olympians.

?It pumps the whole team up if we can get like three pins in a row,? Zach said. Rieker file
