  1. Howe in HS: 2,1,1,1

    How in College: 2,1,?,?

Could have the exact same results.  Greatest wrestler in Indiana history.

You'll have to leave a space in the College list for an Olympic Redshirt year.  Hopefully even a spot on that years squad (and if we get lucky maybe another IN wrestler can join him).

  2. Would love to see a 30 for 30 documentary on Gable and the rise of Iowa wrestling, much like they did with Miami football.  That would be awesome.

Not sure anything can or would compared to "The U" documentary about Miami football.  It was a unique look at a unique group.  But you would think ESPN would use the sucess of those programs to continue seeking out and showing quality sports documentaries.  They already have one on Iowa  "The Season" and one on Brandon, FL when they ended their win streak.  So it wouldn't to be hard to show them as part of a new season of Documentary shows and then seek out more if the popularity is there.  I just hope ESPN can see the benifit of continueing such a program instead of it being a one time thing.

  3. Thanks for the list MatChick.  I've seen the trailer for a few of those before but others are new to me.

I was really hopeing that the Big 10 Network would take a chance at a wrestling team for their series "The Journey."  They have improved their wrestling programing on the network.  However, there is a limit to the amount of none wrestlers who will sit and watch those matches since they have little understand of the sport or connection to individual athletes.  However, a show dedicated to the behind the scenes aspect of wrestling training and athletes as they prograss through the season could draw a wider audiance of people.  I can see the average viewer being intreged by the training, interested in the uniqueness, and drawn in by the pre-match drama that goes into a wrestling season.  Big 10 network viewers are going to watch basketball and football in big numbers on the network anyway.  Why not develop a show around a lesser sport (same with a show on girls volleyball in the fall and baseball in the spring) to try to increase viewership of that sports programs.  Just imagine watching the development of a team like Penn State, Iowa, Minnisota, ....and see them progresses through the season as they try to get a Big 10 and NCAA title.  Seems like that would be as intersting as the basketball or football team practices they usually highlight.   Wish someone at the Big 10 network had enough wrestling pull to give it a chance.

Also, with how popular ESPNs 30/30 documentary video series was this year I would think they would want to develop a yearly show based around sports documentaries.  If this occured a few of these and previous wrestling documentaries may be great selections for one of the episodes.

  4. Unfortunately, wrestling movies will always have a hard time pulling in the box office numbers to get a studio to put a lot of effort in to making one mostly based on the sport aspect of things.

A while back someone took my idea for a wrestling movie when they made "The Rookie."  For those of you who forgot or did nto watch it this is the one somewhat based on a true story where a school teacher/coach was given a second chance to make the baseball big leagues.  I had a similar idea back in high school for a wrestling movie.  A former wrestler who had to give it up early in his college career due to major injury.  But after working with a local high school team later in life he was talked into participating in some freestlyle tournaments by them.  After doing well they kids enter him in to the Olympic Trials (for the sake of the audiance understanding we skipped the nationals qualfier)  to see if he has what it takes.  He trains hard to not be embarassed and goes to it just for fun to see if he can win a few.  But ends up doing well.  Runs into some of his former college competition he had battled with (now World Medalists) in the finals round to see if he would make the US Olympic team.   But after "The Rookie" was made I'm guessing that idea would be looked over by the studios since its been done and wrestling isn't the draw like baseball is.

I would love to see more wrestling related movies hit the mainstream.  But you need a quality script, some decent star power, and a big studio push to get people interested in a sports based movie about something they know little about.

  5. Great strength, very good speed, tremendous balance, technique of middle weight.

I will say in most cases once we hit state most of the HWT have more of this description.  In semi-state the true wrestlers begin to eliminate the belly bumper who only developed one move to score off of.  We may not see to many crazy scrambles and athletic moves, but the technique and movements of the state level HWTs is much more on par with solid wrestling.

  6. I'd believe its noteworthy to mention that Kayla Miricle making it onto 103 is the firs time that a female has ever made any notable rankings (unless Sarah H. made it once last year) for the state of Indiana.  We will see how it all pans our for her come the state series, but most people are noticing to take her seriously as a lightweight wrestler.

  7. I'm all for letting these kids get to their junior year or at least well into their sophmore year before we start labeling them the next phenom of Indiana wrestling.  Some of these young guys may be good but lets let them develop without adding more pressure or giving them to much of ego complex.   Sure we should recognized some of these young Hoosiers as being tough wrestlers and evn point out they have the potential to help out their high school team one day, but I'd restrain from building up the hype train too much until they have had a chance to mature.  Once they can prove themeselves a few years against the best HS kids in Indiana then we can talk if their name should be among the best that have ever walked on the mat in Indiana.

  8. Good dual both teams had me on my feet in my room the whole time...Great job cavmen

Well Fabio you knew it was a done deal when RZA was recruited this morning from EMD to replace Pat Day in the line up.  That Tiger Style is hard to stop at 215.  :)  Sounds like classic down to the wire Mish vs Penn dual we will be growing accustom too hearing about for the forseeable future.

  9. What schools have snow days today?  That equals an extra pound for any tournaments starting on Friday right?

The AD of the event would be in charge of coordinating that information.  He/she is usually the person responsible for find out if any of the participating schools in a contest were unable to have an organized practice today due to weather issues. Then based on that information he/she would then contact the teams involved to explain if a pound allowance was awarded based on the circumstances.

  10. Looks like it was a beatdown!!!

Yup.  The play by play basically said the same as the score.   Northwestern is a soild team but it sounded like the Hoosier just couldn't find a way to put anything together last night.  Even the IU winners did seem to have things going their way.  LaBlanc's started out geat but his guy closed the gap to prevent a major, Powless had to battle from behind to get the win, and Alcala had a moble match at HWT but it was far past decided at that part.  Hopefully they can find their way back on track at this weekends duals.

  11. I actually thing there are enough former athletic stars with wieght issues they could have probably done some type of special biggest loser competition with an average person and a athlete as partners.  That would help boost the rating up a notch as they go into their 10th or so season.

  12. Easy money on him being winner!!!!!!

I have had to suffer through a few nights of this show when my wife has the remote and I was doing work.

Few things are working against him winning it all.

He may have gained in the fat department but he also has a ton of muscle underneath that will hurt him reach the major weight cut numbers.

When it comes down to voting the lowest two off many times they remove the person they feel has the start to do the rest of it at home on their own.  I'm guessing Rulon will fit into that catagory if placed up against another candidate other participants also like.

I would hope by now the other contestants have learned to removed the "athletic" guys early if they have a chance to win since its more a game than a weight loss camp.  If not it usually means the "atletic" ones keep working hard, dropping decent numbers, and usually make it to the end.

I hope he is able to get himself back to a good weight for his health, but I don't quite see him winning unless the other participants just drop the ball.

  13. I always liked the idea of a list similar to the classic Billboard Music Chart where they had an arrow for those who moved up (no need for all the arrow down adjustments that would then follow) and a different color for the new additions to it.  Something visual that stands out and lets a person see the major changes eaier.  However, I'm sure that just adds more time to the  organizing the list, so I can see why it wouldn't be an ajustment that needs to be done.

  14. This is not the only criteria for determining where to have the Olympic Team Trials.  However, USA wrestling has said it is trying to see what area will get the most attendence by seeing what city has fan support.  It wouldn't hurt to show your support for someplace close to IN.

Vote located at the top of the International Section.

  15. Boomsma over Shepard has to be a notable win.

Yes, I would agree it is definitely a notable one especially if it was a huge scoring difference.  But as mentioned that info has to be in the hands of the RC from multiple sources or at least one credable one prior to the updates.  It may help him in the next update, but I'm guessing he didn't have it available for this last one.  Not sure who is or isn't getting this information in as it occurs, but the more provided the easier its is to make a good decision on how to move people around.

  16. This is what gets me. We get no credit for strength of schedule. Our county seeding meeting is tomorrow night. Two years ago a kid from a school who wrestles no ranked teams other than in the county tournament got seeded above our kid who was 9-2. He was 10-1. We draw keiffer first rd and were out of the county after rd one(no first rd wrestlebacks). We tech falled that same kid in the sectional. In the first period. Yet I will bet the house tomorrow night our tournament director will put no stock on schedule even the it's in the criteria. Maybe you guys should come to county seeding meeting. It's a fun one.

Things like individual and team rankings are somewhat subjective and make it hard to fit into an actual seeding criteria.  Yes our individual and team rankings are usually decently put together, but its is still somewhat subjective none the less.  The best you could do was convince the other coaches agree to vote (if this is agreed upon before hand) if they believe a wrestlers true ability superseeds the criteria making him deserving of a higher seed. The problem is that true ability may also be a subjective in some people minds which means not all the coaches may vote the same way if they haven't a solid knowledge of that kids ability.

  17. Looks like several of these guys don't have anything listed under Noteable Wins and Losses.  This may be the reason the RC hasn't been able to move them up the rankings much and in some cases they have moved slightly down in the rankings.  If the information is not their vs. decent opponents he is probably at the point where he has to give some credit to those guys who he has heard has had some solid wins.  It makes it hard when only sparadic information comes in so make sure someone valid is getting solid information prior to ranking changes  and these guys should get the respect they deserve in the rankings.
