  1. But we do have weight classes. That is the leveler the great equalizer. No 300lb vs 200lb football of-set. The weight classes are the biggest argument for no Class for Wrestling. I do bend and see your points for team sports, you have truly made an impression........but not for wrestling.
  2. Where did the "don't work hard enough" come from? Missed that!
  3. So I guess we could just give everyone that works hard a trophy or a championship! Heck why even compete? Lets just hand out awards!
  4. Hard to argue those numbers!!! Would like to hear more small school numbers.
  5. I can only talk Bloomington South cuz that is where my son goes. Wrestling has a bad reputation as far as work goes ( as I am sure most programs have) We have an enrollment of 1736 so we are a large school. So we start the year with 65-70 Wrestlers right....Wrong! Averages over the last 4 years (thats all I have) Start of Season Day one we average 34 wrestlers. That is returning wrestlers 2-3 new non Freshmen and the Freshmen from the middle schools. Start of wrestling (1st dual) actual roster average 26. ( the rest have quit) Start of Sectionals / post season actual roster average of 22 (injury or quit) 22 wrestlers and we continuously compete ( we have one the sectional 21 of the past 22 years) I am guessing even the smallest schools can produce those numbers. The difference is the 22 that remain have been in the feeder system for an average of 9 years! It is hard for a small school to develop a feeder system, but it can be done. I challenge you to show me a school that has support for wrestling that cannot produce those numbers. You may need 75 boys to make a football team, but 25 wrestlers with the right mind-set can be enough to win!
  6. You lump the Classing of Sports as a one. Do you believe that Wrestling is the same as football as far as classing goes. This discussion is a Class Wrestling discussion. I am not a fan of Class Sports, but no way would I ever support Class Wrestling. Reasoning- Weight classes equal out (not like a football team with a 300lb average on the offensive line and a small school with 200lb defense linemen) Though they win/lose as a team it is an individual competition Wrestling is a much smaller sport (by the numbers ,$, spectators, participants etc) going to class system would make it too easy to win at all levels, which would make winning less important. You argue that is would encourage more athlete to participate. Formula Success = more support= more athletes in the room. Good argument! But I want the athletes that want to be there. If my program has to be a winner for you to play....I don't want you! Go try out for basketball!
  7. Obliviously I do not. That is what makes us different.
  8. Well during my time we really did not win any....even in the class. But those that were won were revered and placed in honor. I am sure that a Class title would be revered. But answer me this, does making it easier for a team to win, do anything but fill the trophy case? For our football team we took pride in ourselves in our accomplishments not in the trophy case. I feel we were better prepared because of it.
  9. Again missing my point! I have never been good at explaining thru writing. But for me I would rather finish 34th out of 100, than 1st out of 10. It is just an opinion. And for the record I do believe we should be honest with the kids. Life is not fair. Teaching them that it is, will set them up for failure. It should not be our number 1 teaching point, but yes kids should be prepared.
  10. You are taking my quote as a partial. I would hate to win and have to wonder for the rest of my life if I was really the best.
  11. Totally disagree!.........by lowering the standards and making it easier for a program to achieve success what are we teaching the kids. I try to buy from local merchants but at times I go to Walmart because it makes financial sence. The local merchants (small schools) can't compete when Walmart (large school) comes to town and often go belly-up. It is not fair....Well guess what life is not fair. I know from the experience of going to a smaller county school that it was hard to compete. My senior year every away game we played (football) was the other teams homecoming, cuz we sucked. But the few wins we had that year against big schools were our measurement of success. I believe that High School sports do a great job of preparing our youth for life. If we just give them success I believe we are sending them the wrong message. Side note: Do away with the cool points, this board is about discussion and opinions. People take points away from poster for having a differing opinion. Does not make sence. I agree with taking points away for calling out a wrestler by name or getting obscene. But not for speaking your mind!
  12. Many many people work hard, very hard and still loose, that is life. I just don't believe that everyone that works hard can finish number one. Everyone that works hard should have the opportunity to succeed, but everyone can't win. At the individual state final.........does a wrestler that finishes 2nd or 5th or 8th not enjoy success? I believe they do. I believe that they are proud, or they should be. I guess I am just a strong believer that there is only one winner. I would hate to win in class 2A, and go thru life wondering if I was really better than the 4A guy or not.
  13. How did Knight (215 Terrehaute North), stay off the radar all year? He is 36-1 and truly a beast of a young man! I am guessing it was a competition issue.
  14. How does the institution of Class Sports mean that more kids get to EXPERIENCE athletics? Maybe I am missing something here. To me Class Sports is an entitlement! I work hard so I am entitled to success. That is not teaching our youth the real world. I would rather win a section as a small school in a single class than win state in a class system.
  15. I have Kinser at 149- Nick is a beast but who wins....Kinser vs Walpole? .......My vote Kinser!
  16. I am against Class High School Sports.......not just wrestling for a simple reason. Without it, a team that wins State is the best team in the state...period. With it a team that wins state is not necessarily the best in the state. I would propose a system by which schools are regionalized based on location and school size, then at some point (probably team state) they come together to compete for the title. Eight teams at state, broken down by percentage of school size, maybe 1 team from population under 500, 2 teams from population under 1000 and 5 teams from large schools. This way a smaller school can compete against other smaller schools, but in the end there is one winner. I am sure cost (travel) would keep this from happening. Just asking the question, is there a middle ground? With class Basketball there will never be another Miland (Hoosiers)! That single win is the strongest argument against class sports. Maybe the small schools do it once a generation, but when they do they will never be forgotten.
  17. Indiana does not rank as one of the top 5 states for High School Wrestling. However, I would think that if you took Indiana wrestlers that are wrestling in college today they would make an All-Star team that is hard to beat. Help me out. Who would be the College All-Star team made up of Indiana High School Wrestlers. Must currently be in College. Sorry in Advance for the spelling! 125- Angel Escebedo (IU) 133- Josh Harper 141- Reese Humprey (OU) 149- 157- Kirk Kinser 165- Andrew Howe 174- 184- 197- 285- Help me fill in the blanks!
  18. He must of had a time with the weight rules.! 200 lbs in Mid November, now mid/late January (9 ish weeks). with the 1.5% rule he could lose 3 pounds per week. So he could legally make the weight. However it had to be a chess match making sure he lost at a pace that kept him qualified and got down in time to get the qualifying weigh-ins! Kudos on a well managed season!
  19. Just because I ask a question does not mean I am for the death of wrestlers with asthma! I am just looking for "THE RULE". I would like to know what the book says as far as taking ANY medication during a match. And is an inhaler a SPECIAL circumstance. I don't even have a problem with it. I just want to know what the rules say!
  20. Been many times I believe it is $5 for students and $8 for adults. Pretty close to that anyway.
  21. As I said in my post I do not favor a rule change! No way an official should have to determine the status on an injury. That said, I have seen (and would never call out a team or individual) wrestlers call injury time and drink water, get coached and no one in the wrestlers area is even looking like they are treating an injury. I all so do not intend to say this happens a lot. But it does happen on a regular basis. As for the medicine question I was looking for a "Rule". I really don't have an opinion, just wanted to know if a wrestler is allowed by rule to take medication during a match. As too your comment, you claim this happens occasionally so are you a Doctor or just have a better view?. It does not take a doctor or a great view. Some of this is done with no attempt to fake an injury ....they just use the rules to their advantage. The reason I brought this up is some teams seem more likely to use this tactic year after year. As I said I would never name, names because I cannot be sure. But when it becomes a pattern it truly pisses me off! For what it is worth "I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night!"
  22. JMO but when a wrestler or team goes the extra mile to really be conditioned......it is cheating to use tactics considered unethical to get an advantage. Every elite wrestler in the state is conditioned. If not they would not be elite!
  23. The above quote is not a reflection of any attempt to bribe or favor the officiating crew at Regionals. Comments are solely that of an individual. : :
