  1. Good luck to Taylor and the other Hoosiers as they enter the Big Ten Season
  2. Guru, thanks for breakdown. Will you be updating throughout tourney
  3. Bronx thanks where is Clarion. Seeds were released Raley 10, I would expect a better finish Walsh 2, this would be a great boost for him to finish at 2 LeBlanc 11, at top eight would be great Chalfant. 7, a top four would really make statements Other top eights could be Duca at 125, Caton at 133, Luke at 187
  4. #24 Hoosiers Win Big, 52-0, Over Manchester 41 38 3 0 Chris Caton Dec. 14, 2013 BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Hoosier Wrestling made quick work of Manchester University (2-3) Saturday afternoon, dismantling the Spartans 52-0. #24 Indiana (7-1) tallied five pins and three technical falls, allowing just a pair of bouts to go the distance during a 57-minute match. Redshirt junior Joe Duca started the day off by blanking Alan Mock, 16-0, in the 125-pound bout. He wasted little time, taking down Mock in the first five seconds and gathering a 10-0 lead after the opening period. The second stanza began with Duca in the top position and ended after he turned the Spartan twice, completing his third tech fall of the season. True freshman Chris Caton took the mat next for IU, sticking his opponent late in the first period. He led 2-1 before nailing a nasty gator roll to put Kalib Jackson on his back. The smack of the mat came seconds later and the Hoosiers were out to an 11-0 edge on the team scoreboard. An early scramble on the edge of the mat put Ethan Raley in trouble at 141 pounds before the Hoosier ultimately came out on the right end for the takedown. He then sunk in a deep half nelson to bury Josh Juarez with a pin at the 1:33 mark. Joe Randazzo made the most of his last match of the 2013-14 season, posting a 7-3 decision at 149 pounds. The redshirt sophomore is scheduled to spend the spring semester studying abroad in Rome. Randazzo carded a pair of takedowns, a reversal and the riding time bonus point en route to his victory. Taylor Walsh (21-0), ranked fifth nationally at 157 pounds, needed just 29 seconds to flatten his foe for pin number 18 of the season; and 11th consecutive fall. That total leads the country and is already tied for the second most in school history (Kurt Kinser, 2008). The all-time Hoosier record is 19 by Rob Chamberlin in 1981. For his career, Walsh has accumulated 39 falls, good for fifth most in IU history. #22 Ryan LeBlanc kept the bonus points coming in the subsequent bout, majoring Dylan Lauffer 13-4. He racked up five takedowns and a reversal, capturing his team-leading seventh major decision of the season. LeBlanc entered the weekend ranking second in the country with 21 overall wins. He now sits at 22-4 on the year. Leading 12-4, Nate Jackson elected to start the third period in the top position and the aggressive choice paid off. Less than a minute later, Jackson turned Logan Floor and recorded a fall at 5:50. The Hoosier lead inflated to 36-0. #14 Luke Sheridan (20-3) registered Indiana's fifth fall of the match and fourth coming in the first period. He built a 6-2 lead prior to beating the buzzer and getting the pins at 2:49. Garret Goldman completely dominated his bout. The Bloomington native notched a quick takedown and flipped his abused adversary for a total of 12 near-fall points before the opening frame mercifully came to an end. It was a neutral start for the second period, setting up Goldman's takedown for the 16-0 tech fall and his fifth straight triumph overall. It was much the same for Hoosier heavyweight Adam Chalfant, cruising to a 19-3 technical fall of his own. Chalfant (15-1), ranked eighth nationally, picked an ankle and drove Ray Wajda straight to his back to begin the bout with a five-point move and never looked back. 5. Matt Powless Named Assistant Coach 159 153 6 0 Matt Powless Dec. 10, 2013 BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana University head wrestling coach Duane Goldman has hired storied Hoosier Matt Powless as an assistant coach. Powless, a 2011 All-American, joins the coaching staff full-time after serving as the volunteer coach since 2012 while completing his master's degree in Counseling and Counselor Education. "We are excited to keep Matt involved with IU Wrestling," said Goldman. "For several seasons, he was a leader for us on the mat and in the classroom. We look forward to his helping to develop our current athletes in all aspects, on their own roads to success." "I am extremely excited about the opportunity to coach at Indiana University," said Powless. "I competed with immense pride for this university and I bleed Cream and Crimson. I intend to help these wrestlers do the same." Powless racked up 124 wins during his IU career, the fifth-highest total in school history. En route to the All-American stand in 2011, he led all of Division-I wrestling with 13 major decisions and paced the Big Ten with 39 overall wins (seventh-most all-time in a single season at IU). In total, the Newburgh, Ind., native accumulated an overall career record of 124-43 with 35 major decisions, 18 pins and six technical falls. Powless was named Indiana's Most Outstanding Wrestling twice in 2011 and 2012 after earning IU's Most Improved Wrestler laurels as a sophomore in 2010. His resume stretches far beyond the mat, however, leaving an academic legacy as well. Powless is the only four-time Academic All-American in program history and was tabbed as a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar following both his junior and senior campaigns. Most notably though is Powless' selection as a 2012 Spirit of Indiana Directors Award honoree. This accolade is the most prestigious award presented by the IU Athletics Department, rewarded annually by IU Vice President and Director of Athletics Fred Glass; given to just two student-athletes which best represent The Spirit of Indiana: 24 Sports, One Team.
  6. Magazine's early signing period national rankings released this week. Excerpt from W.I.N. In the upper weights, Bryce Martin (174-184) of Bakersfield (Calif.) heads east, with Fletcher Miller (Hwt) of Kokomo the top in-state recruit." The gauntlet of Big Ten Wrestling looks to continue to be an absolute grind in years to come, evidenced by seven of the conference's schools ranked in the top-10 of W.I.N.'s recruiting rankings and nine in the top-12. Maryland and Rutgers, 2014-15 B1G members, are slotted No. 21 and No. 22, respectively; making it 12 of 14 Big Ten programs in the top-25. 7. Dec. 8, 2013 BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Hoosier Wrestling split a pair of duals on Day Two of the Hoosier Duals, coming up a tiebreaker short of a perfect 5-0 weekend. Individually, a quartet of Hoosiers did complete the flawless 5-0 Hoosier Duals mark though. Taylor Walsh, Ryan LeBlanc, Luke Sheridan and Adam Chalfant each arose victorious five times over the weekend, leading #25 Indiana to four team wins. The Hoosiers battled back from a 15-0 deficit to West Virginia (6-2) in Sunday's opener, coming back to even the score at 21-21. The officials had to dig deep into the rule book to determine a dual winner, ultimately decided on the third tiebreaker criteria. West Virginia's 32-29 advantage in non-fall bout points was the difference, giving the Mountaineers a 22-21 (TB) win. Indiana then bounced back against SIUE, topping the Cougars 28-9. Walsh extended his pinning parade, posting two more falls on Sunday. He has now stuck 10 consecutive opponents and owns a 20-0 record with 17 pins. That total is good for third place all-time in IU history and his 38 career falls rank fifth in school history. The school records are 19 (Rod Chamberlin, 1981) and 47 (Viktor Sveda, 1998-2002) for single season and career falls, respectively. Sheridan provided six team points in the Hoosier comeback effort against WVU as well, executing a head lock pin in under a minute. Goldman took the mat next, and kept the Hoosiers alive by grinding out a 6-5 decision over WVU's Mac Mancuso at 197 pounds. Goldman was a riding machine in the Hoosier Duals, racking up riding time and earning the bonus point in each of his four wins. Chalfant then capped off his undefeated weekend, pulling IU even at 21 points apiece on the strength of a 6-3 decision over A.J. Vizcarrondo. Sheridan's season record improves to 19-3, Chalfant's 14-1 and LeBlanc's ledger now sits at 21-4. After dropping his first bout of the Hoosier Duals, Goldman fired back to take the next four and move to 9-8 on the year. Joe Duca and Ethan Raley each contributed a win on Sunday as well, both going 3-2 for the event. 8. Indiana crushes competition on Day 1 of Hoosier Duals 12/7/2013 Indiana University Sports Information BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The #25 Indiana University wrestling team (5-0) shined on Day One of the 2013 Hoosier Duals, going 3-0 and outscoring the competition by a combined scored of 87-18. All 10 Hoosier starters got in on the success, each winning at least two of three bouts and half (5) the lineup going a perfect 3-0. In total, Indiana won 25 of 30 bouts on the day. No opponent reached double-digit point against the Cream and Crimson on Saturday as IU topped Northern Colorado (2-4), Drexel (3-9) and VMI (1-7) by final margins of 32-9, 29-9 and 46-0, respectively. The blanking of VMI marks Indiana's first Division-I shutout since besting Clarion 49-0 on Jan. 18, 2009. Redshirt junior Taylor Walsh continued his 2013-14 pinning clinic, sticking all three foes to improve to 18-0 with 15 falls just over a month into the season. The 6th-ranked 157-pounder in the country now owns a share of fifth place all-time at IU for pins in a season; and his 36 career falls are slotted sixth in school history. The all-time record for season pins is 19 by Rod Chamberlin in 1981 and Viktor Sveda (1998-2002)'s 47 falls are the career high note. *Walsh's 15 pins are tied with Bill Paxton (1986), Rod Chamberlin (1980) and Gene Denisar (1968) Heavyweight Adam Chalfant, ranked eighth nationally, provided the maximum 18 team points as well. He pinned both of his adversaries that took the mat, including #27 Henry Chirino (Northern Colorado) while also accepting a forfeit by Drexel to deliver his 18 points. The redshirt senior improved to 12-1 on the year. Following Walsh's triumphs at 157 pounds, Indiana did not suffer a defeat in the next three weight classes for the entirety of Day One. Ryan LeBlanc (165 lbs), Nate Jackson (174 lbs) and Luke Sheridan (184 lbs) matched Walsh by also going 3-0. The trio contributed bonus points to the Hoosier effort as well. LeBlanc and Sheridan notched tech falls while Jackson carded a pin and major decision. Sheridan's action was full of suspense, twice seizing victory in extra time. His first win came in sudden victory, followed by a tiebreaker win in bout number two. A quintet of Hoosiers took two out of three, a group including: Joe Duca (125 lbs), Chris Caton (133 lbs), Ethan Raley (141 lbs), Alex Gregory (149 lbs) and Garret Goldman (197 lbs). Bonus points came from Duca (tech fall), Caton (two major decisions) and Raley (tech fall). West Virginia (6-2) was victorious in each of its three duals Saturday as well, setting up a likely Hoosier Duals title match against the Hoosiers on Sunday at 11 a.m. Indiana will also face SIUE at approximately 1 p.m. to wrap up the round-robin affair.
