Any other updates?
-
Heard Merrillville beat Penn 35-34. Anybody have any updates?
I believe that was their "A" team.
-
Don't be surpised by Penn's # 1s showing up.
Do you know where the other varsity will be at?
-
Merrillville also had 4 pins that won't count towards team points.

Must be the Black Plague
+1

Rumor is that Hudkins didn't make weight.
Don't they move the 2nd, 3rd and 4th from that semi state up and the 4th place would be a forfeit?
-
How did #4 seed Black of Hobart receive a forfeit?
-
Forgot about Sands. And yes Swallow was tough not sure if he ever qualified. I'm pretty sure he won several iswa state titles.
-
Mike Krzyston of Andrean qualified. Can't anyone remember the last time an Andrean wrestler qualified for state?

Thanks for the advice. i appeciate it. This isnt my first kid in state though thanks. I ran advanced practices for a long time now, and have had many come through my wrestling room. This is my first year at Hobart though. You will here my loud voice every year from now on. if you want i can personal message you so you can proof read em first since your so involved with what my wrestlers and i do. He likes the thought of a target on his back. even though you think it is a bad idea, he loves it. Now people like you who have awful opinions know who he is when none of you did before this year. Welcome to the coach bell hour. I will bring more kids into the lime light next year as well. If you havent noticed, i put a buzz around brendan that wasnt there before. Now he has started getting noticed by people who never would have even cared. He is just fine. You on the other hand like to think that you know the situation, but just give bad advice instead. See you at State this weekend, and next year, and the year after that, and the year after that. You get the picture. I will be around for a while producing state qualifiers and hopefully champions. I just hope you are still around to talk smack about 14 year olds. See you then genius.
Good to see Coach Balash is leaving the Hobart program in good hands.

Sorry but it's never going to change because it would still be in imperfect system. In this weight class there is a clear cut Number 1 and 2 but in many other weight classes it's not that easy to determine. Take 106 for example. I think one loss Reitz is the #1 in this class but i'm pretty sure Cathedral coaches would love to argue that their undefeated Bailey should be seeded #1.
So you would have to determine seeds, in a meeting with coaches from all over the state in an already short week where someone will always be unhappy.
I guess we need to be greaful that Micic and Lee get to meet in the Semis rather then Friday night.
I agree it would be impossible to seed most weights. Could you imagine that seeding meeting?

Stop getting off track. They are not changing to that anytime soon. They could change the alternate criteria next year.
There is a better chance that we get full wrestle backs before they change the criteria they way you suggested. And we know that we aren't going to get wrestle backs anytime soon.
I think this is low on the priority list. It just doesn't affect that many wrestlers.

One of the greatest things about the sport of wrestling is that of the 56 kids who qualified for State out of the Merrillville Semistate on Saturday, not a single one of them gives a rat's ass what the people on this site think of them or their chances of winning, placing, or showing this weekend. Good Luck to all 56 of them!!
I agree coach and I'm sure most if not all of their coaches have told them not to pay any attention to this until after sat.
But it gives us not getting ready to wrestle or coach this weekend something to do while we patiently wait for Friday.

Greg Larsen was a great freestyle wrestler he was as smooth as anyone in freestyle. Not sure how many freestyle state titles he had maybe someone from Hanover could answer. I would guess over 10-12. For the people that saw him during freestyle I don't think it was that big of a surprise.

"but I hope I would've given Torres the match."
That was not an option given to the coach or the wrestler. The trainer stepped in and said he was unconscious and is done, the referee stepped in and said match over. No chance for coach or wrestler to make a decision. When jake was in training room he asked to forfeit the match to Torres. I am not sure how we could have done anything differently. We feel aweful for Torres and his family that his season ended this way.
You are correct coach in the training room it's to late to forfeit the match. And I don't think any referee would tell you on the mat that you have the option to medical default to Torres. But I may be wrong and it would have to be a decision made on the spot to forfeit the match to Torres. I'm sure if you told the referee you wanted to medically default the match they would allow it. Maybe a referee could clarify this.

Looking thru brackets looks like crown point had a rough day?
Some tough draws for them Akers was leading Johnson from Merrillville before Johnson came back in the 3rd great match. Fuqua was definitely the 3rd best wrestler yesterday but also a tough draw. Covaciu wrestled a great match against Fuqua. And I didn't see Donaldson's match until he was on his back and pinned. Definetly a tough day for them.

That was the best ive seen Micic all year he dominated Davis 19-5 going in to the third. He looked so fast every takedown he was looking for back. Not to put down Evansville but Johnson had beat Molloy at al smith and Davis is a stud. Micic dominated better wrestlers.
He got in on the legs so quick and deep they had no chance of defending those shots. Very impressive day for Micic.

Sportsfangms: Nice break down of a great day of wrestling.
Just a couple other thoughts. Torres did have have hartman's arm pinned. Not sure if that makes a difference. He did land on that trapped shoulder. My opinion is that it was close but I would not have called it a slam. I'm not sure what I would of done in that situation but I hope I would've given Torres the match.
Overall I pretty good day for the region. Merrillville had 6 qualifiers. CP and Lowell both had 3 and Hanover central and lake central both had 2. The region also had 7 champs.
On a lighter note Cosgrove has to get the best dressed coach for the first 2 rounds. Every year we talk about cool singlets but Bates from south bend Washington had the coolest socks of the day. They were bright green with "170" down one side and "BATES" on the other sock. Also I think Harrison appeared to have the most coaches probably 12.

If he gets to wrestle, he finishes top 8 in my opinion. I hated how his coaches went about hyping Black, but the kid is good.
He will draw a semi state champion.
-
is there still the possibility of a BLACK OUT??? I see Hartman wins by DQ of Torres then InjDf out to 4th...how hurt is he and this would make Black the Alt.??? just wondering
According to the NWI times coach Hartman said he believes his son had a concussion.

At Merrillville Covaciu vs. Fuqua

With the use of trackwrestling, which is awesome by all means, it has kind of taken the fun away of completing brackets while watching the matches unfold. Just a random thought for the day since I am up early and couldn't sleep much before today's Regionals.
Maybe Calumet should go back to the old way. They seemed to struggle with track wrestling.
-
The calumet regional started late. They are currently at the 145 final.

The bottom line is that on that day Merrillville's varsity beat Penn's varsity. I don't think you will get any excuses from Harper just like you didn't hear any from Maldonado when they lost to portage.
I think many teams are not at full force this time of the year.
