  7. WRESTLING: Red Devil grapplers grab HHC crown By MIKE HUTSELL Mike.Hutsell@newsandtribune.com FOR PICTURES GO TO: http://www.news-tribune.net/highschoolsports/local_story_018014345.html?keyword=topstory Jeff Wrestlers grab 7 Individual Titles JEFFERSONVILLE ? Danny Struck has been involved with the sport of wrestling since his days in high school. After Saturday, the Jeffersonville High School coach can finally call himself something he never has before ? a conference champion. The Red Devils collected seven individual championship and racked up 263 points as they outdistanced second-place Jennings County for the first conference title in Struck?s tenure as Jeff coach. ?I never won one of these as a wrestler, never even made a final,? said a smiling Struck after his team collected the first-place trophy. ?Unbelievable job by the guys, they really wanted this and the credit goes to them.? Jeff?s winners included Curtis Smith (112 pounds), Renaldo Weekly (125), Coty Hendricks (145), Alex Bailey (152), Caleb Browner (171), Tyler Tatgenhorst (189) and Jon Clark (285). ?Four of our guys were seeded first and you always want to see them be able to win,? said Struck. ?What?s great is having three other guys come out with wins when they weren?t seeded to do so. Caleb, Renaldo and Curtis were not seeded to win and they did. Jon Clark has been out 10 straight matches and on crutches ? he just came back today and was able to come out on top.? Jennings County scored 200 points in placing second. Floyd Central ended the day in third place with one individual champion in Aaron Witt at 130. He beat Joe Reitman of Jennings County in the championship by a 6-3 decision. The Highlanders had a pair of runner-up finishers in John McAndrew (171) and Garrett Blackman at 135. New Albany placed fifth, led by Tim Martin ? who won the title at 119. Hoosier Hills Conference Meet Team scores ? 9. Wrestling Jeffersonville, with four top seeds, is favored on paper to win the Hoosier Hills Conference title when the Red Devils host the conference matches tomorrow. Jeff's top seeds are Alonzo Shepherd (30-7) at 103 pounds, Alex Bailey (27-8) at 152, Tyler Tatgenhorst (31-5) at 189, and Jon Clark (18-1) at heavyweight. Floyd Central, which beat Jeff in the HHC Duals this season, has three top seeds: Garret Blackman (19-4 at 135), Ben Moberly (26-7 at 145) and John McAndrew (23-4 at 171). New Albany has two No. 1 seeds: Tim Martin (23-3 at 119) and Jonathon Gary (17-7 at 125). Castle won the 25th annual Old Capital Classic last week at Corydon, scoring 431 team points. Floyd Central was fourth with 257. Jeffersonville went 2-3 in the Franklin Invitational. Brett Walker (130 pounds) and Caleb Browner (171) were undefeated during the tournament. Providence's Ethan Cook is ranked seventh at 189 pounds in the latest Indiana High School Wrestling Coaches Association poll. Clark is No. 3 at heavyweight. Other ranked wrestlers include Charlestown's Jeff Stotridge (13th at 119) and Eddie Duran (13th at 125), and McAndrew (11th at 171).
  10. JEFFERSONVILLE Devils go 1-4 at Franklin: Jeff moved to 22-7 on the season after the weekend?s Franklin Invitation. The Red Devils lost to No. 18 Franklin (32-18), Holt, MI (39-12) and No. 5 Yorktown (54-16), while beating Indiana Deaf (65-0) and Brownsburg (45-28). Brett Walker and Caleb Brown went undefeated for Jeff, while Darien and Tyler Tatgenhorst each went 4-1. Tyler Tatgenhorst?s only loss came in overtime. ?Brett Walker and Caleb Brown put together the most outstanding performances of the tournament,? said Jeff coach Danny Struck. ?These two guys are ready for the state tournament.? The Red Devils now have just a single varsity dual before the postseason begins and Struck thinks his team?s tough schedule should pay dividends. ?All of our losses are to teams that are ranked in the top 20 or have been,? he said. ?Our kids responded well to the grueling schedule and know they are going to be prepared as well as they ever have been for this year?s Hoosier Hills Conference and state tournaments.? Jeff the favorites at HHC: Host Jeffersonville is the favorite at this weekend?s HHC tournament ? by the numbers, anyway. The Red Devils have four No. 1 seeds in the bracket, seven No. 2 seeds and are projected to score 167 points. Floyd Central, with three No. 1 seeds, is projected second at 120 points. The Highlanders beat Jeff this year in the HHC Duals, the only head-to-head meeting between the local rivals. ?Floyd has a great team,? Struck said. ?We look forward to competing in a healthy rivalry with them in the upcoming weeks.? For Jeff, Alonzo Shepherd is No. 1 at 103 pounds, Tyler Tatgenhorse is first at 189, Alex Bailey is seeded No. 1 at 152 and John Clark is top-ranked in the heavyweight class. Floyd Central will pin much of their hope on Johnny McAndrew (171), Ben Moberly at (145) and Garrett Blackman (135). New Albany is expected to finish sixth in the eight-team field and has two No. 1 seeds in Tim Martin (119) and Jonathan Gary (125).

  12. Jeff wrestlers beat Kentucky No. 1 Trinity Red Devils also take the Warrior Classic By Justin Sokeland jsokeland@courier-journal.com January 9, 2009 Jeffersonville High School's wrestling team defeated Louisville's Trinity, ranked No. 1 in Kentucky, 32-25 in a dual match Tuesday night at Jeffersonville. Winners of contested matches for the Red Devils included Devon Miller (119 pounds), Renaldo Weekly (125), Caleb Visser (135), Darien Tatgenhorst (140), Damon Dryden (145), Alex Bailey (152) and Coty Hendricks (160). "I was very proud of the way our kids responded," Jeff coach Danny Struck said. "This was a great win for our program. Our kids are riding high, and it's nice to see them improving at the right time of the year." Jeff improved to 20-4. Jeffersonville also won the 12-team Warrior Classic at Scottsburg last week. The Red Devils defeated Danville, Greencastle, Chatard, Southwestern and Jennings County during the first day of competition. On the second day, they beat Fort Wayne Concordia, Edgewood, Washington and Scottsburg, then tangled with defending tournament champion Columbus North in the final, beating the Bull Dogs 38-24. Jeff's Tyler Tatgenhorst (189 pounds) and Weekly both went 10-0 and won individual titles in their weight classes. Floyd Central went undefeated in the Valley Super Duals last week in Louisville, improving to 18-5 this season. The Highlanders will compete in the Old Capital Classic at Corydon tomorrow. The Hoosier Hills Conference tournament is scheduled for Jan. 17 at Jeffersonville. The state tournament series will begin Jan. 31.
  13. HS WRESTLING: Floyd rolling, not reeling in rebound season New coach, cast keep things rolling at FC By MATT CRESS Matthew.Cress@newsandtribune.com A new coach and the loss of the perhaps the most decorated wrestler in school history perhaps left many mat observers thinking this would be a down year for Floyd Central. They thought wrong. Heading into a crucial weekend where the Highlanders will meet Charlestown in a dual meet and travel to the highly-competitive Old Capital Classic in Corydon, Floyd has proven it is still among the elite in local wrestling. The Highlanders are 18-5 on the year after going unbeten at the Valley Super Duals in Louisville last Saturday. Though the departure of coach Rob Willman and promotion of assistant coach Brandon Sisson to the top spot and the graduation of state champion Cooper Samuels stung the program, the Highlanders have proven that their system still works. ?We all grew up in this program,? said Sisson. ?Rob didn?t change a whole lot when he took over and I haven?t changed a whole lot. It?s a proven product and it?s done its job.? One staple of the program that hasn?t changed is the always-tough schedule. Floyd suffered its first losses of the season ? to Lawrence North, Portage, Franklin and Westview ? at the Calumet Duals in mid-December. That was followed by a second-place finish at the Highlanders? own invitation on Dec. 20, a tournament that included wins over Corydon, Oldham County, South Oldham and Tipton, with the loss coming to champion St. Xavier. ?Cooper managed to go undefeated, but it?s very, very difficult for a kid to go unbeaten against our schedule,? Sisson said. ?We know that we?re going to take some losses, but we also know that we?re going to learn a lot.? Still, it?s not like Sisson?s cupboard was completely bare. Johnny McAndrew has had a solid season wrestling at 171 pounds, finishing third at the brutal Mater Dei tournament and drawing plenty of praise of his coach. He was also 7-0 during the Highlanders? clean sweep of Hoosier Hills Conference foes at the HHC Duals early in December. ?He?s been in some great matching with a lot of state-caliber kids and he has done very well,? Sisson said. Floyd has also seen the emergence of juniors Aaron Witt and Ben Moberly (145) and senior Garrett Blackman (135), who have become among the most dangerous have area grapplers. Both Witt and Moberly were unbeaten at the HHC Duals, while Blackman went 6-1. Sophomore Reed Emerson and Logan Kelly have also been essential to the Highlanders? success thus far, as the Floyd system continues to churn out enough talent to make the rebuilding year a forgotten concept ? no matter what people thought before the year began. ?Our team goals are to win conference, win sectional and regional and get our team to state,? Sisson said. ?Those are our goals every year regardless of where we?re at. It?s always unchanging.? The Highlanders will host Charlestown on Friday and the Old Capital Classic ? with a host of big-name schools like Heritage HIlls, Princeton, Columbus North, Castle and Zionsville ? will be held on Saturday. JEFFERSONVILLE This year?s Red Devils keep on accomplishing things that the school has never done before ? and this weekend was no exception. Jeff won the two-day, 12-team Warrior Classic at Scottsburg by beating Danville (50-6), Greencastle (46-6), Bishop Chatard (55-9), Southwestern (40-6) and Jennings County (38-18) on the opening day for a 5-0 start. On the final afternoon of the tourney, the Devils took down Fort Wayne Concordia, Edgewood, Washington and Scottsburg to set up a meeting with Columbus North in the finals. Devon Miller, Alex Baley, Coty Hendricks and Caleb Visser helped the cause with narrow one-point victories and Jeff overcame the Bull Dogs 38-24 to take the crown. ?This was a really good tourney for us,? said Jeff coach Danny Struck. ?We have been wrestling a grueling schedule and have taken second at three tourneys now. It was great for the kids to see their work pay off.? Tyler Tatgenhorst had another big meet for Jeff, going 9-0 at 189 to claim his third straight Warrior Classic title, and he even moved up to 215 to beat Greencastle?s Jacob Wright, the eventual champion in the weight class. Sophomore Renaldo Weekly was more of a surprise, as he went 10-0 to capture Jeff?s second individual title of the meet. It was Jeff?s first ever team title at the Warrior Classic, and also the school?s first win over Columbus North, a team state finalist last season.

  18. Jeff second, Bulldogs eighth at Jeff Invite Pirates have two individual champs BY JON REITER sports@newsandtribune.com JEFFERSONVILLE ? The Jeffersonville Red Devils came up short to Carmel again in the Jeff Classic wrestling tournament, but there still was plenty to celebrate. Three Red Devils captured individual championships in leading their squad to a runner-up finish in the 16-team field at William S. Johnson Arena Saturday. Caleb Browner (171 pounds), Tyler Tatgenhorst (189) and John Clark (heavyweight) all escaped by winning narrow decisions, but Jeffersonville still trailed Carmel in the overall points race when the results were tabulated, 238-199. ?As a whole, I think we did better,? Jeffersonville coach Danny Struck said. ?We were seeded to finished tied for first with Carmel, but Carmel always finishes better than what they seed. It?s great to have them come down here; it makes for good competition for us.? Struck also complimented the results of two other Red Devil grapplers, Renaldo Weekly (125) and Brett Walker (130), who finished fourth and third, respectively, but entered the tournament unseeded. ?To come in at this level unseeded and perform like they did was a good accomplishment,? Struck said. Another team that saw a good result in the tournament was Charlestown, which was one of the smaller schools in the Jeff Classic but posted a sixth-place finish with 169 1/2 points. ?We had three kids in the finals, and that is really good for us,? Charlestown coach Tom Kendrick said. ?I think we?re pretty satisfied with that.? The two Charlestown wins came from Jeff Stotridge (119), who pinned New Albany?s Tim Martin at the 3:58 mark, and Eddie Duran, who remains undefeated at 16-0 at the 125-pound level. Aaron May posted a runner-up finish for Charlestown at 135. The Charlestown wins were noteworthy because Stotridge sustained a right shoulder injury in a morning match, and Duran tore an abdominal muscle in his championship match against Carmel?s Evan Ackerman. "That?s the way this sport is,? Kendrick said. ?If you get hurt, you just have to keep going. You can?t tag someone in.? As for New Albany, the young Bulldog squad netted an eighth-place team finish with 105 1/2 points, led by Martin?s runner-up finish. New Albany also had a third-place finish along with a fourth, two fifths and a sixth. New Albany coach Eric Burres called the result acceptable and said his squad is gaining valuable experience each week. It was the first multi-team tournament of the year for the Bulldogs, Burres said. ?We probably won?t see a lot of these kids until regional or semistate if we?re able to get there,? Burres said. ?Our kids are still learning. This sort of competition is the best way for us to get better.? New Washington finished 14th in the tournament with 27 points. 25. ON THE SPOT: Jeff?s Browner has gone from JV to among area?s best in less than a year By MATT CRESS Matthew.Cress@newsandtribune.com http://www.news-tribune.net/highschoolsports/local_story_347030232.html Caleb Browner obviously believes that it?s not where you start as much as it is where you finish. And he doesn?t believe in short cuts. A 171-pound junior wrestler at Jeffersonville, Browner began last season on the junior varsity. By the end, he had collected an impressive list of hardware, including an individual championship at the prestigious Jeff Classic, and advanced all the way to semistate. It was without question a meteoric rise that surprised many mat observers. Everyone, it seems, except Red Devil coach Danny Struck, who cited Browner as among the hardest-working kids he?s ever coached. Soft-spoken and modest, Browner has used the momentum from his sophomore year and fully shed the underdog label. He is ranked in the state?s top 25 in his weight class and has opened this campaign with a 9-1 record. As part of its continuing ?On the Spot? series, The Evening News tracked Browner down at one place he is guaranteed to be found ? practice. QUESTION: Well, you?re one of those fake wrestlers, right? You like pro wrestling? It?s real you know. CALEB BROWNER: (laughs) ?I do watch (pro wrestling). I respect those guys, but I just look at it as entertainment.? Q: Do you participate in any other sports, or is it just wrestling for you? BROWNER: ?I play football, too. I?m a linebacker.? Q: Jeff had some struggles on the defensive side of the ball this season because of a lot of inexperienced players. Do you feel that you guys played to your potential as a unit? What about next season? BROWNER: ?You know, we played OK. But really we had the talent to play better. For next year, our defense has a chance to be pretty good. We lost a lot more players on offense than defense. We lost our quarterback (Jeff?s all-time passing leader, Edward Wright-Baker), so we?re going to need a quarterback to really step up for us.? Q: I?m sure people may disagree, but day-to-day there isn?t a more demanding sport than wrestling. Why do you put yourself through it? BROWNER: ?I don?t really have a clear answer, I just like it. It?s something that is just in you or it isn?t. It?s in me.? Q: How did you get started with the sport? BROWNER: ?My brother (Jeff freshman Brent Browner) got me into it. It was a plan they had or something. When he was in middle school, he left his money for a wrestling picture, so I had to bring it to him. The coach asked me my name and said I had to stay, and I haven?t left since.? Q: This is new territory for you, since the secret is definitely out. Did you realize you were an underdog last season? Do you prefer that role? BROWNER: ?I did feel kind of like the underdog. I kind of liked being in that position better. Now I get more worried and put more pressure on myself. I?ll say, ?I have to win this tournament, or come in second in this tournament.? Last year, I could just go all out and try different things because I was expected to lose anyway.? Q: You guys have a pretty solid team here (two other Devils, heavyweight John Clark and 189-pounder Tyler Tatgenhorst, are ranked in the top 10 of their respective classes), so what?s the end goal? BROWNER: ?We think that we are capable of going to state (as a team).? Q: That?s pretty lofty. It always seems like that?s Floyd Central?s role here in the area. Does the team ever discuss that? BROWNER: ?Sometimes the coaches or the guys will try to throw that out there. This is our year to beat them.? Q: So what do you do when wrestling is over? You take it easy in the spring? BROWNER: ?No, there?s always some conditioning for one of the sports that needs to be done. When I?m not doing that, I?m at work.? Q: Where do you work? BROWNER: ?At Derby Dinner Playhouse.? Q: That?s a really cool job. Do you get a chance to watch a lot of the shows? BROWNER: ?I?m a dishwasher, so I don?t really get a chance to see very much. They give us tickets, but I never use them. I usually give them to my mom so she can go.? CALEB BROWNER SCHOOL: Jeffersonville GRADE: Junior SPORTS PLAYED: Wrestling, football COACH?S COMMENT: ?Caleb is always in a good mood and that makes him a very hard worker. We always joke that if a wrestling match lasted an hour, Caleb would be state champ. It would take being out there for more than an hour to break him of his positive attitude.? ? Jeff coach Danny Struck
