  1. There should clearly be a regional/semistate competition for national anthem singers, with the winner advancing to Conseco.  I'm sure Rankings Guy could incorporate that into his rankings.

I thought the young lady did as good a job as possible.  She sounded a bit nervous, but I think her voice or vocal chords or whatever just sort of started giving out on her on the really high notes.  I bet on another night she would hit those notes perfectly.

  2. Another:

    Contest

    Stillness,

    Before beginning,

    Focus narrows,

    To target,

    Sounds diminish,

    Without silence.

    The movie runs,

    In your head,

    Which moves,

    Counter moves,

    How victory,

    Will come.

    Move,

    No thought,

    No mind,

    Breathe,

    The referee?s signal,

    It begins.

  3. Quiet on here as everyone slowly makes their way to Conseco for Indiana's greatest amateur sports contest.

Found this poem on the net, thought it was good:

    Source:  http://www.thewrestlingtalk.com/miscellaneous-wrestling/366-wrestling-poem.html#axzz0g0ixzhQP

this poem is written by former Hawkeye Trent Goodale's younger brother, Theran Goodale. He wrestles at Osage and was a third place finisher this past year as a Junior.

    "Blood, Sweat, and Tears"

Each drop of blood that hits the ground,

    strengthens his reserve.

    Every time a drop falls,

    he pushes harder.

No time or point in stopping.

    His partner won't stop,

    so neither will he.

His blood goes into this sport he loves,

    his pain along with it.

    The sweat is enveloping him.

All of his clothes stained and weighed down with it.

His whole body's wet, and warm,

his breaths are shallow and rushed.

Each new drip that goes down his face,

brings him closer to his goal.

Each drip is added together to make his weight.

No time or point in stopping.

    His partner won't stop,

    so neither will he.

Sweat is a part of this sport,

    and a part of him.

    His tears slowly roll,

down his face onto the mat.

As he looks his opponent in the face,

both bleeding, sweating, and ready to drop.

    Neither had given up,

it was a fight until the end.

He looks up to his parents in the crowd,

sitting where he knew they would be.

    He looks to the fans,

    the coaches,

    and his team mates.

A tear falls for each of them.

He thinks of all the countless hours he has put in,

    all the missed parties,

    all the uneaten food,

    all the time he has lost;

all the blood he has shed,

all the sweat he has given,

and all the tears he has cried.

A tear falls for each of these.

He thinks of all the blood, sweat, and tears he has dripped.

The crimson rivers he could have made with that blood.

The pounds he lost with all that sweat.

The showers he could have taken under all those tears.

Was all of that time wasted?

    All of that passion misplaced?

    Was it all worth it?

The referee shakes both their hands.

He wipes a little blood from his mouth,

shakes the sweat from his eyes,

and lets his last tear fall.

    His fans shout,

    his team jumps and hollers,

    his parents cry,

    as his hand slowly ascends,

    to the level of champions..

    Worth it?

    Every Second.

    Just for fun here --

Let's say all the head wrestling coaches in Indiana get to Conseco a day early.  There is a single mat under the scoreboard, the lights in the arena are dimmed, with only the single light illuminating the wrestling surface.  This brings a tear to many of their old eyes, longing for the glory days.  Finally, someone decides that it would be a GREAT idea for them all to strap on the old Asics, SQUEEEEEZE into an old moth-eaten singlet, and have a tournament amongst themselves before all the fans show up.

They divide themselves up into these 6 divisions:

    • Young PEEWEE

    • Young MIDWEIGHT

    • Young BUBBA (X-LARGE)

    • Old-Timer PEEWEE

    • Old-Timer MIDWEIGHT

    • Old-Timer BUBBA

OLD-TIMER = 25+ years out of high school (1985 graduation)

Who comes out victorious?  Who runs out of gas after about 28 seconds of "go-time"?  Who runs out of gas while trying to tie their shoes?  Is there a supply of IcyHot and Advil large enough to possibly meet the demand??

Sidenote:  although Y2 lobbies for a small school division, he is thrown into the scrum with the rest of the coaches -- sorry Y2!!  ;D

  6. What a great accomplishment!!  We all know how much dedication, sacrifice, and hard work wrestling takes -- to maintain such a high level of academic excellence while pursuing their wrestling career is incredible.

I would vote (can anyone at IHSAA make this happen) that all of these young men be allowed to have their own "March of Champions" at Conseco during the state finals.  These are TRUE student-athletes, the epitome of what any parent would like their young wrestler to be.

  7. Think about who is running the clock at most high school meets.  They are not professionals, they are mat maids and other assorted volunteer help.  We already see controversy about a clock starting late or left running for a few seconds when they go out of bounds.

Now, if you are going to start awarding points based on this clock management, I think it would be an absolute disaster.

One thing I would like to see is more like freestyle -- you go out of bounds one time, you get a warning. You go out again, it's a point for the other man.  Let's stop this fleeing/using the circle to avoid any risk.  Instead, let's keep the athletes in the circle and let them do what they are there for -- wrestle.

  8. Ok, now what you will want to do is report immediately to the satellite office where they do the pairing and check in.

This satellite office is referred to as the Red Gar-ter.  It's on Meridian.  Stop in, tell them caliboy sent you, and mention that you are hoping that you got a good pair.  They will be able to take a look at the "brackets" and tell you if the pair you got is good or not so good.  If it is not so good, do not be discouraged, this is refrerred to as the "luck of the draw".

    ;D

I'm just kidding MatMom...did not mean to offend in any way.

Truly, if you will be videotaping I will say that there is a platform at about mid-court (if the Pacers were playing) and just below the balcony level.  Fans/family often setup tripods there with video cameras, and there are some folding chairs there too.  Best of luck to your son, hope he has the wrestling day of his life!!

  9. How were the brackets previously setup when there were 3 qualifiers from each regional?

    16 participants coming in makes a perfect bracket -- #1's face #4's    and #2's face #3's.

With only 12 participants, how did they do the bracketing before they began taking 4 to semistate?

  10. i actually thought the same thing yesterday when i was looking through the crowd. It looked packed last year at the finals and this year you could see green seats everywhere. it didnt cost me anything to get in, i filled up the water bottles from the hospitality room and snuck in a 5... 5.... 5 dollar foot long. but i agree with duck... if you were to take a family of four it would be quite pricey. 8)

I shudder to think of where you had the foot-long secreted away!  :-X ;D

  11. Where was Archuleta for Purdue @ 141?  I watched him wrestler Humphrey @ Ohio State and only lost 3-1.  Then he defeated a highly ranked guy from Minnesota, so seemed on a big roll.

I assume Archuleta beats Monaco @ 141, and that would have given Purdue the victory.

Couldn't make it yesterday, but sounds like it was an exciting match, hope they do it again next year!

  12. I'm glad you brought this up.  This certainly hasn't been discussed on here before, and I'm certain that you're eloquently phrased and constructed argument has persuaded all to your side.

    ;D ;D ;D
  13. If they said they have 100 scholarships to give out to anyone in the state and they said they have 500 candidates for them, 250 from small schools and 250 from big schools. They were going to draw all 100 scholarships out of hat since everyone was evenly matched and 75% of the scholarships went to big school kids.... is that fair?

Due to your statement that everyone was evenly matched, this example fails.

Academic scholarships would go to the students who score the highest on the test scores.  Some students from bigger schools may have better teachers or better equipment in science, and therefore PERFORM BETTER than their small school counterparts.  Scholarships would be performance based and so 75% may go to the big school students.
