All three of Jeffersonville?s representatives at the IHSAA Individual Wrestling State Championship at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis advanced to the quarterfinals on Friday with wins over their opening round opponents. In the 215-pound weight class, Jeff?s Jimmy Pratt defeated South Bend Clay?s Joe Gallegos, who was ranked fifth in the state, by a 3-2 tally. Pratt scored on Gallegos with a take-down in the first period and an escape in the second, then held on in the third period for the win. ?We always knew that Jimmy could be a state-place winner,? Jeffersonville wrestling coach Danny Struck said. ?He just had to believe in himself, and he did tonight.? At 112, Jeff?s Alonzo Shepherd knocked off Mitch Snyder of Hamilton Southeastern with a dominant 12-1 victory. ?Alonzo started the day saying, ?this place doesn?t look as big as it did last year,?? Struck said. Shepherd got up 4-1 in the first period with two takedowns. Twice Shepherd was able to turn Snyder for three points apiece, and took a reversal in the final period. Shepherd will face Paul Petrove of Hanover Central today. At 145, Renaldo Weekly continued his dominance by scoring three takedowns in the first period on Zionsville?s Adam Kern, and went up on Kern 12-2 before pinning his opponent at 2:56. Today, Weekly will wrestle Lacquan Lunford of South Bend Clay, the No. 3 wrestler at 145 in the state. ?The boys have looked ready tonight,? Struck said. ?They came in and warmed up at 3:30 (p.m.)... The rest of the entire state finals competitors just sat and watched them. They were ready to go right off the bat, and really showed that they are some of the best kids in the state.?

  6. http://newsandtribune.com/highschoolsports/x820636795/HIGH-SCHOOL-WRESTLING-Area-wrestlers-to-face-stiff-challenges-at-semistate February 8, 2011 HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING: Area wrestlers to face stiff challenges at semistate Jeff taking 11 wrestlers to Evansville; Floyd bringing seven By KEVIN HARRIS Kevin.Harris@newsandtribune.com The Jeffersonville News and Tribune Tue Feb 08, 2011, 11:42 PM EST > SOUTHERN INDIANA ? When any athlete competes in the postseason, he or she encounters tougher competition the further they advance in the state tournament. Wrestling is no different. Saturday at Roberts Stadium in Evansville, several high school wrestlers from the Clark-Floyd area will face some of the most formidable competition they have faced all season at the Evansville Reitz Semistate. The field in each semistate weight class includes wrestlers from some of the top teams in Indiana like Evansville Mater Dei, Evansville Reitz, Bloomington South and Center Grove. The Jeffersonville Red Devils have first-hand knowledge on how difficult it is to advance out of semistate. Despite the stiff challenges his grapplers face Saturday, Jeff head coach Danny Struck says his team is peaking at the right time. ?Last year, we took nine to semistate and got two through. We had a year where we got 10 to semistate and one got through,? Struck said. ?But I think one difference this year for our kids is that they are all starting to get comfortable at semistate. I have never had a group of kids that are all peaking at the right time, and all in such good spirits going into semistate.? The top four finishers in each weight division Saturday will qualify for the IHSAA State Finals, which will be Feb. 18-19 at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. The Red Devils will take a school-record 11 wrestlers to Evansville Saturday. Leading Jeff will be junior Alonzo Shepherd, who will attempt to qualify for his third state finals. Struck says Shepherd (44-1) has a favorable draw entering the 112-pound division at semistate. Shepherd will face Cloverdale senior Shawn Shipp (26-5) in the first round. ?Alonzo has a goal before graduating of (winning) a state title,? said Struck, who also thinks Shepherd?s drill partner at Jeff, senior Kevim Castro (36-9), got a good draw as well at 125. Struck says another Red Devil who got a favorable draw is Jimmy Pratt (29-4). The 215-pound senior will be making his second trip to semistate, as he searches for his first state berth. Pratt?s opening-round opponent will be Wood Memorial senior Dillon Tepe (31-10). ?He got a good draw, his conditioning is finally where it needs to be since his Christmas break knee surgery, and we are excited about him,? Struck said. One Jeff wrestler who faces a difficult draw is Renaldo Weekly (43-1) at 145. The senior, who is ranked fourth in the state at 145, will have a rematch with Mater Dei senior Sam Riggs (19-9) in the first round. Weekly edged Riggs by a 5-4 decision in last Wednesday?s Southridge Team Regional. If Weekly gets past Riggs, he will most likely square off against Bloomington South senior Ben Farmer (18-3) in the quarterfinals. Weekly has defeated Farmer twice this season, but both matches were close. Jeff?s other semistate qualifiers are Oscar DeLeon (21-24) at 119, Michael Vasquez (31-17) at 135, Tre Harbin (40-7) at 140, Brent Browner (36-12) at 152, Brandon Marlin (32-15) at 160, Elijah Curtley (28-3) at 189 and Ryan DeWitt (37-8) at 285. Struck thinks the Red Devils? regular-season schedule should get them ready for the semistate. ?There were times when kids on our team hated that they had more losses than kids they were beating,? Struck said. ?But due to the strength of our schedule, even kids with more losses than wins on their record make it to semistate. Our schedule prepares kids to win when the time is right, and we hope this weekend will again prove that to them.? Floyd Central?s best hope to qualify for state is 103-pound wrestler Terrence Kennedy (31-5). The sophomore will open the semistate against Sullivan junior Joseph Gilham (28-7). If Kennedy intends to win a semistate championship, he will probably have to face undefeated Bloomington South senior Jacob Boomsma (40-0) in the semifinals. Six other Highlanders will join Kennedy at semistate. They are Chris Whitley (27-11) at 112, Zach Thomas (4-3) at 125, George Emily (24-12) at 135, Chase Herron (26-14) at 145, Shane Sneed (22-13) at 171 and Andrew Sharp (28-12) at 285. Shortly after last Saturday?s Jeff Individual Regional, Floyd Central head coach Brandon Sisson said the draws would give him a better indication of each of his wrestlers? chances of advancing to state. ?Right now, it?s kind of out in the open,? Sisson said. ?We?ll know more when we find out who?s wrestling who.? New Albany will be taking four grapplers to Evansville. That group includes Austin Jamison (22-6) at 119, C.J. Reynolds (24-7) at 152, Zach Faith (28-8) at 189 and Jacob Mudd (11-4) at 285. Charlestown?s three semistate representatives are Cory Suddeth (28-11) at 152, Jacob Hall (33-8) at 160 and Ethan Bowen (35-6) at 171. Hall and Bowen each finished second at last weekend?s regional. Christian Academy of Indiana and New Washington will each have two wrestlers at semistate. Wrestling for the Warriors will be freshman Daniel Doty (25-14) at 103 and senior Cory Neel (28-9) at 130. The Mustang representatives are sophomore Brady Meenach (24-5) at 125 and freshman Jacob Franklin (26-16) at 160. Providence junior Brennan Gregory (29-12) will compete at 130. Gregory will have a tough first-round matchup, as he will square off against unbeaten Danville sophomore Neal Molloy (42-0). WRESTLING RUNDOWN CHARLESTOWN PIRATE TRIO MOVE ON IN POSTSEASON: Three Charlestown will be competing in Saturday?s semistate after advancing in the IHSAA state tournament at last weekend?s Jeffersonville Regional. Junior Brent Browner placed second at 152, sophomore Oscar DeLeon finished fourth at 119 and junior Michael Vasquez was fourth at 135. DEVILS FALL TO MATER DEI AT TEAM REGIONAL: Jeff?s dual-meet season came to an end last Wednesday, as it suffered a 58-7 setback to No. 2 Evansville Mater Dei in the Southridge Team Regional. Shepherd and Weekley were the Red Devils? only two match winners. Shepherd won the 112 match against the Wildcats? Evan Vibbert by major decision, 12-4. At 145, Weekly edged Mater Dei?s Sam Riggs by a 5-4 decision. Jeff head coach Danny Struck praised Curtley?s effort. The junior got the first two takedowns in his 189 match against the Wildcats? Josh Boots before getting pinning at the 5:12 mark. 8. http://newsandtribune.com/highschoolsports/x150254047/H-S-WRESTLING-Another-record-setting-day-for-Red-Devils February 6, 2011 H.S. WRESTLING: Another record-setting day for Red Devils Jeff has eight regional champions, 11 semistate qualifiers By KEVIN HARRIS Kevin.Harris@newsandtribune.com The Jeffersonville News and Tribune Sun Feb 06, 2011, 12:48 AM EST JEFFERSONVILLE ? Last Saturday, the Jeffersonville wrestling team had a record-setting day at the Jeff Sectional. The Red Devils won a school-record nine individual sectional championships to claim their third team sectional championship in a row, which had never been done in program history. On Saturday in the Jeff Individual Regional at Johnson Arena, more records went down for the Red Devils. Jeff had eight regional champions and 11 semistate qualifiers, both of which are school and Jeff Regional records. The top four finishers in each weight class advanced to next Saturday?s Evansville Reitz Semistate at Roberts Stadium. The records are another indication how far the Red Devil wrestling program has come since head coach Danny Struck took over the program during the 2002-03 season. ?During my first couple of years here, I was just happy to have a sectional champion,? Struck said. ?All of our seniors won a regional championship today, so that?s pretty exciting. I?m real excited and I?m excited about next year because three of our regional champs are coming back.? Leading Jeff was Alonzo Shepherd, who collected his third consecutive regional title. The junior won the 112-pound final by defeating Floyd Central sophomore Chris Whitley with a 5-3 decision. Red Devil seniors Renaldo Weekly and Jimmy Pratt each won their second straight regional title. Each of their victories in the finals were by pin. In the 145 title bout, Weekly pinned Jasper?s Nick Ackerman at the 4:52 mark. Pratt sealed the 215 final by pinning Paoli?s C.J. Andry at the 2:19 mark. It was Pratt?s second consecutive regional crown at 215. In the 125 title bout, Jeff senior Kevim Castro won his first regional crown by outlasting North Knox?s Cody Byrer with a 5-4 decision. Fellow Red Devil senior Tre Harbin defeated Washington?s Raulie Velazquez by a 17-5 major decision in the 140 final. In the 160 final, Jeff junior Brandon Marlin upended Charlestown?s Jacob Hall by a 3-1 decision. Red Devil junior Elijah Curtley needed 52 seconds to pin New Albany senior Zach Faith to win the 189 title bout. In the 285 final, Jeff senior Ryan DeWitt handed Mitchell?s Trevor Phillips his first loss of the season. DeWitt pinned Phillips at the 2:27 mark to win the regional crown. The other three Red Devil wrestlers to receive semistate berths were Oscar DeLeon (119), Michael Vasquez (135) and Brent Browner (152). Struck thinks some of his wrestlers? previous experience at semistate should help them next weekend. ?It?s real big when you?ve been there before,? Struck said. ?A lot of the first-year kids have the deer-in-the-headlight look. But five of our eight champions have been there before.? Floyd Central had seven grapplers earn their tickets to semistate. The Highlanders? top performer was sophomore Terrence Kennedy. He captured his first regional title by winning a 5-1 decision over Jasper?s Nathan Schitter in the 103 final. Floyd Central head coach Brandon Sisson lauded Kennedy?s and Whitley?s performances. ?He is one kid who improved tremendously in the offseason. He has a great chance to go to state,? Sisson said about Kennedy. ?Chris Whitley gave Alonzo a pretty good match. He is getting better every weekend.? The Highlanders? George Emily (135), Chase Herron (145) and Shane Sneed (171) each finished third. Placing fourth for Floyd were Zach Thomas (125) and Andrew Sharp (285). ?I think we wrestled pretty good,? Sisson said. ?A couple of them could?ve won, but overall we did pretty good.? Four New Albany wrestlers will go to Evansville next weekend. Faith and teammate Austin Jamison (119) each finished second, while the Bulldogs? C.J. Reynolds (152) and Jacob Mudd (285) both placed third. Jamison lost the 119 final to Pike Central senior Cody Kendle by an 11-6 decision. Hall was one of two Charlestown grapplers to finish second. The Pirates? other runner-up finisher was senior Ethan Bowen, who lost by a 3-1 decision to Jasper?s Joe Tucker in the 171 final. Charlestown junior Cory Suddeth placed fourth at 152. Christian Academy of Indiana had two semistate qualifiers. Senior Cory Neel, who won the program?s first-ever sectional title last weekend, ended up third at 130. Warrior freshman Daniel Doty earned his first semistate berth by finishing fourth at 103. New Washington?s Brady Meenach and Jacob Franklin each advanced to semistate. Meenach, a sophomore, placed third at 125. Franklin, a freshman, wound up fourth at 160. Brennan Gregory, Providence?s lone regional representative, stayed alive in the postseason. The junior placed fourth at 130. JEFF INDIVIDUAL REGIONAL (Top four finishers in each weight class advance to next Saturday?s Evansville Reitz Semistate. School key ? 9. WRESTLING - Jeffersonville controls the mat at regional http://www.courier-journal.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2011302050090 Courier- Journal Jeffersonville's wrestling program took a firm grip of the Jeffersonville Regional. The Red Devils sent nine wrestlers Saturday to the finals and won a school- and regional-record eight titles. ?I (used to) have to beg kids to wrestle,? Jeff coach Danny Struck said. ?Now I have great kids attracting great kids.? Struck said he was hoping for seven regional titles. He exceeded that number. ?I'm very excited,? he said. Overall, the Red Devils will send 11 wrestlers to the Evansville Semistate on Saturday at Roberts Stadium. The top four in each class made semistate. The Red Devils have come a long way since Struck arrived five years ago. ?In my first year, we were happy with a sectional winner,? he said. Jeff's top wrestler is senior Renaldo Weekley (43-1), ranked No. 4 in the state at 145 pounds. Weekley rolled to three wins with three pins. The Red Devils' first regional title came at 112 as junior Alonzo Shepherd edged Floyd Central sophomore Chris Whitely 5-3. Shepherd has won three straight sectionals and regionals. Shepherd, ranked No. 7 in the state, said the titles never get old, considering his humbling start in the sport. ?In my first two years of elementary (school) wrestling, I never won a match,? he said. ?I consider it (the wins) a blessing. With each match, I'm just happy I'm able to be out there.? Shepherd has his eyes on a state title. He qualified for the state last season but lost in the first round. ?I've been there,? he said. ?Now I want to do more than just get there.? Struck said he remembered the first time he saw Shepherd at tryouts, and Shepherd broke his hand. ?I didn't think he'd ever wrestle,? the Jeff coach said. Now Shepherd is one of the school's best wrestlers and one of three Academic All-Staters for the Red Devils, joining Tre Harbin and Elijah Curtley. All three won regional titles. Harbin (40-7) won at 140 pounds, besting Washington's Paulie Velasquez 17-5 in the finals. Curtley won at 189 pounds, pinning New Albany's Zach Faith just 52 seconds into the match. At 125, Jeff's Kevim Castro battled a cold but won his first title with a 5-4 decision over Cody Byrer of North Knox. ?I threw up a couple of times today,? said Castro, a native of Venezuela. ?But I felt good in the finals.? Last year Castro missed the regionals because of an ankle injury. For the Red Devils, the biggest surprise came at heavyweight as Jeff's Ryan DeWitt (37-8) handed Mitchell's Trevor Phillips (27-1) his first loss of the year with a pin at 2:27. In last year's regional, Phillips pinned DeWitt in the first round. ?I'm a better wrestler than I was last year,? DeWitt said. ?I've been working hard.? Floyd Central's only regional winner came in the first match as sophomore Terrance Kennedy beat Jasper's Nathan Schitter 5-1. The Highlanders have six additional regional qualifiers.
  10. HUNTINGBURG, Ind. ? The question in Wednesday's IHSAA Wrestling Team Regional at fabled Memorial Gym wasn't if second-ranked Mater Dei would win the title. The Wildcats were strong favorites and wrestled that way throughout, pounding Jeffersonville 58-7 in the semifinals even as defending champion Castle advanced on Doug Welch's pin in the last match for a 35-33 win over Jasper. Then Mater Dei ended the Knights' two-year run as regional champion by doing what it does, winning everywhere it's supposed to win in advancing 51-21. What remained unanswered was if there was a team out there that could stop Mater Dei (20-0 in dual meets) and would this bee the last time the Wildcats or anyone else battled for a state title via the dual-meet tournament, which will conduct its eight-team final for the 16th year on Feb. 26. "From everything I'm hearing, this is probably it," said Castle coach Bob Harmon. "As far as the IHSAA is concerned this is pretty much a done deal and we'll go back to the old big-meet format (with the team title decided at the individual state finals)." Mater Dei won a few championships that way, too, but nothing like what the Wildcats have done in the team tournament where they have taken 10 of the 15, including the first eight. The Wildcats last won in 2007. "I hope this isn't the end," said Mater Dei coach Greg Schaefer. "I don't even like to think about it." That said, the next question asked after Mater Dei's dominating performances on Wednesday was what would it take to beat the Wildcats at Center Grove High School when the team tournament resumes on Saturday, Feb. 26. "First of all, they're just better than we are," said Jeffersonville coach Danny Struck. "I haven't seen Crown Point (Mater Dei's first-round opponent at team state), but it all will depend on the matchups. "It's like us tonight. We started with some of our best guys at 189 and 215 and the Mater Dei kids both come from behind to beat us. We wrestled the Michigan (Holt) and Kentucky (Louisville Trinity) state champions and Mater Dei's the best we've seen. I hope they win." Castle's Harmon wondered about Crown Point, too, since that is Indiana's top-ranked team. "I haven't seen them, but I know people who have and Mater Dei will match up," he said. "They're solid, top-to-bottom, and right there with any of the best teams we saw up there the last two years. "You've got to have kids who won't give up bonus points to them." Mater Dei's depth is what impressed Blake Maurer, a four-time state champion with the Wildcats who's now an assistant coach at Jasper. "They're 14 strong, for sure," said Maurer, a mainstay on four team state champions. "Another thing is their depth. They've got at least 20 guys who can step in there." Then Maurer was asked what it would take to beat them. "You have to win the close matches, which we didn't do tonight against Castle," he said. "You have to be physical and wrestle with confidence. You can't be afraid."
  11. February 3, 2011 HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING: Devils fall in first round of regional Weekly, Shepherd earn wins in 58-7 loss to Mater Dei By GREG MENGELT Greg.Mengelt@newsandtribune.com The Jeffersonville News and Tribune Thu Feb 03, 2011, 12:02 AM EST SOUTHRIDGE ? Alonzo Shepherd at 112 pounds and Renaldo Weekly at 145 were Jeffersonville?s only winners in a 58-7 loss to third-ranked Evansville Mater Dei at Wednesday?s Team Wrestling Regional at Southridge. Shepherd, ranked seventh in the state, defeated Evan Vibbert in a major decision, 12-4. Weekly, ranked fourth in Indiana, edged Sam Riggs, 5-4. ?Overall, it was a great competition,? Jeff coach Danny Struck said. ?Mater Dei is potentially this year?s state champions, and for us to get to have competition before (Satuday?s individual) regional and (next Saturday?s) semistate is outstanding. It reminds us where we are and shows our weaknesses, so that we can make sure we work on them in the upcoming weeks.? Junior Elijah Curtley was pinned late against Josh Boots, who is ranked No. 3 in the state at 189 points, but not until after Curtley held a 5-2 lead in the final minutes of the match. ?We were very proud of Elijah,? Struck said. ?He got the first two takedowns in the match and showed that he can have an outstanding run at the state finals this year. He was fired up by the loss, and we think that will motivate him for regional.? Mater Dei went on to win the regional title with a victory over Castle, which had beaten Jasper in the other regional semifinal, in the championship match, 51-21. Because of weather around the state, the Southridge Regional is the only regional that took place on Wednesday. Most are rescheduled for tonight, but some have been pushed back to as late as next Wednesday. SOUTHRIDGE REGIONAL First Round Mater Dei 58, Jeffersonville 7 103 ? Seng (MD) pin Lucas 1:26. 112 ? 13. WRESTLING WEDNESDAY: Jeff to face tough task in Mater Dei at tonight?s regional By KEVIN HARRIS Kevin.Harris@newsandtribune.com The Jeffersonville News and Tribune Wed Feb 02, 2011, 12:28 AM EST > SOUTHERN INDIANA ? The Jeffersonville wrestling team will vie for its first team regional championship in program history tonight at Southridge High School. But it will not be easy for the Red Devils. Jeffersonville will face perennial power Evansville Mater Dei in the regional semifinals at 7 p.m. EDT. If the Red Devils beat the Wildcats, they will face either defending regional champion Castle or Jasper in the championship immediately following the semifinals. Jeff and Mater Dei have squared off a couple of times earlier this season. On Dec. 11, the Red Devils lost to the Wildcats in a dual meet at the Mater Dei Five-way Invitational, 46-10. During the tournament, three Red Devils posted 5-0 records in Alonzo Shepherd (112), Renaldo Weekly (145) and Jimmy Pratt (215). Teammates Kevim Castro (125) and Ryan DeWitt (285) each went 4-1. A week later, the Wildcats won the Jeff Classic by 56 points over second-place Jennings County. The Red Devils placed fourth in their annual tournament. Jeff and Mater Dei faced each other in last year?s team regional semifinals. The Wildcats downed the Red Devils, 45-14. Mater Dei has the most regional championships in state history with 30, but it has not claimed a regional crown since 2008. The Wildcats have won the second-most state titles in IHSAA history with 12. Their last state title came in 2007. AREA GRAPPLERS TRY TO STAY ALIVE AT INDIVIDUAL REGIONAL When high school wrestlers enter the IHSAA individual state tournament, their top two priorities are simple: survive and advance. Saturday at Jeffersonville?s Johnson Arena, several area grapplers will try to keep their seasons going as they compete in the Jeff Individual Regional. The Red Devils have the most regional qualifiers among area teams with 13. Last weekend at the Jeff Sectional, the Devils had a school-record nine sectional champions. They were Shepherd (112), Weekly (145), Pratt (215), Castro (125), DeWitt (285), Tre Harbin (140), Brent Browner (152), Brandon Marlin (160) and Elijah Curtley (189). Shepherd, Weekly and Pratt each won regional titles last season. Shepherd won the 103 title, Weekly earned the 135 crown and Pratt won the 215 championship. Charlestown will have 10 wrestlers competing in Saturday?s regional. Senior Ethan Bowen captured the Pirates? only sectional title last weekend. He defeated Floyd Central?s Shane Sneed by a 2-1 decision in the 171 final. Charlestown had four runner-up finishers at sectional in Sasha Weddington (140), Cory Suddeth (152), Jacob Hall (160) and Logan McCutchen (215). After winning the first sectional championship in Christian Academy of Indiana wrestling history, senior Cory Neel will attempt to win the program?s first regional crown. Neel will compete at 130 pounds. Four other Warriors will join Neel at regional, who are Daniel Doty (103), Christian Roberts (119), Ethan Banet (135) and Levi Speth (152). Three New Washington wrestlers will compete at regional. Leading the Mustangs will be senior Lane Massingham (140), who finished third at sectional. Massingham reached semistate last season by placing third in the 135 class at regional. The other two New Washington grapplers competing at regional are sophomore Brady Meenach (125) and freshman Jacob Franklin (160). Brennan Gregory is Providence?s lone regional qualifier. He placed second at 130 in the sectional, losing by a 7-2 decision to Neel in the final

The top four in each class advanced. ?We're pretty happy,? Jeff coach Danny Struck said. ?My goal is always to get 14 regional qualifiers, and we got 13. I feel bad for the one who didn't. I told him there was somebody else on this team that was the only guy on a team that didn't make it. That was me, my senior year. So that made him feel better.? Jeff won the title with 277 points, followed by Floyd Central (223), Charlestown (181) and New Albany (160) in the 10-team field. The sectional title qualified the Devils for the team regional at Southridge, where they'll meet the winner from the Evansville Central sectional in the first round on Wednesday night. Jeff had five top seeds, and all won individual titles without drama. Alonzo Shepherd (41-1) won his third straight sectional championship, beating Floyd's Chris Whitely 5-1 in the final at 112 pounds. Renaldo Weekley (40-1) cruised to a 13-3 win over Floyd's Chase Herron in the final at 145. The other Jeff favorites to register wins included Ryan DeWitt (34-8) with a 3-0 win over New Albany's Jacob Mudd at 285; Kevin Castro (33-9) with a 4-1 triumph over Floyd's Zach Thomas at 125; and Elijah Curtley (24-3) with a pin of New Albany's Zach Faith in 1:02 at 189. The mild Jeff surprises were all second seeds, three of whom avenged earlier losses against their finals opponent. Jimmy Pratt pounded Charlestown's Logan McCutchen 17-5 at 215, Brandon Marlin pinned Charlestown's Jacob Hall in 3:51 at 160, Brent Browner pinned Charlestown's Cory Suddeth in 2:58 at 152, and Tre Harbin pinned Charlestown's Sasha Weddington in 1:51 at 140. ?I've had teams that weren't motivated, but these guys are,? Struck said. ?At the beginning of the year, we had four senior starters quit. And we thought this would be the year we go down. It actually turned out to be our best year ever.? The Highlanders had two winners and qualified 11 for the regional. Sophomore Terrance Kennedy, the top seed at 103, pinned Eastern Pekin's Jordan Gray in 2:30 for the title. Sophomore George Emily, the top seed at 135, edged Jeff's Michael Vasquez 2-1 in the final. The other champions included New Albany's Austin Jamison (with a 10-3 win over Jeff's Oscar DeLeon at 119), Charlestown's Ethan Bowen (with a 2-1 decision over Floyd's Shane Sneed at 171) and Christian Academy's Cory Neel (with a 7-2 win over Providence's Brennan Gregory at 130). The regional at Jeff will also include qualifiers from the sectional at Southridge. The top four in each class will advance to the semistate at Evansville on Feb. 12. 17. http://newsandtribune.com/localsports/x376910258/H-S-WRESTLING-Red-Devils-repeat-as-sectional-champions January 30, 2011 H.S. WRESTLING: Red Devils repeat as sectional champions Young lineup helps Jeff win third straight sectional title; C-town ends up third By KEVIN HARRIS Kevin.Harris@newsandtribune.com The Jeffersonville News and Tribune Sun Jan 30, 2011, 01:37 AM EST JEFFERSONVILLE ? At the beginning of the season, the chances of the Jeffersonville wrestling team completing a three-peat in its own sectional looked very slim. Four senior starters left the team, which meant the Red Devils would have to rely on inexperienced wrestlers to collect another sectional title. Saturday at Johnson Arena, those young grapplers persevered and helped Jeff win three consecutive sectional championships for the first time in program history. The Red Devils had nine individual sectional champions to enable them to score 277 points. Along with the three-peat, Jeff captured its fourth sectional title in five years. The Red Devils will face the Evansville Central Sectional winner in Wednesday?s semifinals of the Southridge Team Regional. The top four finishers in each sectional weight class advanced to the Jeff Individual Regional next Saturday. ?The first one was the funnest. This one is my next favorite,? Red Devils? head coach Danny Struck compared this year?s sectional crown to the first one he won as Jeff coach in 2007. ?We weren?t supposed to be good this year. But (Jeff?s wrestlers) were so hungry once they got their chance to wrestle. ?At the beginning of the year, we had four senior starters quit. But then I learned we had kids that wanted to be here.? Struck said three newcomers to Jeff?s starting lineup played critical roles in the sectional title, as each of them placed higher than their seed. In the 103-pound division, sophomore Josi Coureur claimed fourth after being seeded fifth. At 119, sophomore Oscar DeLeon earned second as he was seeded third. At 171, No. 6 seed Brandon Spangler wound up fourth. Struck also lauded the effort of his 215-pound wrestler Jimmy Pratt. The senior won by major decision over Charlestown?s Logan McCutchen in the 215 final, 17-5. The victory came 17 days after Pratt got pinned by McCutchen in a dual meet. Shortly after Christmas, Pratt had knee surgery and did not return to action until Jan. 8 in an invitational at Franklin. Jeff?s eight other champions were Alonzo Shepherd (112), Kevim Castro (125), Tre Harbin (140), Renaldo Weekly (145), Brent Browner (152), Brandon Marlin (160), Elijah Curtley (189) and Ryan DeWitt (285). Junior Michael Vasquez (135) finished second as Jeff had 13 regional qualifiers. Struck credited the Red Devils? formidable schedule for preparing them for the sectional. ?We wrestled the best competition this season and it paid off. We wrestled state champions from three different states,? Struck said. ?Every kid got their seed or higher for us today.? Floyd Central came up 54 points short of winning its first sectional title since 2008, as it finished second. The Highlanders had two sectional champions and 11 regional qualifiers. No. 1 seed Terrence Kennedy of Floyd captured his first career sectional title by pinning Pekin Eastern?s Jordan Gray in the 103 final at the 2:30 mark. The Highlanders? other top seed, George Emily, also took care of business by capturing the 135 title. The sophomore defeated Vasquez by a 2-1 decision, avenging a loss earlier in the season at the Hoosier Hills Conference Duals where Emily lost by a technical fall. Finishing second for Floyd were Chris Whitley (112), Zach Thomas (125), Chase Herron (145) and Shane Sneed (171). Teammates Nick Stewart (119), Gus Schoenbaechler (140), Lance Youtsey (189), Nick Ottersbach (215) and Andrew Sharp (285) each qualified for regional. ?It?s never nice to finish second. But overall I thought we wrestled real well,? Highlanders? head coach Brandon Sisson said. ?All of our kids beat their seeds. They beat some kids that they had lost to in the past.? With several Highlanders expected to return next season, Sisson says his program has a shot to reclaim the sectional title in 2012. ?I really hope so,? Sisson said. ?I hope to give Jeff a better run than we did today.? Charlestown finished in third place with 181 points. Senior Ethan Bowen collected the Pirates? lone sectional title, as he defeated Sneed in the 171 title bout by a 2-1 decision. Along with McCutchen, three other Pirates got second in Sasha Weddington (140), Cory Suddeth (152) and Jacob Hall (160). Five other Charlestown wrestlers earned their tickets for regional in Justin Wolf (125), Cameron Stuart (130), Dakota Bungcayao (135), Ryan Miles (145) and Seth McCutchen (189). New Albany was fourth with 160 points. The Bulldogs? only sectional champion was sophomore Austin Jamison, who upended DeLeon in the 119 final by a 10-3 decision. Two New Albany grapplers were second in Zach Faith (189) and Jacob Mudd (285). Other Bulldogs heading to regional are Bryce Peavler (112), Hunter Langley (130), Jacob Jiles (145), C.J. Reynolds (152), Matt O?Connell (160), Noah Schindler (171) and Cheyenne Conn (215). Christian Academy of Indiana recorded its highest finish ever in the sectional, as it was fifth with 103 points. Senior Cory Neel became the first Warrior to ever win a sectional title. He won the 130 final against Providence junior Brennan Gregory by a 7-2 decision. CAI freshman Daniel Doty was third at 103. Three Warriors finished fourth in Christian Roberts (119), Ethan Banet (135) and Levi Speth (152). New Washington wound up seventh with 78 1/2 points. Three Mustangs qualified for regional, as Brady Meenach (125) and Lane Massingham (140) both placed third and Jacob Franklin (160) finished fourth. Providence finished in a tie for eighth with Corydon with 48 points. Gregory was the only Pioneer to qualify for regional. 18. FROM JUSTIN SOKELAND OF THE COURIER JOURNAL http://www.courier-journal.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2011301270100 Jeffersonville will feature five top seeds as it chases its third straight Indiana High School Athletic Association wrestling sectional championship Saturday afternoon at Jeff's Johnson Arena. The top four in each weight class in the first stage of the state tournament will advance to the Jeffersonville Regional on Feb. 5. The sectional team champion will advance to the team regional at Southridge on Wednesday. ?Jeffersonville has never won three sectionals in a row, and that is our team goal for the day,? Jeff coach Danny Struck said. ?Besides that we have always had the goal of qualifying the whole team to the regional. It has never been done in our sectional history, and we believe we have a good shot this year.? Seniors are leading the charge for the Red Devils. Renaldo Weekley (38-1 and a state qualifier last year) is ranked No. 4 in the state at 145 pounds. Ryan DeWitt (31-8 and a semistate qualifier last year) is the top seed at 285, and Kevim Castro (30-9) is the top seed at 125. Jeff junior Alonzo Shepherd (38-1 and a state qualifier last year), is ranked No. 7 at 112 and will be looking for his third straight sectional crown. Elijah Curtley (22-3 and a semistate qualifier from last year) is the top seed at 189. ?My kids believe in themselves,? Struck said. ?I hope they come ready in the moments that count here later in the season.? Charlestown has four top seeds with Cory Suddeth (25-8 at 152), Jacob Hall (29-6 at 160), Ethan Bowen (29-5 at 171) and Logan McCutcheon (28-8 at 215). Floyd Central has two with sophomores Terrence Kennedy (25-5 at 103) and George Emily (19-11 at 135). Other top seeds are New Albany sophomore Austin Jamison (17-5 at 119), Christian Academy's Cory Neel (23-8 at 130) and New Washington's Lane Massingham (140).

  21. WRESTLING WEDNESDSAY: Jeffersonville to try to make history Saturday with third straight sectional title By KEVIN HARRIS Kevin.Harris@newsandtribune.com The Jeffersonville News and Tribune Wed Jan 26, 2011, 12:22 AM EST > SOUTHERN INDIANA ? The Jeffersonville wrestling team hopes Saturday will be a historic day for its program when it hosts the Jeff Sectional at Johnson Arena. The Red Devils will try to win their third consecutive sectional title, which would be a first in team history. They also will attempt to have a regional qualifier in each of the 14 weight classes, which has never been done in the sectional?s existence. The top four grapplers in each weight class will advance to next Saturday?s Jeff Regional. Another goal for Jeff will be to have 11 wrestlers in this year?s sectional finals. The Red Devils got 10 in the finals last season. ?Our expectations are to strive to have the goal of all the kids wrestling their best of the season so far,? Jeff head coach Danny Struck said. ?Jeffersonville has never won three sectionals in a row and that is our team goal for the day. Besides that, we have always had the goal of qualifying 14 to the regionals. It has never been done in our sectional history, and we believe we have a good shot of it this year.? The Red Devils have 10 wrestlers seeded in the top two of their respective weight divisions. Jeff?s top seeds are Alonzo Shepherd (112 pounds), Kevim Castro (125), Renaldo Weekley (145), Elijah Curtley (189) and Ryan DeWitt (285). Five Devils are seeded second, who are Michael Vazquez (135), Tre Harbin (140), Brent Browner (152), Brandon Marlin (160) and Jimmy Pratt (215). Struck thinks the sleeper to win a sectional title for Jeff is 130-pounder Jordan Schremp, who is seeded sixth. ?We believe that on a slightly above-average day that eight of our 10 top-two seeds should bring home titles, and on a great day we could have 10 champs,? Struck said. ?Some of them have to overcome previous losses. But my kids believe in themselves and I hope they come ready in the moments that count here, later in the season and in their lives.? Based on the seedings, Floyd Central is expected to finish second. The Highlanders have two No. 1 seeds in Terrence Kennedy (103) and George Emily (135). Three Floyd grapplers are seeded No. 2 in Jacob Cassady (119), Chase Herron (145) and Shane Sneed (171). Receiving No. 3 seeds for the Highlanders are Chris Whitley (112), Gus Schoenbaechler (140) and Andrew Sharp (285). ?My overall expectations are that every wrestler get or beat their seeds and try to qualify all 14 wrestlers to regionals, and we have never done that before,? Floyd Central head coach Brandon Sisson said. ?I believe it has been proven in the past that we do a great job as a program at peaking this time of year, and I look forward to seeing this team do the same. ?Terrence Kennedy, Jacob Cassady, George Emily, Chase Herron and Shane Sneed are the favorites to make it to the finals. But I think we have a chance at getting possibly three more in if we wrestle like we are capable.? The seedings place Charlestown, which has four No. 1 seeds, third in the team standings. The top-seeded Pirates are Cory Suddeth (152), Jacob Hall (160), Ethan Bowen (171) and Logan McCutchen (215). Despite no No. 2 seeds, Charlestown has four No. 3 seeds in Justin Wolf (125), Cameron Stuart (130), Ryan Miles (145) and Seth McCutchen (189). ?Our goals going into sectionals are to place in the top three as a team and send everyone to regionals,? Pirates? head coach Adam Doherty said ?Our best shot at sectional championships will be our four No. 1 seeds. But I think we have several wrestlers who are lower seeds that will be a factor.? Charlestown should have momentum on its side after winning the Southern Indiana Wrestling Conference and Mid-Southern Conference championships the last two weekends. ?I think we are carrying a little momentum into this weekend?s sectionals,? Doherty said. ?After winning the SIWC and MSC tournaments the last two weekends, our kids seem more focused. Hopefully, we can peak at the right time.? New Albany has only one No. 1 seed in sophomore Austin Jamison (119). A pair of Bulldogs received two seeds in seniors Zach Faith (189) and Jacob Mudd (285). Christian Academy of Indiana senior Cory Neel (130) is the lone No. 1 seed for the Warriors. Three CAI wrestlers are seeded third in seniors Levi Speth (152) and Ethan Banet (135) and freshman Daniel Doty (103). Senior Lane Massingham will lead New Washington as the team?s only top seed. Massingham (140) qualified for semistate last season. Teammate Brady Meenach (125) is seeded second, while Mustang freshman Jacob Franklin (160) received a three seed. Earning No. 4 seeds for New Washington were Brandon Gonzalez (103) and Yancey Crase (130). ?The expectations of our kids at the sectional is easy ? qualify for the next level of competition first and then focus on bringing home championships,? Mustangs? head coach Jeremy Campbell said. ?Overall, our kids have put themselves in a good position to advance. It is now up to them to prove their seed in competition. Our No. 1 team goal is to be gritty, be competitive and demonstrate toughness.? Providence?s highest-seeded wrestler is junior Brennan Gregory (130), who is seeded second. A pair of Pioneers are seeded fourth in Jared Griffith (135) and Jordan Kaelin (145).
