  1. Not sure what the films goal is from the clip other than the general "teen anxed."   However, it look like they used some legit cinematography on it.  Are we going to see this one shopped around the film festival circuit in the near future?

  2. Unfortunately I think most voters are not effected or are not as concerned as they should be about the current school funding issues.  It the idea of screwing the future over since none one is concerned about it just tosave the present to make voters happy.  Because of this I think the state government will be able to continue cutting education items up without a huge backlash.  Leading to local school boards stop the bleeding a fast way instead of the best way.

Until the public makes it a major issue education will continue to be something we can throw to the wayside .  It just not something enough voters choose to make a priority at this point to the point many don't want to see their money get paid more into it.  If enough did the concerns over school cuts would have been an issue way before the decisions were made to remove teachers and cut programs.

  3. You are right, he resigned when he learned his job was cut at the high school.  Here is the article

    http://www.greenfieldreporter.com/articles/2010/04/14/sports/01.txt

Probably the biggest coaching name as far as developing a program available right now.  If a school around the Indy area has a teaching opening for him they are getting great coach and teacher here.  I'd sure love for him to move back to his home town and help out.  ;D

  4. MattM, are you going to be able to make it up to watch the wrestling?

It sure would be nice to do.  I really don't make it up past Indy to see much wrestling (though I should more).  This weekend I'm booked up with a freestyle event I'm taking the club too and a family event after.

  5. I don't know how you guys can just hate on Silva, I mean hes clearly the best fighter in the WORLD right now.....  I am not a fighter, but im sure it is difficult to fight someone who wont fight back...  Maia had no intention of fighting Silva all he wanted to do was lay on his back the entire fight.. If Maia landed a punch he would instantly go to his back bold strategy  :-\  Yeah the fight wasn't impressive, but that is what happens when nobody in the world is on your level, it takes no effort for Silva to defeat the opponents he has been facing.  If you watched the fight you would know that Silva could have ended the fight whenever he wanted he knocked Maia down 4 times in the first 2 rounds with leg kicks.

Who's next??   I mean I would love to see a fight between GSP and Silva completely contrasting styles it would make for a great fight.  The problem is that Silva cuts to make 205 cuts even more to make 185 and seeing as GSP wont go up to 185 it looks like Silva would have to cut to 170, which probably will never happen.   It is very unfortunate that GSP has nobody to fight at his weight and that Silva has nobody to fight at either 185 or 205..  we know that Silva Machida wont happen.... so lets see Silva move up to HWT and take on some people that actually stand a chance.

Or maybe the UFC can sign someone like Gegard Mousasi and have Silva fight him.............   Just my opinion on things its hard to impress people when your so much better than everyone, and your expected to have a spectacular knockout everytime you go out there.

I don't recall Maia laying on his back most of the fight.  Yes he did try to pull guard multiple times in the fight.  But most of this was only after Silva danced around and did little else most of the fight. In fact much of the time he was standing or moving slowly forward towards Silva when he even admits standup is not his game.  He's not going to go full force into anyone from a stance but he was still tried to engage Silva who was content with striking once and then dancing around.   Heck the punch/kick count of the first few round I could almost count on one hand which shows Silva was just playing around.  If he's that good (which he is) then put together some combination and finish the fight.  He doesn't feel its worth standing and striking with a much lesser opponent then take it to the ground and show that your BBJ is as good as you always say it is.  Silva would hit one quick strike and then dance the entire fight.   He was was content with just playing around and not actually fighting.  Sure he may be the best in the world but you show that by how you fight not by screwing around the entire fight because you feel the guys isn't up to your level and shouldn't be in the fight.

You may want to read or watch any of Dana White's comments about this contest.  He even said it was the most disappinted he had ever been after a title fight.  Then went on to say he would rather people say they wont buy fights because Silva finishes them to fast than for people say they wont buy because of what Silva did against Maia.  Later on during an interview he said if it happened againthat bad he would cut Silva even if he was the P4P best in the world(most respectable thing I have heard Dana say if he actually would do it)..  Sounds like Silva's boss feels the same ways as most of the fans and reporters do about this match.  Now I don't expect Silva to finish the fights in 10sec. but at least show you are very skilled by doing multiple attacks from stand up and on the ground then just finish it.  Instead he tried to humilate Miai but all that did was highlight your dance skills and make it a 5 round embarassment for Silva.  Heck the crowd was chanting the guys name who was getting picked appart and then GSP's name who wasn't even in the fight.

As I mentioned before I think Silva is just over the grind of things when he doesn't have a worthy opponent to face  (like Penn is sometimes). To me that should be retiring or at least taking a long break from fighting.  Instead he seem content with acting like a fool and keeping lesser talented fighters in the contest.

  6. MattM, you have some good thoughts.   Personally, I would love to see FS/GR go much longer.

However, I recall two issues from a previous discussion on this topic.  First, a number of Indiana high schools have graduations the 3rd or 4th weekend in May.  A number of Indiana colleges have graduation the 2nd or 3rd weekend in May.

Second, if memory serves, the Central Regional is consistently on the 3rd or 4th weekend in May.

There were just too many conflicts going later than the 1st weekend in May.  Please correct me if I'm wrong.

The information I have been consistantly given says the major issue is the State Fairgrounds are only avaiable to us at that time and its to good of a deal too pass up.  While it a good reason I also think it is holding up the sport a little.

Good point that late May HS graduation is a problem with adding add 4 weeks to the season.  I agree with that.  But I still think adding 2 extra weeks onto the season though should not effect any high school graduations.

I guess some of my point was other states seem to have a different set up that seem to be working to help them improve.  I would guess that a big reason some of those state are doing well in wrestling is a connected with the adjustments and changes they made several years ago which are paying off now.   Obviously, some of their programs wouldn't be a good fit for Indiana because of how our state works but I'm sure a few state do ideas that could help us.

  7. I've mentioned it before but I would love for the freestyle/greco season to add another 2 weeks to a month before state finals.

I think this would would help coaches and athletes make the transition between styles better.  At this point by the time new kids finally start to get used to the freestyle/greco training the season is over.  Especially when you add in the two weeks of meets over spring break several kids end up missing.  Other state go deep into May and I think it helps develop more wrestlers as well as better prepare those going to national events in the summer.

It would give more chances to spread the meets out so maybe we could get a system where one meet was held in each region every weekend.  Currently because of time constraints I think we have some weeks where some areas have 3 meet close together while others don't have any.  You add 2-4 weeks to the calander and I think more school could spread the meet schedule out with the ISWA helping to keep it organized.

Yes, I fully understand the state fairgrounds is only available at certain times and its a great deal to get so that is the primary reason the season ends when it does.  But this is still something I think would be great if we could find the right fieldhouse/arena type venue.

I also have wondered if have fully examined other top state USA Wrestling groups. I would think looking into how they have set up their yearly calender and what they do to organize or structure their system when it comes to meets and clubs could also be helpful.  I'm guessing we have heard about some of these things before.  But how much have we looked into the details and tried to impliment them into Indiana's system.

Over all I think the ISWA is doing a good job of keeping things going.  However, that is for the most part just keeping things on course.  I'm not sure how to fix it but just staying on course may not be the best way to catch up to or keep up with other top wrestling states.

  8. I was also a bit disappointed that the event wasn't actually live. My son knew that BJ got beat earlier in the afternoon and I told him not to tell us anymore results. I feel that UFC owes me some money... :o

Well when its in the exact opposite side of the world that makes it hard to do it live at a time that works for both areas.  I do agree the tape delayed shows need to be at a reduced price (or free on Spike as has been in the past) since you could find tons of  information on it prior to the viewing.  At that point its almost like a replay of the event.  But, if the UFC think it can get money out of the average fan who doesn't even realize its not live then they will.

  9. Here is an interesting perspective on the PPV

    http://www.sherdog.com/news/articles/UFC-112-Post-Mortem-Spider-Squashed-Underdog-Special-More-23787

I still like Silva when he is on game but his preformances as of lately have not been anywhere up to par.  As mentioned in the article the fans are growing tired of the new Silva.  At this point something thing needs to change soon (new wieght, bring in fighters, attitude adjustment, etc.) for him to gain some of his reputation back.  If not maybe he should retire (as he hinted about before) if he is in fact getting sick of the grind.

  10. 1st Place Match

Jason Tsirtsis (Indiana) over Blaise Butler (Illinois) Dec 4-2,7-0

Jason wrestled at 63 kg/138.75 lbs.

    Thus via themat.com

In certain weight classes (46 kg, 54 kg, 63 kg, 76 kg, 100 kg) the FILA Cadet National Championships is also a U.S. qualifying event for freestyle for the Youth Olympic Games.

Competing in the FILA Cadet Nationals is the first step in making the U.S. team for the Youth Olympic Games. The champions must also compete in a Pan American Qualifier in Mexico to qualify for Singapore.

  11. Silva is simply uninspired to work hard at defending his title.  He's basically turning into the type of fighter BJ Penn usually is.  Unless you give him a really good reason to get prepared for a fight physically and mentally for a fight he will just mail in the training and squeek out an average victory.  Sure a lot of it has to do with the lack of quality opponents for him to face, but it still disappointing to watch a lack luster preformance.  This carefree approach may eventually catch up to him against the right fighter as it has from Penn in the past.

  12. I thought we were talking about "TODAY." Who are the mosy influentual people in Indiana TODAY...

Does Mac do anything for BG anymore? Mac's a legend but he's done and has been for years. Coack Morris has withdrawn too and I expect to see less of him after Duncan is gone. That's a guess, but I bet it's a good one. Bill Bane is one of the greatest men I've ever known. But these guys belong on another list. With the exception of Coach Morris, a guy who could have a HUGE Jim Humphrey-sized impact on Indiana wrestling if he could/would make the time commitment.

A lot of these guys being mentioned have had a tremendous and lasting impact on the sport, but they're hardly influencing the direction of the sport  in Indiana today.

I'm guessing Guru would be voting for 2 lists.

"Most Influencial to restlings Growth In Indiana"

"Biggest Impact on Wrestling Today In Indiana"

  13.

Very true.  Let's wrestle 2-3 matches and go home is now the cry when it used to be a kid/parent was proud when they could say they had the biggest weight class and they wrestled nine matches and they were the last people out of the building.

While it is true some may want to go home and enjoy a little daylight I do believe most want to wrestled several time before doing it.  Most kids want to get the first match done in the first hour and then have a match about every 30min there after.  Obviously in most event this just isn't happening.  The big issue I have been hearing parents/wrestlers complain about during events are the 1.5-2 hour waits for the first match and then the 1-1.5 hour wait between matches.  When you have 2 matches done and in the mdidle of your 4th hour there it does start to wear on you and your parents.  In most cases I don't blaim the people running the event because they are trying to manage the chaos that comes with a huge group of wrestlers (in multiple age groups), the crowd, thier inexperiance table help, and this is all packed in a gym that sometimes isn't big enough.  It the just what happens when you have a lot of people want to participate in your event.  However, I think they can find ways to curb some of the problem before they start as I will mention below.

I think most want a good 5 or so  matches but would like to either sleep in a little before showing or be out the door before its dark.  My comment on a different theard about spliting the age groups start time in the traditionally big events would be helpful for this.  It would help cut the wait time dramiatically, the crowding dramatically, the confusion dramaticalyl, and still allow wrestlers to get several matches in and not take from 7am-7pm to do so.  Not to mention the tournament still will get the same attendence without a fire marshall size crowd and constant complaints.  Obviously for traditionally smaller tournaments this isn't needed but for the bigger ones it would surely help.

  14. A nice ISWA list here to consider.  Some already on Drooke's list.

    http://www.iswa.com/iswalife.html

I have noticed that a number of former UofI coach Terry Wetherald wrestlers are now influencing Indiana wrestling in some compacity or another around the state.  Having a hand in influcencing many good athletes to continue helping wrestling in Indiana past college is worthy of some notice.  Not to mention his sucessful career as a coach.
