  1. Quiroz made a huge impression on me last year in the semi state and state grinding out match after match against some very tough opponents but I do not see him beating McMurry either.  Hopefully they will get a chance to match up again under the lights and he can prove a lot of people wrong much like he did last year.  Good luck!

  2. Wow! What a great list.  Seeing some of those names does bring back memories.  I think the 90s wins this dual because of depth.  00s is and has been top heavy.  Some great wrestlers but overall not as deep as the 90s.  Hard to compare Hummell to todays 215s because he used his quickness, length and tech against bigger slower wrestlers and got beat by your pick at HWT Schneirder who IMO is the quickest 270 lber Ive ever seen who flat out dominated the HWT class his senior and junior year.  Cassidy should def be getting more votes.  Cashe is good but Cassidy was a 3x state champ. And Case Hooper dominated both his junior and senior year.  A guy that was strong, well coached and had great tech.

It would be a great dual to watch!!!

  3. D2d,

you described to very different situations when calling stalemate so to say it was inconsistent isn't fair to the ref. If the ref would continuely call stalemate on one wrestler in the top position and not the other than you have an arguement but not in two different situations.

    Awood,

I think it is funny when coaches or fans  say " there is a picture in the book". Those are still photos with captions that describe the situation. For example some of takedown photos say "when the croth lift no longer prevents the takedown this is control". Control is always felt and getting these calls right takes experience.

And learning the intricacies of the rules can definately help understand calls and consistency.

  4. Pin2win,in ur two examples ur saying that a 21 year old couldn't have those same situations like hurting a wrestlers or dating a student.  Liability for the school is the same for a 20 year old or a 21 year old. If the administration does a good screening processes then they reduce their liability.

  5. I'm kinda curious as how many people really don't like the current system. I can see an arguement for wrestlebacks at semi state to see who goes to state or even wreslte backs for kids who lose Friday night but who really cares about true 2nd or true 3rd. If some one told me they got 3rd in state vs 5th in state I think they are a dang good wrestler not "i wonder if he was really the 3rd best kid that year or if the 5th place kid coulda beat the 3rd place kid".

Rather than full wrestle backs how about seeding the tournament. I was just talking to a friend who got 4th in his semi state that had the eventual 2nd, 3rd and 4th place finishers in state come out of his semi state and of course he drew the eventual champ Friday night. Had that tourney been seeded maybe he places.

  6. You cant please 100% of the people 100% of the time.  Any decision that IHSAA or this new board makes will upset someone.  And as far as the video tape... dont  you think that the IHSAA did its own investigation and maybe hired someone to record those video tapes.  Of course the IHSAA couldnt accept video tapes from just anyone.... they would recieve 100 tapes a day on everything from ineligble players to bad calls on the court.

  7.

"Something should be done about that rule. Not say the potentially dangerous is wrong, but every kid in the state knows if a leg rider is working their offense and they stand up then it stops. Not really fair to the top wrestler.  I didn't like that Eppert gets called for stalling because Wright stands up.  If the top wrestler jumps on top of a guy it understandable but if the top man has his legs in before the other guy stands up, it shouldn't be stalling on the top man."

    Just my thought

You said it right there... leg rider.  If he is riding he is stalling.  Why penalize the bottom guy for trying to get away.  What attempt at scoring did the "leg rider" do?

  8. I think it's like calling the intentional foul in Basketball........everybody knows you're going to foul at the end of the game if you're behind and wanting to put the other team on the line............just like everybody knows if you have a lead at the end of the match you're likely going to  become conservative and protect the lead.  I don't like seeing the guy who has been the agressor the entire match (and earned the lead) get penalized for trying to protect his lead in the last few seconds.

Very true but atleast make it look good when you are "trying to protect your lead".  A half a shot, any motion forward, some attempt at staying in bounds all goes a long way towards "protecting that lead"

  9. In just looking at Duos, I think Will Hill and Vernon Cannon stand out to me.  Both graduated the same year and finished 1st and 2nd respectively at state their senior years.  But what I think makes them a great Duo for this discussion is that their team wasnt that strong.  It was basically a 1-2 punch of Hill and Cannon.

Dont get me wrong all the above mentioned "duos", "trios", or teams are all deserving.

Will Hill had a huge fan base from EMD especially after beating James Brimm of Evansville Central in (I believe) 95 state championship semifinals. I ended up meeting his cousin who went to USI a year later pretty cool dude.

Both Will and Vernon were both class acts.  I happen to be sitting near the EMD section of Market Square Arena that year and just about needed ear plugs when they went nuts over Will beating Brimm.
