  1. If anyone would be kind enough to at least run through the final individual placements when its over I'd appreciate it.

I will be attempting to post results as they come in.  I'll be on my phone so I may not have each wrestlers name but expect at least a format similar to 103 PM over BN, and etc.  I'll only be able to keep up until about 2:30 since Notre Dame plays at 3:00.

  2. I wasn't going to respond but I almost feel obligated to educate those who have never heard about ISI because it is truly such a unique school and amazing opportunity for those fortunate to be accepted. Since it is hard for some to comprehend how a straight A 8th grade student coming from a public school could be placed into 8th grade at ISI I will try to explain the uniqueness of the school. Unlike public schools their classes are taught in languages other than English(total immersion). When u set up your schedule you choose a language track, for example Ben chose Spanish as his primary language, French as his secondary and then English as his third. This means Ben's language & humanities classes are taught in Spanish(that is the language the teacher uses to teach the class, she/he will speak NO English or any other language during class. It's not that Ben could not have comprehended the material taught at grade level 9, it's the fact he has to comprehend it in a foreign language! He has chose to predominately focus this school year on becoming multilingual. But in addition to all the language courses he takes there he is studying physics, chemistry, microbiology, geometry, trigonometry, drama, religion, & world history(none of which he had previously taken). The classes consist on average of  6 to 10 students depending on the subject and within each class the students work at their own pace. There is not a "honors" program there because all students are gifted however the students still work to their potential which means they do not always work on the same thing. A state regimented curriculum is not in place as I stated before they follow the IB. 8th-12th graders are all together in the upper school. 8th-10th graders work within the MYP or middle years program while 11th and 12th graders work on IB. The school functions like a college with complete freedom given to the students. For example if I need to take Ben to the doctor I text him and tell him what time ill be there. I do not have to call the school and sign him out. Trust is given to the students.  He is expected to make all arrangements with his teachers if he misses something just like in college. It is a " paperless" school all grades are required to have a Mac and all homework and teacher correspondence is done through their Mac's. During their lunch time they are free to leave or go outside on the campus and play football etc. rules are not strictly placed upon them as they are in public schools. At ISI there are no "bad apples" to spoil the bunch. Everyone is there with the same goals, they all seem to share the same core values and morals. They are all there for a better education. the school focuses on critical thinking and application of knowledge, unlike regular schools that just teach based on memorization. It's really quite an unreal atmosphere that no matter how much I try and explain it most will not understand without actually seeing it first hand. Please if you have time just go to their website and take a look yourself...ISIND.ORG

And to Indy Star who has lived here 52 years ISI was founded in 1994...:)

Athletics aside this sounds like a fantastic opportunity.  Public school education needs reform and for that very reason if/when I have children I will send them to an international/private/college prep school before I would a public school.  I have many friends from college who attend schools such as ISI and were well ahead of most students intellectually and athletically due to similar opportunities.

In my opinion I do fully believe that many high schools (some private schools included) fail to prepare students for college.  Especially considering the fact that in 2011 we graduated 87.5% of eligible high school seniors and only 30% of the U.S. population over the age of 25 have a college degree.  I do realize that some students choose not to pursue an associates or bachelors following high school (and that is their decision) but truly we are lagging in our education system.

Also, I just would like to point out I love the discussion we are having under the subject of "2012 IndianaMat Preview Magazine is HERE!" By the way it is a fantastic magazine.  If you don't have one buy it!

  3.

If this is the argument you are using to prove your point then it would greatly help those who argue Indiana should go to a multiple class wrestling state. From what I have seen it seems a lot of people are against going toward multiple classes but the argument could be used for it's proponents except on a in state high school level.

I'm not necessarily saying I think Indiana should jump at the idea of going to a classed system but that this argument can't be used as a valid explanation of Indiana not being at the same wrestling level and depth of other states if you aren't willing to accept that the same would qualify as a great reason for Indiana to become a classed wrestling state.

I am not too sure how the wildcatcountry97's statement helps to strengthen the argument for a classed wrestling tournament.  However, if you are barking up that tree it is an privilege for the 14 young men from Indiana to be crowned state champions- that is one beautiful thing about a single class wrestling state.  But... I do believe Indiana should give some serious consideration to classing the state tournament.

I hate to bring politics into this but our current system does help big schools (big business), the small schools even when they have a great amount of talent are overlooked, and the "middle class" seems to get hit hard.  Classing a state tournament would provide more wrestlers from Indiana the opportunity to wrestle in college then hopefully come back to Indiana coach in the state, or even at their high school. With the knowledge gained from more of our high school athletes getting to wrestle in college it would really deepen the roots of tradition and talent throughout the entire state of Indiana in turn growing Indiana into a stronger wrestling state.

I know the above ^ statement could have been fleshed out more but I do stand by it.  Pennsylvania, Illinois, Ohio, Michigan, Minnesota, Iowa, and so on are all classed states and darn good states.  Indiana as I have stated before is without question getting better but ultimately classed wrestling would only help our state become one of the "best wrestling states."

  4. Texas population: 25,674,681 based on 2011 census.

Texas is a "third tier" high school wrestling state yet has a great population than Ohio, Pennsylvania, Illinois, and New Jersey.  Numbers can be deceiving.  Indiana is a basketball state.  Bottom line.  Indiana is clearly not the most populated state in America and no one in their right mind who is educated on the sport of high school basketball would honestly believe that we are not the best state for basketball.  Last year we had 12 or 13 of the ESPN's top 100 high school basketball players.

Indianamat has done an amazing job in advertising and promoting the sport of wrestling.  When the state removed the team tournament coaches by communicating through Indianamat (and other means) established a solution with the dual tournament to be held at Westfield High School.  Also, they have started the Indianamat preseason open- among other things.

Indiana athletes do not have to look very far to find a basketball camps filled with former Indiana High School athletes.  Also, youth are constantly reminded of the consistent great players that come from the state of Indiana that have compete at a high level at any stage in their careers.  This was established through years and years of tradition.

Indiana wrestling is catching up.  We are definitely getting better.  Tradition in this state is becoming deeper and deeper among teams.  Individuals like Andrew Howe, Angel Escabedo, Reece Humphrey, and so on are deepening our Indiana wrestling roots and tradition as well as pride.  We may never be better than Ohio, Pennsylvania, or Illinois but we are getting better.  Our coaches are getting better and part of that has to do with tradition and pride in programs developing, promotion of our sport, the increase in popularity of UFC, increased understanding of weight training techniques, and so on.

I am excited for the future of Indiana wrestling.

  5. I agree that Howe was probably better than Jason as a freshman, although I'm not sure Andrew had a better win as a freshman than Jason did over Cashe.

As a senior, I think Jason is the best ever from Indiana.

I think this is a "what have you done for me lately" debate.  Jason is fresh in everyone's minds.  It is extremely tough to compare.  Just like in football could Jim Brown still play today and be just as dominant?  I think the best way to look is their entire body of work in high school.  And in the very near future for Jason college.  In my opinion Howe is better-the best ever in Indiana.  Jason is stellar.  But both of them are fantastic wrestlers and great ambassadors for Indiana.

I think the best thing about this debate is how much better Indiana wrestling is getting.  Individual's like Howe, Tsirtsis, Humphrey, Angel, Quiroga, and Walpole making noise and competing at a very high level. (Sorry if I forgot any others that should be mentioned).

  6. That much is clear, for sure.  The question was posed as this: if they were both seniors in high school at the same weight, who wins?

My answer still remains Howe.  They both started High School at 125, correct?  Jason had two losses one of them being to Quiroga who was a monster beating everyone in his way until losing to Jason at state.  Despite how dominate and amazing Quiroga was he was not better than Humphrey one of Indiana's historical best.  Howe's only loss was to Humphrey.

Howe was a machine.  Jason is an awesome wrestler and is going to have a great career and both him and Howe while in high school were clearly the best wrestlers in Indiana.  But Howe gets the nod if they go head to head.  I agree with the Region Rat... Howe is the best grappler from Indiana ever.

  7. Howe.  Only loss in High School was to Humphrey otherwise he is a 4x State Champ.  Now one of the best wrestlers in the United States of America not just Div-1.  And only wrestler to Tech is way through state almost did it 2x in a row.  Jason and Alex both amazing, no one is doubting that, but Howe is probably the best Indiana wrestler ever.

  8. I know he used to be part of the Beech Grove wrestling family when his father coached the Middle School.  Great family and a great kid.  Is he "the incoming freshmen" if he decides to come to Indiana?  Just curious.  I have heard the Red kid is outstanding.

  9. no mostly nails and glass...   SA...   WHY CANT INDIANA MAT POST THEM?   ITS LAZY NOT TO UPDATE the rankings   much less not to update wins and losses during the season. Wins and losses werent  updated after 1/2 the season, which is when wins and losses are more critical.  Do it right or just dont do it...    or should I expect a half A'd website?

The website is free and in my opinion has been fantastic.  If it is not up to your standard then develop another website that suites your needs.  If you don't think the website is done "right" then why make a screen name just to complain it comes across ironic and uneducated.

And since I know you will more than likely make the statement I am forgetting about the wrestlers accomplishments.  I would like to congratulate everyone who participated in the state tournament and placed beyond their rankings.  Also, applause for everyone who wrestled this year it is a tough sport and extremely rewarding.

  10. Not to rip him, but you'll do it anyway. Amazing how people get on here and use someones pain for their pleasure!. Myself on the other hand was impressed with all 16 kids from each weight class, as these young men and lady worked very hard to get to State, no matter where they placed or qualified. Regardless if a wrestler was "on their game" or not, each match at the state level is a dog fight with each wrestler wanting to continue and giving it their all. The fact is they are still young adults with a lot of emotions. Several great wrestlers were defeated prior to the finals, doesn't make them any less an athlete or competitor. My hats off to all of them and I wish them the best in their endeavors. As far as some of you simpletons posting these comments that might be hurtful to these kids, put your big boy pants on and hit the mat, until then, I'm not impressed!

It's a message board.  People are entitled to their opinions.  Also, the title of the thread "Most Impressed/Least Impressed Friday Night" renders comments as previously posted.  I wouldn't make those comments but it is not too outlandish to see how individuals may come to their on conclusions and do so.  Suter is a good wrestler and placed at state- enough said.  No need to get so defensive.  People are just having a conversation.  Your comments are no different than any other persons when you make rash remarks about individuals posting, "He is probably one of those guys who never made varsity."  Sources?  Obviously you are a Suter fan... But people are just trying to have a conversation.

Also, the Falcons did work!  I am extremely impressed with Maurer (EMD) sit out 3 years and come back and place 3rd.  If he never would have taken a sabbatical we probably would be talking about a 4x place winner and 2 or 3x state champion.  Also, congrats to Sliga finally taking home the gold.  He is an absolute beast.

  11. I think Tsirtsis will Tech or Pin all of the opponents at 145 this year if fully healthy and injury free.  I don't think Howe did it his senior year he beat Duckworth 22-9 in the championship match, but he was pretty close  :)

Tsirtsis will see Mavros 2 or 3 more times and it will get harder each time IMO, but I think he does it.

Howe Tech'd his way through his Junior year but not his Senior year.  Most dominating Indiana high school wrestler I have ever seen.  Had it not been for Reece Humphrey his Freshmen year we would have another 4x.  Oh well either way he is still the best wrestler from Indiana.

  12. I wouldnt be surprised seeing Phillips take fourth behind Crume, Lecount, and Ayersman.  I also dont see Brandenstein winning it after not ever qualifying beofre.. But only time will tell

His name slips my mind, the state champ at 189 last year from Bloomington North had never qualified for state and beat Stevenson to win the State title.  Also, the Heavy Weight I believe was a first time qualifier (don't quote me on that one).  So Brandenstein could shock some people, not saying he will, but he could.  EMD wrestlers are always well prepared, coached, and conditioned so wouldn't be a total surprise.

  13. 106- Boston

113- Brooks (although wouldn't be shocked if James pulled an upset)

    120- Todd

    126- Philips

    132- Molloy

    138- Jackson

    145- Tsirtsis

    152- Mullins

    160- Harvey

    170- Willis

    182- Brandenstein

    195- Maurer

    220- Knura

    285- Bernard

I know I have some unorthodox picks but just wanted to make this fun.  Maurer over Sliga would be a huge upset but Maurer has been wrestling great and it would be an awesome story.

  14. Talent is talent regardless.  I don't think it is fair to compare teams.  The 2003 EMD team is in the record books.  The 2012 Perry Meridian Falcons are AMAZING but there is still a season of wrestling to be completed.  I do think they will probably repeat as Team State Champs but I think Crown Point and EMD would politely disagree with me.  Athletes are better in every state not just Indiana.  Everyone is getting bigger, faster, and stronger.

But if push come to shove and I had to pick EMD 2003 or Perry Meridian 2012 (both awesome teams) I am taking EMD.  Four state champs and very high state placers.  They had a murderers row.

  15. Not so sure that's correct I was in that county and I would've remembered that I think

I admit I could be wrong.  But I do think that was BG's best performance at County.  I was just trying to provide some insight.

  16. Concerning Beech Grove historically, as far as most champions in the county tournament, I believe it was 2001 that Beech Grove had 11 in the finals and 8 champions.  Please don't quote me on it.  But if I remember right it was the team with Hobbs, Gibson, Price, and Baker.

Its the history major in me- pursuing primary sources.  Small fee too look at the article.  But Beech Grove probably had their best County performance during the 2001 season.
