  1. I see no reason for this if you call it the "Coaches Trophy" and do not recognize it as being awarded by the ISHAA as a state championship or being connected with an IHSAA state championship.  It's not taking away from their award and they have several other things announced during the day the IHSAA doesn't keep official stats or records of so whats the difference.  Can someone just run around with a big whiteboard and show the number to the crowd then.  :)

  2. I remember getting our wrestler seeded at Capital City Classic and having a first year MJJ drawn as our first round opponent.  We figured we would be able to advance since he was still young and inexperianced but boy were we wrong.  He went on to have a very impressive CCC.  I could tell then he was going to make noise and he did indeed.

  3. Sure would be nice if they could do a coaches trophey Top 10 score update after every round.  Couldn't help to get some of the crowd into a few matches because their small school or lesser known school is hanging with the big names in the top 10.  Just seems like the crowd was not as lively as in past years and it would be nice to keep the energy going more than it was most of this weekend.

  4. Didn't do the Mat Burns contest but from last weeks picks I ended up with 10 champions.  I must be slacking that may one of my lower scores in recent years.  My consolation was I did manage to guess almost all the finalists.  I'm sure a few people picked got around 13 with their none favorite that ended up not being such a long shot.

  5. I was not witness to the match so can not commment on what happened.  However, I didn see Vlahos go ahead and wrestle for 3rd/4th.  I know I saw him on the awards stand later.  Was it an injury timeout that went over and he was DQed for the illegal move but it was not a flagrant DQ that eliminated him from the event?  I didn't get to hear much info on it so I'm just trying to distinguish that DQ from the South Adams flagrant DQ (refs call at least) which pulled that kid from the medal stand.

  6. I will give Charlestowns wrestler's some major credit for acting very mature and not wanting to have the match go out like that.  He was trying to make an appeal to the ref to understand what was happening with the call and then went on to appologize to the wrestler and the South Adams coaches for having the mach end like that.  At least he wanted to see the outcome decided on the mat and didn't like the fact he had to accept the win in that way.    What really sucks the most out of it is losing the actual medal spot that the South Adams kids worked for even if the match did get awarded to the Charlestown kids.  Just another unfortunate siutation that has happen this year that seemed very unclear.

  7. Actually wish they would have spent a little more time explaining that one at some point between the finals introduction, Bennetts win or his awards presentation.  Would have been a better send off if more people in the crowd really understood what it ment by a good "send off" for Anderson Highlands.

  8. I think I missed around 20 for round 1.  Had a few weights without a miss but had a few wieghts with 3 and I think one with 4 misses.  Whoever said to always go with the MV-SS may owe me a few picks.  Just kidding ;D.  No wonder I never take the time to do this contest it a lot of effort and you still guess wrong.  At least most of the misses were for lower placeing kids so maybe that will help in the long run.

  9. I don't think you can bring a laptop. Unless you are with the media. Call them to make sure. Last year they told me no.

I've brought one in several years in a row in my backpack.  They have seen it as they go through my bag but never have said anything.  However, I've been in the suite and they may just let people their bring a little more in since that area has more rooms than general seating does.  We will be right underneath the new super suite area they have so if they have wi-fi in just that area the other coach I am with will be able to pick it up tonight (I'm not hauling my computer in for once).

  10. If I recall correctly they do.  However, most of it was password protected for Conseco use or for media use I'm guessing.  I think they may have one open wi-fi spot in the dinning area or the new mega luxury box but it a weak signal from about anyplace but that location.  Who knows things may have changed though.

Riding time should def be added in high school. If for no other reason to prepare these kids for college. We as a state are very weak in the down position and we have these studs on their feet but they get beat 1 to 0 in college by some kid that is decent on their feet but a beast on the mat. We need to make mat wrestling more important at the high school level because it is the biggest change when you jump to college I remember I came out of high school with both the season and career takedown records at my high school and all of the sudden I cant get a takedown and I am terrible on the mat and I was getting beat by a point because I was so use to takedown then cut takedown then cut. This is a problem that I see here in Indiana and we need to fix it and I think this would help.

I totally agree our wrestlers should be more prepared for mat wrestling at the college level.  However, this is going to be from them realizing they need to work on improving on the mat not by adding riding time.   Riding time will only award you 1 point for an entire match worth of work.  The takedown andcut approach will award you tons of points during the same amount of time.  Even if you add riding time most takedown artists are not going to all of a sudden start riding and trying to turn more.  They will still realize taking down and cutting is a much faster way to rack up points and show off some fancy moves too.  However, they will not realize all the mat time they wasted by using this strategy without first attempting some down position moves.  Until the college bound high school kids realize its not a "takedown clinic" show for the crowd and actually want to start working on improving from all positions he's never going to be as prepared as he could have been for college wrestling.    Metcalf was pointed out as an example earlier in the thread and I can use him here.  He does do a lot of takedowns but also will put in some hardcore top work during the match and has made sure he can escape with ease.  Since they will never make cutting someone illegal the only thing that can help these kids prepare for the next level is to realize they are going to have to put in time and work from all positions not just be the best takedown artist in the area.

  12. MattM,

Looks like somebody read my web page and is fishing for answers?

Smart of you to take down the original webpage that had tons of dates and information.  Though it makes my research on other matter not connected with the contest a little harder.

  13. Dougs a good wrestler but he sometimes stalls alot

Coming from the guy with J Jaggars picture for an avitar.  I believe he's found his way through a few college matches with some selective wrestling.  ;D  Some very slick cradles though.
